New hires? Mondaycast? WHAT IN THE HELL IS HAPPENING OVER AT GIANT BOMB DOT COM?!?!

Posted by golguin

It isn't Tuesday and I'm in the West best coast California. What is happening? Everything is off now.

Posted by Capshot

Early Bombcast? Whoa.

Edited by 80PoundGames

@bleatingheart: Just last week, I left a comment on a youtube video about the lack of diversity in games media: "

"The gaming media as a whole is an echo chamber. All the major outlets are within 10 miles of each other in San Fransisco...The IGN guys are friends with the Giant Bomb guys, who are friends with the Kotaku guys, who are friends with the Gamespot guys and so on and so on...

All of these people are friends who hang out after work, do podcast together and hire each other when they need a job. It's not surprising that they share a lot of the same core values and belief systems."

I kind of gave a sad chuckle to myself when I heard who they had hired.

I'm like most people here, I really do like Dan and Jason, but there is still a part of me that's saying "damn it". It's a complicated issue and I'm sure all my feelings on the matter aren't exactly right or 100% correct. It's just the way I feel about it at the moment.

Neat.

But you threw my schedule off. I wasn't intending to listen to a Bombcast this early in the week. I'm scared and confused.

Edited by JoeyRavn

Wait, what? This is a travesty. I refuse to listen to this.

I listen to the Bombcast on Wednesdays. Europe time and all that. Today is barely Tuesday.

Is this the first time ever they've released it on Monday?

@w1n5t0n: I do not assume that a woman or anyone else who is not a white dude is automatically better. Obviously not. I do assume that there are several extremely qualified people out there who are not white dudes. I don’t think that’s a bad assumption to make.

I also did not say anything about life experiences being all the same. That’s complete fabrication on your part.

Expand that rolodex. That is my message. Know that you should be better. Actually give more and different people a voice. You currently don’t do that enough. That’s all.

The hires are what they are and, as I said, very qualified and I’m certain they will do an excellent job. However, looking forward I’m saying that Giant Bomb can do better.

Great cast! Can't wait for the new 'bomb to get rolling!

This is exactly how I feel, and I'm sure we're not alone. I think a lot of people who are dismissive of the push for more diversity on Giant Bomb fail to realize that most of us aren't 100% against the hiring decision, or necessarily getting up on a high horse. It's not a black and white issue that's easy to take a stand for or against.

Looking forward to listening to the podcast.

I had more typed out but I figured it was not worth it so I erased it. I don't want to be labeled as something because of how I view a particular situation. I have much faith that Jeff and co. have brought people to us who will create awesome content!

Posted by Sackmanjones

These guys seem pretty awesome but I can't help but feel a bit disappointed that nobody new is getting into the fold. I mean eventually somebody has to hire a new face right? If not this so called industry will slowly go away just because of how intertwined it is.

Anyway don't mean to be a downer, these dudes seem really cool and look forward to the future!

To that emailer about videogame violence. Since there's no more Jack Thompson and Leeland Yee, videogame violences are now totally okay.

This is one of the few times the social justice movement in gaming has put me on the opposite side of the aisle.

I really dislike the implication that all white men have the same perspective on everything, or that Dan and Jason will not bring a unique perspective to GB. It speaks of ignoring the details for the conceptual issue. I dislike the idea that GB is some heterogeneous perspective currently, that needs "fixing" with the addition of different "perspectives," which is really read as "person with different gender/ethnicity."

This is one of the few sites on the internet that has been home-grown based on the personalities of the people that run it. They started with almost nothing except that, and it has been their lasting appeal. The idea that they should listen to somebody else in their hiring decisions is appalling to me, much less the idea that they should be fulfilling some diversity "quota" that they haven't met yet. Do the people in this very comment section that are weighing the "level of diversity" on GB even participate in the site? I can't imagine you doing that and still thinking about it in these terms, as if you're some sort of CBS executive that doesn't give a shit about the end result.

Diversity is great, and I've been very happy that the voices that are available to read/watch on the internet have been expanding in scope. But demanding that GB not hire Dan fucking Ryckert - are you serious?!

Edit: I guess she was talking about a different Worth Reading. Fair enough.

How dare Giant Bomb hire an experienced writer whom the current staff have known and have been friends with for years to fill a spot in a personality/video/goofy shit driven website.....grrrrrrr how dare they

Well considering neither you nor Samantha actually gave any hint as to which Worth Reading she was talking about when she's been featured in multiple, I guess I'm going to remain in the dark about it, huh?

But fine, consider my prior post mostly redacted.

@80poundgames: right there with ya, buddy.

Does anyone know which services Jeff was referring to when he was talking about getting Japanese PSN cards? And does the Japanese account have to be the PRIMARY on the console? Actually fairly interested in some weird digital importing.

Posted by Psykodoughboy

Game Journalist are the ones screaming about diversity in game development and games characters.I don't recall in any instance were they have talked about the diversity in game journalism. Game Journalism has less diversity than game developers, but i don't recall that brought up as an issue.

I'm finding my reaction to the new hires to be the same as all the press conferences at E3.

"That's cool, wish it was more spectacular."

I am not familiar with Jason, but I am highly pro-Dan Ryckert.

Just... with the diversity backlash, I hope Giant Bomb handles it well. I think this is an example of something in humanity that has really no right or wrong answer. This is one situation where logic splinters in a thousand ways and a bunch of different arguments could be make, all of them seeming logical. I can really understand the frustrations of those desiring diversity, but I can see the other side as well.

I have faith in the GB crew to address the fallout of this well. Jeff may not bring it up on the site proper, but I can't see him avoiding the question during the next jar attack. I would not be surprised if Patrick addressed it on Scoops and the Wolf or Worth Reading either. At the very least, I see him putting a few tweets about it in the next worth reading and linking to the scathing editorial piece that will be written by Samantha Allen (or at least some sort of critique of Giant Bomb... though I am certain she will write one about this whole thing).

To me, diversity in the industry is a lot like weight loss. Every obese person dreams of being able to loose that weight in days or that one of the miracle pills will work. Still, obesity didn't happen over night and neither did this problem, only instead of a hundred pounds, you're dealing with hundreds of years of discrimination in society to deal with. It takes constant effort and dealing with setbacks properly in order to combat the problem. I thought that all the negative tweets criticizing the number of women on the E3 live shows were out of line, at first. I mean, Patrick tried really hard to diversify and the amount of women on Giant Bomb over the last year has jumped up by literally %1500. Still, Patrick handled it graciously and accepted the remarks, making sure that each person who made them felt heard. That to me, is a class act.

I am just hoping that this whole ordeal does not become their Dickwolves. I hope they don't do something stupid and piss everyone off. I say let people get the anger off their chests for a month about it and hopefully, everyone will adjust to the new status quo. It an impossible situation as a few of said.

I dunno about Jeff. But I use cardscodes.com to get the other regions (including JP) PSN Network cards thru Paypal. They will email the code to you within hours of purchase.

If I recalled correctly, you need to create a fake JP PSN account, Kotaku wrote a guide for this. I don't use Japanese PSN account as the primary account, I used Singapore account for that (and I'm in Europe). Everything works, the trophies will be populated to the account that you used to play the game. I used it mainly for PSOne classics, and maybe JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

Is it too early to start nitpicking Dan's performance on the Bombcast?

Edited by CabbageSensei

I'm excited about the new guys too, but I will stand by the others voicing criticism of the demographics in Giant Bomb. This would have been great opportunity and a great example of expanding the video game journalism "rolodex." Change cannot only come from words, but from actions too.

I also challenge the idea that GB wanted to hire people that would fit the group dynamic. Jeff has continually said (in Jar times, his Tumblr, and other content) that he wants to keep GB spontaneous. I think hiring new people (ie not established game journalists who are also their friends) from different backgrounds (ie women and minorities who hardly ever get opportunities from the BIG websites) would have created a more spontaneous environment.

EDIT: I'm adding @bleatingheart's link to Jenn Frank's article about The Rolodex because everyone should read it before they call out forced diversity.

Actually, you're wrong about that.

Dirty Dan Ryckert, its time to play the game!

Edited by CabbageSensei

I also think that this so called forced diversity that some people are calling out as a bad thing is necessary. CBSi is a private company, so I'm not saying that the government should force them to change their hiring practices. But historically speaking, and not only focusing on games journalism, sometimes forcing someone (or a company) to do social good is the only way change happens. See the 14th and 15th Amendment and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

EDIT: My last sentence sounded a bit harsh. I don't mean to imply that someone should force GB to do something. I just hoped that a diversity friendly hiring had happened.

Guess we will be renewing our Giantbomb subscriptions at Gamestop.

Edited by VincentVendetta

Yeah, I'm pretty disapointed too. I'm sure they're gonna be fine, but we all the great conversations the crew has had with a more diverse line-up, I was hoping that the would take the next step and just flat-out hire a woman or a person with a different social background. I'm kinda bummed about it. Hope they adress the disapointment as soon as possible.

Edited by Mister_V

So excited for this. can't wait to see what they get up to.

A fun filled explosion indeed

Edited by djm389

I'm trying to stay as neutral as possible during this whole thing but I have to make a point. I don't agree with everyone calling Giant Bomb a "major gaming website." It is more of an entertainment website that concerns video games most of the time. What are side attractions to Gamespot, IGN, and all the other truly major gaming websites are Giant Bomb's bread and butter... in depth looks at games, commentary, a loose relationship with developers, playing around with old games, making fun of "2 Broke Girls," and a slew of other crazy crap like racing or wrestling. These other websites have high turn over rates and probably go through multiple employees through the course of the year. Since 2008, Giant Bomb has made significant editorial changes three times (four if you include the beyond heartbreaking death of Ryan Davis)... the hiring of Vinny and Brad, then the hiring of Patrick, and now this. Yes, Rorie and Drew were also hired, but they aren't on the editorial staff.

It will never stop sounding like an excuse, sadly, but Giant Bomb is not a standard website. It rarely hires new people. Heck, one of the core employees of the company tragically died and they were not able to hire new people until an entire year after he died and two other employees moved to the other side of the country. So, I don't blame them for being safe.

Not everyone is going to be happy. I mean, look at this tweet that Samantha Allen, a person particularly enraged by this whole thing, made a few weeks ago. It basically says, "no matter what happens, I am going to be super pissed and enraged." She already made up her mind loooong before this actually happened. People are basing their reactions more on emotion than thought.

EDIT: I don't know how to embed tweets but here is what she said: "I am dreading the day the new Giant Bomb editor is announced. If it's a woman, she'll receive instant abuse. If it's a man, well... yeah."

@ripelivejam: Hiring aliens from another freaking planet is as diverse as you can get, bub. Personally I would like to see GB hire more dragons. Chinese dragons.

Haha, yes of course it is. I'd say Dan and Jason get at least a few grace months. It can take a while to carve out your place in a group. And it has to be hard/stressful just being dropped into the middle of the most popular (I think?) gaming podcast.

I guess that's why YouTube video folks are probably the future. Really wouldn't be too surprised if most dedicated gaming sites go the way of print mags.
