Period. Dota 2

Edited by GardenStateApologist

@ntm: @ntm: No, not as of yet. Even a couple weeks after E3, only Vinny and (obviously) Patrick had finished it. Then all the Ryan stuff happened and.....well......yeah.

Vinny went as far as to say anyone who thinks video games can't tell a good story should be pointed specifically to TLOU, and both Brad and Jeff were blown away by the prologue, but that's about the extent of discussion. I likewise can't wait for them to delve into the minutiae. I struggle to think of a game with more beautifully understated nuances spread throughout than this one, and can't think of a group of guys better suited to recognizing and admiring those touches than the Bombcast. That said, this is a game that evokes melancholy and loss with little more than broken glass and clothes strewn about a bedroom floor, so I'm willing to wait a while for them to get back to it.

Beat-em-ups: The genre that has taken the mantle from adventure games as "the style of game that is completely, totally played out and dead, we mean it you guys, no, really--" even as they continue to come out every year and integrate new ideas and make money.

I mean, we've got two well-talked-about beat-em-ups coming out within a month of each other. I think we might need a new genre to take on the burden of being unduly shat upon for a while.

On second thought, somebody should just take the hypothetical Giant Bomb fight sprites and make a badass beat-em-up game with them.

ALL CRITICS WILL BE SILENCED! Probably.

Have the Giant Bomb crew ever talked in-depth, or at all about The Last of Us on one of the podcasts? If so, can someone tell me which one? Thanks. I'd like to know what they thought about it. Every time I beat a game, especially a fantastic one, I like to find some discussions about it through podcasts and what have you.

There's a disappointing dearth of podcasts that go beyond the surface level "it's so dark MANNN", but hey, just another reason to continue ignoring the existence of IGN and Gamespot. Anyway, here's a couple articles and videos I found edifying, interesting, etc. The Edge postmortem is particularly fucking awesome.

Also Alex is here yay

Beat-em-ups have become third-person character action games. It sucks, but hey, if this is what it takes for me to get a Bare Knuckle 4, I'll deal with it in my own way.

Alex!

I really hope some of the current gen games of this year find their way onto next gen systems in some form. Not entirely because my 360 RROD'd on me a month ago :o

NCNASCARNASCAR would be great, beyond the extensive advertising, pit chiefs being paid millions, and the Championship Series....

The "warm-up" time in dota is when supports place their wards and stuff. So going into the enemy jungle to block neutral camps or secure vision with no penalty would be retarded. It's a good thing everything counts.

They haven't. With E3 business and then Ryan, it's not exactly the shortest, or happiest game, to play through/ talk about. I do hope one day they will do a spoilercast. I would love to hear their opinions on the ending.

The rest of the crew is probably going to put Last of Us on the shelf until GOTY time, maybe not even then.

Are people really that excited for Elder Scrolls Online? Of the major upcoming MMOs that come to mind I feel like that one is getting the least hype.

I would be very tempted to buy into subscriber status if there was a drunken saltybet livestream here.

I just want Alex to know that I heard his Clerks: The Animated Series reference at 1 hour and 26 minutes and I appreciate it.

Also, it kind of freaks me out that I've listened to the Bombcast for so long that I absolutely remember Brad telling this bee lawn mower story before.

Nintendo or Sony should buy Atlus. Nintendo will definetely make sense, since most of their jrpg's go to the 3ds. Sony has too much going on plus Nintendo needs a little bit help on the Wii U.

@phished0ne: It's totally true actually, I don't hate Rorie, but I'm a newer GB fan(last couple years) and so far he seems to shoot down any fun ideas and kind of be an obnoxious dick during the live events. Maybe I should give him more slack, but so far, he's a new guy and he seems to be way too cynical for the rest of the crowd.

Edited by Ares42

Can't say I agree with Brads assertion that the goal of good MM should be that you're around 50% win/loss. If you'd ask me good MM means most of your games are close games. While DOTA MM is doing a great job at keeping me around 50% winrate, it's a horrible ride of being completely outmatched and playing matches without any real competition.

Posted by MasturbatingestBear

Navarro is in this one? Love the dude's writing style but cannot stand hearing his voice and how overenthusiastic he can get about his opinion, it's seriously cringe-worthy.

Not at all true in the least.

It's so weird how Alex moved from one of the, if not the, most loved guy at Gamespot and now since he isn't a regular people don't know him and don't get his humor. It's sad. Oh well at least it's a small minority of whiny people.

Have Alexis Alexander Navarro on every podcast.

I should of listened, I lost all my money on a DBZ character.

Man...I am really getting tired of the DOTA2 domination on this website. To each their own, but its everywhere. Tweets, videos, and a lengthy talk at every podcast. I'd rather hear about the WiiU than Dota2 at this point...and that say a fucking lot.

Regarding Doom, and how to make a new one: Id needs to play the Brutal Doom mod for the original game, and then play Bulletstorm, and then think about how to put those two things together and make it even more intense and crazy. Because that's what Doom is all about-- and in some ways, modern games haven't ever surpassed it.

I mean, we haven't had a shooter since the dawn of polygonal graphics where the corpses don't disappear-- and that's a core concept of the original Doom! So how about Carmack figures out a solution to that problem with some kind of dark techno-magick? (You know he could.) In fact, go beyond that-- blood, bullet-holes, and everything else should stick around permanently.

Being able to walk back through an area and see the insane mess left from your previous battles, down to every bullet shell and demon gut-- that's how you make a new Doom game that evokes the feelings of the original. That and a bad-ass shotgun. And the ability to dodge a fireball.

So, basically those three things.

Alex, you didn't even go to Christian Brothers Academy east coast for just one year, thank F**king Gawd for Bay Area, CA.

Don't want to know what is on Jeff's mind for 3 hours, plenty of lectures over the years ..I like Jeff.

Tank(HW) should be just fine as long as connections are tight (no Teflon!). Regulator coupler usually burns out. Somebody crankin up the dial their fault when they get in the shower. I replaced my garbage disposal today, forgot to punch out the dishwasher waste inlet damnit.

With BR lock will come with wire key for outside. Put it somewhere for emergencies

Some venetian blinds are designed for dark as poss.

It's been forever since they had to do rabies shots into your stomach. When I was kid I had to get shots and they did them in my thigh. This was a little over 20 years ago. I think today they can do the shots in your arm like most other vaccines.

DOTA conversation starts at 0:39:19 and ends at 0:51:09. That's 11m50s out of 3h27m25. That's 5-6% of the show's duration.

Personaly I don't care about Animal Crossing.I tried that game and I find it boooooring. To each their own.

Regarding Halo:

Even the most PC-ass PC elitist should be able to appreciate the innovations Halo brought to first person shooters, most of which had nothing to do with "dumbing it down" so that it could work on a console. Things like:

1. Behavior-responsive enemy and friendly AI

2. Huge, open-ended environments with multiple approaches

3. Off-hand grenades and on-demand melee

4. A cohesive physics system applying to all objects and characters

5. Dynamic transitions between on-foot and vehicle combat

6. Recharging shields-- seriously, RECHARGING SHIELDS

These aren't just "console shooter" innovations, these are groundbreaking innovations for games in general. Hearing Jeff and Brad straight bitching about how they didn't care about it because "it wasn't Quake 3" and the PR were being jerks was fucking crazy-making.

I was waiting for Drew, silent during their entire tirade, to suddenly slap his mic across the room and upend the podcast table, Miyamoto style.

...But he didn't.

Drew says a lot of funny stuff that no one else seems to notice.

It will pass soon. I hope. It's already dwindled down a bit, and seeing as Brad has a tendency to go batshit for games for a while, then teeter off. It is looking like the DOTA stuff will come to an end. Please.

I know it's only X minutes out of the whole show, but ugh.

@angrighandi: To be fair I never played Halo (or any FPS on consoles around that time), but two of the things you list as innovations are straight up negatives in my book. I think the dissonance isn't as much about the fact that it didn't innovate but rather that compared to what PC FPS's were doing Halo didn't improve that experience, it went for a different (and some might say less compelling) gameplay style.

Even to this day PC FPS and console FPS are quite different experiences, and if you're used to one the other seems strange and off-putting. I've tried to jump onto the console FPS bandwagon myself (trying out pretty much all the big consoles shooters), but having spent thousands of hours playing CS, Quake and other PC shooters I just can't get into it.
