With Project Diva f coming out on the Vita I think it'll push interest in the device up a notch (at least in japan and among importers)

@Nottle: Are you trying to say that sexualized children-like characters aren't gross?

Posted by DexterKid

I can definitely understand why someone would be put off by the art style in Dust. I haven't played the game but from the little I've seen of it so far, there is something about the character design that just sticks out in a weird way. And it's perfectly understandable why people who spend a lot of time on internet forums will make the connection to furry porn or whatever, it definitely is evocative of that sort of thing.

I find it even weirder that the GB crew are acting like they don't see it whatsoever and anyone who does is just a fucking idiot!

I have to say, that they only thing I find somewhat annoying is that Patrick doesn't seem to know alot about computers, but other than that, he is totally fine and an awesome addition to the bombcrew. The rest of the guys, however proved their computer cred on this bombcast, and all of that talk (from Usenet to Emacs to mIRC to Windows 8 to mentions of Xserver and Ubuntu) was really entertaining to listen to. I did previously think that they were all using Macs for superfluous reasons, (It's a computer that's "easy" to use! And I'm a writer, why do I need to know any of this crap, etc...) but this bombcast specifically has shattered my preconceived notions. I freely admit I was in the wrong on that one. They probably have several legitimate reasons why they use macs in the office. (Not having to pay for them is probably a pretty big one)

Why do you have to say?

@simkas: Jeff doesn't like transformers because Megatron doesn't transform into a gun. Some people don't like anything to do with furries and the game reminds them of furries. That reasoning is not really that stupid or out there. If the aesthetic style of a game really bothers you then you won't be able to enjoy it. People love Fallout 3/New Vegas and apart from some fundamental issues I have with the writing and quests in those games, I just can't stand that Gamebryo look which makes it very hard for me to play and enjoy them.

Posted by YoThatLimp

I can confirm that wood/rail road porn was alive and kicking in the mid to late 90's.

Patrick's back? I like his writing but he can be a bit overbearing on the bombcast...

@Nottle: Are you trying to say that sexualized children-like characters aren't gross?

Not at all. What I'm trying to say is that they are not any more gross than sexualized AnimalxPeople hybrids. Neither are really my scene, but both are harmless the way I see it. Animated children and animated animals are not real. As long as it stays computer generated and if they don't pop up as sprays in a TF2 server, it doesn't bother me.

I'm just playing devil's advocate, I really have an agenda other than pointing out something that may be hypocritical.

If we are supposed to learn something about discrimination, but you still discriminate against things the lesson is ineffective. Who gets to decide furry's are creepy but ok, but lolis are creepy and your horrible if you like them? It's what Brad brought up, its something people can hate as a group, for some reason. I just wonder why is it someone else's business?

@Humanity: Indeed. They are only people, they value there own opinions, I can't blame anyone for that. But if people really don't like something about a game it's there choice. That being said, I think people should chill and should give something a chance before writing it off because of the way it looks. Also while Brad seems to value his opinion, he's good about giving games a chance. He played FFXIII and was at least able to say something nice about the combat.

Come on! They are robots that turn into boulders! How is that not awesome?!

Kinda sad how everyone of them is playing Darksiders 2 and ignoring Sleeping Dogs (only Vinny has played it and only Jeff wants to play it). Sleeping Dogs is fucking awesome!

I think part of the thing that puts people off of Dust is the characters do NOT look technically that great. They look like fanart. Look at games like Ōkami, they have animal characters talking, but the art style is consistently excellent. When I look at the character art in Dust, I just see shitty shading that every furry/anime fan art piece that doesn't have any sense of quality uses. If the characters were more consistent with the environments, which look great, and less like fan art, it'd come off a lot less as "a game for furries" and more as "a game with anthropomorphic characters."

I've seen a lot of really fuckin awesome furry art thanks to having a furry in my crowd of peers who posts cool stuff. Hell, I even almost commissioned a not-really-furry piece to go along with a new Gamertag (HavokTurtle), just because the guy was a genuinely fantastic artists.

Sure, there is a vocal minority who's going to just say "EW FURRIES" but that doesn't mean everyone who doesn't dig the aesthetic is that kind of asshole. Just like it's possible to find the idea of one's self being gay unappealing without giving a damn what anyone else is, or any other infinite variations that boils down to personal preference.

@FierceDeity: The ginger thing may have been popularized by South Park, but was around before it. It's also fucking annoying, as someone with a redheaded lady friend.

Precisely, the problem with Dust's character design is that poor execution drops the art slap-bang into the uncanny valley, which makes it unsettling. And the backgrounds are just bad.

As for the ginger thing, in the UK that's been going on for a long time, but it's not a real 'hate', it's just a jokey thing.

Posted by simkas

@Nottle: Yes they are far more gross. Anthropomorphic animals are just animals that act like humans, there's nothing harmless about that, while lolis are something specifically catered to people who get turned on by underaged girls, that's pretty fucking messed up.

Edited by Death_Burnout

I am in the exact same situation with the guy who emailed about driving on the right side of the road in video games and how it fucks me up in Sleeping Dogs even though I drive on the left here. Even getting in the wrong side of the car and going "huh?" every time it takes longer than it should.

Posted by nickux

mmmmmm this is so good.

But I am bummed to hear them talk about the Vita and it's supposed lack of games but not discuss all of the Vita games announced at Gamescom. I feel like there's finally some good times ahead for Vita owners.

Edited by AngelN7

Someone needs to email those guys a pic of any sonic fanart on devianart and they'll know why people hate it , I'm sorry but that's exaclty how Dust looks , also is pretty funny when you guys say "it's cool to hate on" nah is just that people don't like it.

As much as I love the Bombcast and the crew, what I take issue with is sometimes this overwhelming feeling that if you don't agree with the guys then your opinion is obviously wrong.

Yeah I find that frustrating at times too. Everyone who agrees with them is a smart, level-headed, productive member of society who thinks long and deep before offering up their balanced and open-minded opinion. Anyone who disagrees is generic, reactionary, internet scum.

The funny thing is, the binary single-mindedness and aggression with which they often make these sorts of statements usually sounds (to me) just like the angry, knee-jerking that they are condemning.
Posted by Madara117

I myself cannot play Dust because of personally experiences with furries in general, I disagree with the bombcast crew when they say that it's an irrational and silly reason, when you've seen message boards you frequent literally get shut down by furry spammers who cover it with their sick fetish, not caring who does or does not want to see it, and when you've been personally "trolled" as it were, for about four years straight by a group of furries who refuse to leave you alone on about every forum you visit, it's kind of hard not to be jaded to the point of getting angry at anything even remotely furry, I'm all for cutesy animals that talk in video games, but these characters are anthropamorphic and look like 90% of the furry "art" that is drawn. Star Fox was disturbing to me as a child, I've never liked anthropamorphic entities in general.

My hate is not irrational nor silly, and it was a generalization of the people who won't play this game because of the "art" style based on a vocal minority.

Hey, if you like the game that's great. I'm not judging anyone for digging it or the art style, I just really find it visually displeasing and don't want to play it. But furries are awesome, I got no problem with them at all.

And now I know that Anthrocon is something that exists genuinely in our world and time. Oh the humanity/hilarity!

His is the only negative review, and it was assy of him to straight up tell Vinny not to buy it. Fuck off, how about letting him form his own opinion.

Clearly art styles for games are everything in a video game despite Dust being incredible. Go miss out on one of the best games this year because of your own stubbornness.

yes because he can only have one reason for not wanting to play a game.

What other reason did he give in this post? Please point it out for me as the only thing that he's complaining about is the art style. I don't care if you play the game or not, but giving silly reasons such as this baffle me.

I just want to say that while I think the overall look of Sleeping Dogs is good, and they did a good job with lighting and a lot of the building and car design, the close up textures are awful. That's how you can tell it's old tech and where you see how they had to compromise. Just look at one of the clothing merch tables. Completely flat, pixelated texture. So, I'm liking Sleeping Dogs, but I just want to point out that it's driving me a little crazy that so many people are talking about how "gorgeous" it is without mentioning the horrible textures in certain places, when viewed close up. They don't ruin the game, by any means, but they are definitely there, and I keep wondering if people are just missing them or just not mentioning them. :)

That's the only one I gave. If a movie looks like shit (to me) I'm not going to enjoy watching it. Ditto for a game. This game is not "for me" and I'm totally okay with that. I hope other people have fun playing it.

Going out on a limb to say that the depth a game reviewer goes into most games and the people that breeze through the various Nightmare/Insanity difficulties of specific games are probably miles apart. Speaks to inefficiencies in game that the person you think should have the MOST exposure to video games probably can't actually fly as high as people that devote themselves to at most a half dozen a year. But I'm just going to guess no one on the Bombcast could solo an Insanity run in ME2 only using an Adept's powers just as an example, because they've already moved on to 3 other games in that time.

Well, yeah this is all true, especially the bored part. I know what they said, but the way you said it sounded more absolute.

Being turned off by Darksiders is based on aesthetics, being turned off by Dust is based on the hatred of a group of people.

I guess I misinterpreted what you said. Being turned off by Dust doesn't have to be some sort of internet "we hate people that are different" thing. Thats all I'm saying. But you know that too.

I just thought it was pretty funny that the entire Dust conversation was about how it sucks that people are crying about furry art, Then the next conversation was about how initially it's easy to wright off Darksiders because of the art. I know they all like both games, but it's just funny.
