Episode Notes

Heads up, I say this in the intro but I wanted to repeat it here: The audio starts great and then... it gets much less great. (That said, thanks to Twitter users @KeithJCarberry, @ali_west, @brutushayeosu & @InaudibleWhisper for their help with the audio!)

If you still have the old file on your pod listening device, delete that file and redownload and you should get the better version.

Additional heads up, some light spoilers in the cast, if that's a thing that you're concerned about!

Ugh, this is the worst piece of content for the audio gods to fuck with! Don't think I can make it through it.

The bitter war between audio equipment and Austin Walker continues.

@austin_walker: if you have a written version of this conversation somewhere I'm sure people would like that. But if you'd have to write the whole thing then don't bother of course. Don't want to saddle you with more work.

Back to listening to Kleptok, he who speaks in dubstep!

Posted by BillyMaysRIP

I kinda like it. I feel like I'm intercepting some conversation I'm not supposed to hear...

Posted by madmatt213

Oh wow I watched the Quick Look and thought the player character sounded familiar, but had no clue that it was Rich Sommer! He played such a spectacularly great asshole on MAD MEN!

Posted by austin_walker

People who are listening to the cast, let me know if this audio is is easier for you to listen to? The ghosty wind effect on this and the too-sharp sibilance makes it really hard for me, but that could just be my setup.

Any possibility of a transcription of this bad boy?

Posted by Orpheus94

That sounds much better to me, Austin.
On a related note, thanks for all the awesome content recently! Loving all these features!

Posted by cyberfunk

@austin_walker: That audio is much better IMO. I can barely make out what they are saying in the current podcast audio without turning my speakers to 11. Great interview though, have you thought of maybe transcribing it or at least paraphrasing in an article?

Edited by Homelessbird

Excited to listen to this!

Posted by TummyRubbins

@austin_walker: The sample is WAY better. I hear the ghostly effect your talking about but at low volume it's nearly absent. I would love to get that version. The robot voices were tough to listen to.

Posted by rmanthorp

That's a LOT better! Thanks for fixing it up Austin and help. Really appreciate it.

Thanks Austin, my hero!

Posted by brutushayesosu

Glad it was fixable. Sounds way better now

Posted by bb4lake

I know it may have seemed like a lot of work for one piece but we appreciate the time you put into this Austin!

Posted by ghobot

Of course any podcast the Idle Thumbs cabal is in features Far Cry 2.

Posted by Fascismo

How light are we talking for the spoilers in here? I want to listen to this, but I don't think I'm going to be able to actually play Firewatch for a while and going in as fresh as possible seems crucial to enjoying this game

Happy this was fixable because it's a really cool interview

Far Cry 2 ROFL

Posted by Russcat

@austin_walker: Hey Austin, don't know if this matters but you left in the spoiler that is mentioned right at the end of the cast with regards to firewatch.camera

Posted by austin_walker

@russcat: Oh jeeeeze. Going back now. Forgot to fix it with all of the other audio issues!

This is a great interview, top to bottom. It's especially nice to hear a little bit about the voiceover process because it's an aspect of game development that you don't typically get to peek behind the curtain at.

You can tell Rich Sommer is a fine actor because he seems like a super nice guy despite playing an insufferable arsehole on Mad Men.

Posted by bassguy

Really happy you were able to salvage this, Austin.

Posted by azMONKza

Good job fixing the audio if you hadn't said there was a problem I wouldn't have even noticed!

Posted by bigwinnerx

Great interview. Thanks for the extra work on this one, Austin. It's appreciated on our end. :)

Super cool interview!

Great interview once again.

I was literally coming on here to say, "Dude, I had no idea that was Harry Crane..."

Oh wow I watched the Quick Look and thought the player character sounded familiar, but had no clue that it was Rich Sommer! He played such a spectacularly great asshole on MAD MEN!

Posted by Wazanator

If you are listening to this with headphones turn down the volume right before 1:04:25 or you may go deaf.

That said great interview can't wait for another one Austin!

Posted by kingjulesxii

An interview with Harry Crane himself! Super excited to listen to this later. Nice get, Austin.

Rich! Whats the situation on flight mh370?

Edited by JohnyMyko

I really like this intro music.

As for the quality of the audio, it kinda sounds like they're talking with each other using old radios, so I guess it kinda fits the theme of the game.

Posted by BBQBram

Finished the game and see this, excellent.

Crossing fingers for LA Noire questions.

Every time I load up Audacity I feel like I'm one click away from loading a 1998 build of Winamp.

Here's Audacity, and here's Logic Pro, and there's the chasm between the only audio tools anyone seems to use.

Posted by djames216

For any Rich Sommer fans out there, he's made appearances on Wil Wheaton's Tabletop board game show and some (not all) episodes of season 3 of boardgamegeek's Game Night Youtube series. I've not seen any of his work (including Med Men) but his knowledge and passion for board games is very apparent. Seems like a cool guy.

Filed under Far Cry 2. Now that's the Idle Thumbs I know.

Posted by Detraya

I enjoyed the interview, but the beep after the spoiler almost deafened me :(. totally not headphone safe.

Posted by austin_walker

@wazanator: @detraya: Fixed this! Sorry folks, was working on repairing this the dozen different ways yesterday while home sick yesterday and totally missed this.

Damn. Beat me to it!

Firewatch is basically Far Cry 2 with actual decent voice acting.

Posted by poser

Firewatch has it's issues but it's the most pleasant world a game has taken me to in a long time.

PS: @austin_walker Also audio is fine, but thanks for the heads up! You should have seen some of the shows that Patrick and Alex posted.

Posted by Brodieblu

Awesome conversation, great discussion. Keep up the good work.

Posted by KaDoom

Austin did you piss off an angry vengeful audio engineer ghost in some past life of yours?
