Pokémon Black/White Landing Stateside Spring 2011

Posted by MattBodega (2276 posts) -

I'm a huge fan of the Pokémon franchise. I played the original Red/Blue release when it came out in America in '98--back when I was in grade school--and haven't missed the release of a main series game since. I even love some of the offshoots, like Pokémon Snap, Pokémon Trading Card Game, and Pokémon Pinball. To give you context, I went and purchased Pokémon HeartGoldthe day it came out. I still don't have a copy of Red Dead Redemption. Clearly, I am doing this whole video game thing all the waywrong.

Suffice to say, I'm pretty stoked Nintendo has announced that  Pokémon Black/White will be released in North America next spring on the DS(and not the 3DS). The first all-new Pokémon RPG since Diamond/Pearl came out in 2007,  Pokémon Black/White seems like it will make bolder use of the series' polygonal graphics to render larger environments in new perspectives. So that's cool. I bet you still fight gym leaders though...and meet a professor what got a tree name...and learn how to surf...and do the exact same thing we've done in every single Pokémon RPG since 1996.

Nintendo also revealed each game's exclusive "Legendary" Pokémon that will be on the front of the box. Check 'em!

Reshiram is the "Legendary" Pokémon in the Black version...

...and Zekrom is the "Legendary" Pokémon in the White version.

Pokémon fans, you know the drill; the version of the game you want to purchase is one with the cooler  Pokémon on the front of the box. I'll be getting the White version, 'cause look at that guy.

What version will you be getting when the game comes out on the DS next spring?

Have to agree with you there. Reshiram looks too...simple?
#5 Posted by Zaapp1 (691 posts) -

They look so...different?  Maybe?

#6 Posted by Dogma (1006 posts) -

No...I would go for the Black one too.

I find it confusing that this release seems to match upp with the expected release of the 3DS in both terrotories. Do you guys think that we can expect som ekind of 3D revelation during E3 about this new Pokémon game? it just seems dumb to NOT use Pokémon as a flagship title for you new system.

Black and white.  Light and Dark.  Yin and Yang.  Think of it this way, white side gets black dot, black side gets white dot.

I like the black one. It reminds me of mewtwo.

I actually haven't played Pokemon since the days of Red/Blue, but I'm looking forward to trying out the new games next year.

#16 Posted by AzureFlame (30 posts) -

Definitely getting Black mostly for Reshiram and I just like Black more than White.

#17 Posted by dillinger (179 posts) -

probably white.

#18 Posted by White_Silhouette (488 posts) -

Wouldn't be surprised if both legendary pokemon in each game. Or a year after they will come out with Pokemon Grey. With another legendary.

I just want to get me a Smugleaf.

#19 Posted by Queen_Of_Hearts (10 posts) -

btw the names are the wrong way round. Zekrom is the black p okémon in the white game and Reshiram is the white  p okémon in the black game.

#20 Posted by JackSukeru (6102 posts) -
Black, cause I'll take "Armored Dragon" over "Bird Dragon" any day.

Man, I can't believe I'm going to replay Pokemon...again.

#22 Posted by Yabbs (13 posts) -

Once you go Black you never go back.

#23 Posted by triple07 (1239 posts) -

I'm actually thinking of getting this one since I haven't played a Pokemon game since the ones on the  Game Boy Color. I was about to pick up Diamond when I heard about these so I guess I'll wait for these.

An American and a Brit would say that wouldn't they. :p

Look at this low poly badness.
They'll make use of polygon graphics? Really? If it's Gamefreak I hope they either hired some 3D artists or went to school, because the last 3D thing I can recall them doing is Pokemon Ranch and those graphics were soo LOL. It is one of my dreams to see a full on 3D pokemon game, like everything done RIGHT, but I don't think it will happen on a handheld. And I don't think Gamefreak are the ones that are going to do it.

Also, if they're upping the graphics are they also upping the story? If it's totally played out like every other cliche Pokemon handheld game I won't be interested. At all. I don't understand how they can make the same game for 10+ years and still do it out again and again. There are minor additions and tweaks, but nothing truly game changing. They're going to make a lot of money regardless if I buy it, and that will drive them to make the same thing again.

I was a die-hard fan like you, Matt, but I just can't throw my money away like this anymore. Especially not when I can just play a previous gen title and get the exact same enjoyment out of it.

Isn't that, and forgive me for saying this, a Xiaolin Showdown reference? Or an Avatar reference?

I thought they just released 2 new games this year.

#29 Posted by FluxWaveZ (19816 posts) -

Names in the article are wrong:

Reshiram
is the legendary in Pokémon Black.
Zekrom is the legendary in Pokémon White.

It doesn't matter if you're black or white. Until you see the legendaries. THEN IT MATTERS,

It will probably hold no 3DS feature as the game will release earlier in Japan than in North America and there is no indication of 3DS special feature or whatever on the official boxart they released.  At the most, it'll probably have some DSi features, but again, no indication of that was on the boxart so I'm expecting Pokémon Black/White to be a straight up DS game.

So wait...they've exhausted the color palette?

Also looks like they've exhausted the animal palette. Finally, Pokemon has entered the age of postmodernist abstraction / idolatry.

Not new games--remakes.

When's the last time it was "Pokémon *color*" when it wasn't Blue/Red/Yellow?
#34 Edited by RecSpec (4611 posts) -

I wonder if they will have another Pokewalker.
I have a level 100 Haunter from just walking, only have one badge.
Probably have 150 or so pokemon in my computer, Haha

The black one reminds me of Ultima (Ultimate?) Weapon from FFVII.
Can't remember the exact name.

The legendary Pokemon in Black and White look like Digimon.

" @FluxWaveZ:  Emerald I believe counts as a Green? But if it doesn't does Fire Red/Leaf Green count? "

No, as an emerald is a precious stone, following the conventional nomenclature of the games following Generation I.  FireRed and LeafGreen are called that as they are literal remakes of the first games, which were named after colors.  They're naming the Gen. V games 'Black' and 'White' as they should be considered a renewing of the series; ditching all of the precious stone and metal names (Diamond, Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby...) and going back to colors (black and white).

#46 Posted by Afroman269 (7440 posts) -

I will definitely get it but damn....those legendaries look bad.

#47 Posted by MisterMouse (3599 posts) -

The Black version looks pretty baller

#48 Posted by Sticky_Pennies (2031 posts) -

Why does the first legendary have a giant fur/feather-penis?

Man, White is the one for me!
