Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver are Nintendo DS remakes of the second generation Pokemon games for the GameBoy Color

Overview

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver are remakes of Pokémon Gold and Silver similar to how  Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen were remakes of Pokémon Red and Blue. The games will feature updated graphics and sound, as well as other new features. One of the most visible is that one Pokemon can now follow you around outside of battle, much like Pikachu did in Pokémon Yellow. It has been revealed that all 493 Pokémon will be able to follow the trainer around outside of its Poké ball. The legendary Pokémon Kyogre and Groudon (from Pokémon Sapphire and Pokémon Ruby respectively) will make appearances in the games. Kyogre will be catchable in HeartGold, Groudon will be catchable in SoulSilver, and having both on the same cart will present the player with an opportunity to catch Rayquaza.  Also if you trade over your Arceus from Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum, Cynthia will appear at a brand new section called the Ruins of Alph and are in a place named the Shinto Ruins.  If you do this you will be able to catch a level 1 Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina.  Team Rocket will also be returning with new uniforms that more resemble the uniforms from FireRed and Leaf Green.  There will be a new mini-game added that will replace Pokemon Contests, called the Pokéathlon.

HeartGold and SoulSilver are to be released September 12th, 2009 in Japan for the tenth anniversary of the original Gold and Silver release.  Recent scans of CoroCoro magazine show new areas having introductory cut scenes, much like Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, yet was mysteriously absent from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.  A new female protagonist – different from the female protagonist introduced in Pokémon Crystal – will also be introduced as a character choice in the very beginning of the game.  It is speculated that the character opposite your chosen character's gender will play role as a support character.

PokéWalker

The PokéWalker
The PokéWalker
In Japan, Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver will come with a pedometer called the PokéWalker. The device is very similar in concept to the Pokémon Pikachu 2 peripheral that could be used to send Mystery Gifts to the original Pokémon Gold and Silver using the Game Boy Color's infrared port. This time, however, the player can transfer any Pokémon they own to it, and they will gain experience and happiness as the player takes steps. The PokéWalker will use a currency called "Watt" that can be used to purchase items to send to HeartGold and SoulSilver. The device will also include a number of minigames and can be used to have battles with other Pokémon. It has not yet been confirmed if the US and European versions will come with the PokeWalker.
