Health Health is a value that gauges how much damage a player can take in a game before they die or pass out. Also known as Hit Points (HP) or Life in some games - not to be confused with Lives. |

Character Growth A character in the game actually increase in size. This maybe a temporary or permanent transformation. |

Different Versions Various franchises release "versions" of the same game. These games are basically the same, but each one lacks something the other has. |

Revive The concept of Reviving somebody who is dead or down. |
|
|
Poison A concept in games most often seen in RPGs and FPS games. Many RPGs have certain attacks that while doing low damage, poison the enemy causing them to take damage over time. FPS games sometimes have similar uses of poisons such as rooms filled with poison gas damaging you as you walk around in them. |

Desperation Move Used as a last ditch effort the desperation move is often a single, powerful attack that hits multiple enemies on screen. The attack is executed at the cost of a percentage of the user's total hit-points. |

Side Quests Quests that aren't necessary for game completion. Often they simply lengthen a game with pointless collecting. |
|
|
Remake Uses the nostalgia of a beloved classic combined with updated graphics and gameplay. |

Random Encounter Random encounters are often used in RPGs to put the player into combat situations when they are walking around the world map. |

DoT (Damage over Time) DoT effects are most commonly found in Role Playing Games, and it describes the effects of a gameplay mechanic (often a magic spell) that causes incremental damage over a period of time such as a fire spell leaving someone to continually burn. |

Hit Points An indication of the amount of damage a character can sustain in game. The loss of all hit points results in the players death, or penalty. |

|
Transformations A transformation is a different stage or form for something. Usually an upgrade. |

|
Leveling Up The process by which characters reach a new level, gain greater attributes, and learn more abilities. It usually involves earning enough experience points. |

Guilty Pleasure Some games are embarrassing to play, but we enjoy playing them anyway. |

Melee From Beat-em-ups to fighting games to modern FPS, one dude hitting another has made an enjoyable pastime. |

Inventory A gameplay mechanic allowing players to store their items and freely carry them around. |
|
|
Pokémon Pokémon are creatures that inhabit the Pokémon universe and can be captured and trained for battle. |

Currency Currency has all forms in video games. It is used to buy characters, vehicles, weapons, and more. |

Rock-paper-scissors Mostly in games that involve strategy. It involves special attributes determining the strengths and weaknesses of each move, species, character or type. They often offset each other in a complicated series of rock-paper-scissors relationships. |

Life Drain A process by which one player/creature's health points are transferred to another, particularly via a spell, technique or item. |

Fast Travel A device used in many games with vast open worlds, to travel instantaneously from one place to another. sometime appears in the form of an item or skill. |

Monster Capturing This feature typically found in RPGs lets you capture enemies and then use them in your own party. |

Game Over Game Over originally appeared in pinball machines and, later, arcade machines. When you lose at a game, it is game over. |

Pokemon Battle This is how to fight other pokemon throughout the many different regions in all Pokemon games. |

Animal Husbandry Whether making pinatas do the dance of love or breeding two Pokemon together, making fictional creatures make the fictional creature with two backs is a popular game concept. |

Exploration Concept where everything you need isn't always spelled out for you on the map. Sometimes even the map is not there till you go explore it. |

Anime Games A game based on an anime or a game that had an anime adapted from it. |

Breeding Combining or raising animals, plants, or any variant of living items into a child or new item. |

Status Effects A condition which affects a character's effectiveness, either positively or negatively. Common examples include Poison or Haste. |

Recurring Boss A boss that you fight multiple times throughout the game. Usually follows the player as they progress. |

|
Non-Player Character Characters controlled by the game for players to interact with, as opposed to player characters, the characters controlled by whomever is playing the game. |

Player Character Any character you play in a game is a PC, or a character controlled by the player, as opposed to a non-player character (NPC), character controlled by the game or AI. |

Enemy Capture Enemy Capture is a game mechanic that enables the player to capture or charm enemies and use them. The capture mechanics and the ways enemies are used are myriad, but the effects are always beneficial to the player. |

Self-Destruct When the character blows itself up, inflicting damage, or when the character falls, flies, or is otherwise ejected from the arena by their own actions. |
