Overview
Pokémon Tretta is a collectible card-based turn-based strategy game developed by Takara Tomy A.R.T.S. (along with Marvelous AQL) and released by Takara Tomy A.R.T.S. for arcades in Japan on July 14, 2012. It was later discontinued on July 7, 2016 in favor of its successor, Pokémon Ga-Olé.
A spin-off of the Pokémon RPG series and a successor to Pokémon Battrio, Pokémon Tretta uses square tiles (known as "Tretta", 41mm on each side) to represent different Pokémon and uses a new turn-based battle system that is more reminiscent of the mainline RPGs. It also allows players to search for groups of wild Pokémon of different ratities in an attempt to capture them similar to the mainline RPGs, dispensing them to the player as Trettas.
Unlike in Battrio, the game no longer has players positioning each of their three Pokémon on the playfield. Instead, players place their three Trettas on specific slots on the scanner and take turns attacking the opposing party with each of their Pokémon (who can now use up to three different attacks), with limited interaction with the Trettas themselves. It uses a roulette system for determining the strength of attacks and has two buttons that can be mashed to both power-up attacks and defenses.
The game uses a new unique cabinet with a rotated tall-screen display that is sectioned off by the cabinet's frame, giving the illusion of multiple screens (one for the main display, two for smaller indicators, and one for the game's dial and roulette system). The game is also notable for its dial controller, which is positioned under the display towards the player.
The game uses a custom IC Card system, known as the "Tretta Report", for tracking player progress. The game also received a special Nintendo 3DS peripheral on August 10, 2013, known as Pokémon Tretta Lab for Nintendo 3DS, that allows players to scan and battle Trettas.
Similar to Battrio, the game received multiple major revisions (changing certain aspects of the game system while adding new game mechanics) and several expansion sets (adding new Trettas). In 2016, the game was discontinued and replaced by its incompatible successor, Pokémon Ga-Olé.
