    Luigi's Mansion

When Luigi first enters the mansion alone, looking for the missing Mario, he is attacked by ghosts, at which point Prof. E. Gadd saves him using the Poltergust 3000. He teaches Luigi how to use the Poltergust before sending him back into the mansion to defeat ghosts with the Poltergust and rescue Mario.

To capture ghosts in the game Luigi has to stun them with his flashlight and then drain their health and capture them with the Poltergust. He can also suck up various elementals to make the Poltergust shoot fire, water, or ice, and suck up money as well. After defeating each boss Luigi returns to Gadd who removes the contents of the Poltergust, placing portrait ghosts in portraits and collecting the money picked up by Luigi.

    Other Appearances

In Super Smash Bros. Melee the Poltergust 3000 is part of the Vacuum Luigi trophy, and in Super Smash Bros. Brawl the Poltergust is a trophy in itself. The Poltergust also makes a brief cameo in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. In Mario Power Tennis Luigi's defensive shot involves using the Poltergust to deflect the ball.

    Development

Luigi's Mansion was largely inspired by the movie Ghostbusters, and it can be noted that in Ghostbusters the characters capture ghosts using gadgets not unlike the Poltergust 3000.
