Electronic Arts Purchases PopCap, Jeff Green for $750 Million

Missing: piles of money.

The rumors are true: Electronic Arts has purchased PopCap Games and former games editor turned director of editorial and social media Jeff Green for $750 million.

Based on reaching certain financial milestones, the deal could reach as high as $1.3 billion, which jives with the original $1 billion number that was floating around not too long ago.

It's unclear how much Green, whose last name is quite a convenient coincidence, will make out of this.

The deal means EA now adds Plants vs. Zombies, Bejeweled, Peggle and other lucrative franchises into the company's lineup. EA has been aggressively moving into the mobile and social space in recent years, acquiring one of the biggest developers, PlayFish, for $300 million in 2009.

Good for EA

#7 Posted by Rolyatkcinmai (2661 posts) -

They could have rented the Staples Center for that.

Just when Jeff Green thinks he's out, THEY PULL HIM BACK IN!

#15 Posted by FadedOasis (61 posts) -

How long until EA pulls all of PopCap's games from Steam so they can sell them exclusively on Origin?

#16 Posted by Balex1908 (142 posts) -

Someone at EA really hates Jeff Green.

Jeff Green cannot escape the iron fist of EA.

Is it possible to run Bejeweled into the ground? Let's see.

In other news, PopCap removes sharp objects from Jeff Green's office; initiates 24-hour surveillance.

#24 Edited by buzz_killington (3532 posts) -

Battlefield vs. Zombies coming soon to a mobile device near you!!

Also as a lot of people have already said, Riccitielo did it just to piss off Jeff Green. EA rules all.

#25 Posted by Rirse (251 posts) -

Guess that means in ten years EA will rename their download manager the "Popcap". This is terrible news.

#26 Posted by wsowen02 (307 posts) -

Oh man, and here I thought I had an original joke about Jeff Green

#27 Posted by MisterMouse (3531 posts) -

Hahahaha that is hilarious, Jeff Green is right back there all over again.

#28 Posted by Rhaknar (5940 posts) -

guess this means no more popcap games on Steam?

#29 Posted by msavo (7522 posts) -

So technically is Jeff Green now an EA employee?

#30 Posted by rjayb89 (7713 posts) -

GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN, JEFF GREEN.

Can't wait for the next Jeff Green Bombcast appearance, especially if he were to leave PopCap.  Good luck to him, it's a straight up mafioso situation.

Jeff Green:

THERE IS NO ESCAPE.

#33 Posted by sirdesmond (1223 posts) -

Wow, I have a friend who was working for a Facebook developer for a bit, became a PopCap employee when PopCap bought his original company just a few months ago, and now he is an EA employee.

Companies buying companies buying companies.

Part of me can imagine an EA executive plotting this whole thing just because of Jeff Green.

Excellent.  Bejeweled 4 will have you paying extra to include the green gems in the game.

#38 Posted by yakov456 (1872 posts) -

Ugh, will there be an update for PvsZ that enables sandwich board wearing zombies with EA ads plastered all over them?

Wut?

I'd buy it... and probably for 3-4 different platforms.

I have... problems (but I can also play Plants vs. Zombies anywhere.)

Jeff Green was the advance recon team. EA sent him, he scoped out the place, said some shit about EA to protect his cover, and now they smoothly real in their big fat casual fish.

Nicely played Mr. Green.

#44 Posted by Mr_Skeleton (5117 posts) -

They must really love Jeff Green over at EA.

#45 Edited by picklecannon (263 posts) -

they could've rented the staples center with that kind of money

#46 Posted by Cybexx (1099 posts) -

So, now I'm curious how this affects Popcap's relationship with Blizzard. Does the Bejeweled / Peggle / Plants vs Zombies stuff get pulled from WoW?

#47 Posted by ManiacMaysin (360 posts) -

So, Mr. Green, how does it feel to be working for EA . . . again?

#48 Edited by Kyreo (4600 posts) -

@Rolyatkcinmai: Nah they would have needed another 25 million.

I'm actually glad this happened. EA needed a moneymaker.

#49 Posted by Redbullet685 (5980 posts) -

Thats a lot of money for PopCap.
