And we come full circle.
PopCap Games, Inc.
Company »
PopCap Games is a popular developer and publisher of casual games. To date, they have sold over one billion games. PopCap games are available on the web, PC , PS3,Mac, Xbox, Xbox 360, cell-phones, PDAs, Ipods and some other mobile devices.
Electronic Arts Purchases PopCap, Jeff Green for $750 Million
As Major Nelson put it on Twitter:
Looks like EA will do anything to get @ Greenspeak back on staff.
EA gets a bad rap but they've put a lot of time and effort behind Dead Space, Mirrors Edge, Alice, and Shadows of the Damned NONE of which were established franchises that were guaranteed any sort of success which is something that shareholders usually like to see. I think they've done a fantastic job with that stuff, I guess that all fell under the partners umbrella? Either way good for you EA, I interviewed at PopCap and everyone seemed to love working there so I hope that continues.
I hope they make Plants vs. Zombies 2 soon.
But Jeff Green isn't moving right? Isn't everyone still going to work at the same place? If so then its no biggie for Jeff. But the irony is palpable.
Surprised that Jeff Green costs as much as an Activision concert at the Staples Center....

Now that EA has bought them, I'm jusst going to go ahead and call this here and now for the record books; the next Bejewled is going to come with store exclusive DLC. If you want the game to have green gems you will have to buy it at Futureshop. If you want red gems EB Games. Blue Gems Wal Mart. They will also sell day one DLC to unlock half the modes in the game for $5 a pop.
Boom! They could have rented the Staples Center for that.
But seriously, 750 million for Popcap?! That blows my mind. Surely EA must be either losing many millions of dollars with this deal or have learnt of some revolutionary shit that'll make billions because there's no way that Bejeweled and Plants VS Zombies is worth that much.

There are people out there that value Zynga higher than EA.
Just to put things in perspective, mobile and social games are huge. Maybe also a huge bubble, but who can say right now?

Yeah, I mean, my aunt bought a boxed copy of the latest Bejeweled game. There's obviously a whole other market out there.
THEY STILL MAKE BOXED GAMES FOR COMPUTATIONAL DEVICES
