Just days before the start of this year's E3, Valve Software revealed that Portal 2 had not sufficiently assumed the proper position to be escorted to its Fall 2010 release, and would have to be subsequently delayed. It was just one of the half-a-dozen major Q4 releases that have been pushed to next year, leaving the Thanksgiving release season looking a little dryer than it has been in years past.

 Soonish!

However, it looks like we won't have to wait too much longer beyond Turkey Day before we can head back to Aperture Science; Today, Game Informer revealed on its website that Portal 2 would be hitting retail and digital shelves on February 9, 2011. As Valve has stated previously, Portal 2 is aiming to launch on all announced platforms simultaneous, so hopefully the PC, Mac, 360 and PS3 versions will all make that February 9 launch.

In addition to the release date, Game Informer also revealed a taste of Portal 2's voice cast. As Valve has shown in previews of the game, Portal 2 will see you exploring the remains of Aperture Science with several different personality spheres, helping to progress the story as well as solve some of the game's new puzzles. The E3 demo of Portal 2, in particular, shows off one of these personality spheres: a nervy, excitable, and slightly incompetent sphere named Wheatley

Valve has told GI that, in the final version of the game, Wheatley will be played by actor Stephen Merchant,  the co-creator, writer, and actor on the original British version of The Office. The E3 demo of Portal 2 did not feature Merchant playing Wheatley, but, at the very least you use this gameplay video to get a sense of the character he will portray in the game.

Let's just hope that this release date isn't a lie, and that Valve can hold to its newest projected date for their highly anticipated puzzle game.

Kessler...!?  But I thought you were supposed to be dead!

Oh, and Portal 2's cool and all, but I kind of doubt they'll hit that launch date.  It would surprise me that Valve actually succeeds in doing that, for once.

Everyone else is reporting Feb 9, 2011, though some suspecting that may be the Euro release date.  Any reason for the differences?

#18 Posted by MattBodega (2276 posts) -

Oh right! I forgot to mention that to y'all. My internship is proper over, but the GB crew was happy enough with my writing that they've allowed me to continue working on News for the site, even when I'm back at school.

So, yeah. I'm back!

While I thought the "placeholder voice" for Wheatley was pretty great, I can't wait to see what Stephen Merchant does with it. Awesome choice.

#24 Posted by dvorak (1510 posts) -

If it's January and the date is still the same, then maybe we can believe them. Right now it's almost completely ignorable.

#25 Posted by ArmedBear (247 posts) -

The crew is going to pay Kessler in Twinkies.

@MattBodega:  BEHOLD! THE KESSLER IS DEAD! LONG LIVE THE KESSLER!

Also I liked the original voice of Wheatley, but I've heard great things about Steven Merchant and I adore Ricky Gervais so excitement, I HAS IT!
#29 Posted by Baillie (4598 posts) -

Why is no one excited for Steve Merchant? That guy is awesome.

The placeholder voice over for Wheatley was the one thing that was putting me off. It was cringe worthy, then it is maybe because I am British myself  and I couldn't for the life of me work out what sort of accent it was supposed to be.

Merchant? Might be good might be bad hopefully he lays off the ham between now and recording.

#43 Posted by Scooper (7920 posts) -

Merchant will hopefully be way better then that other placeholder gimboid we heard in that trailer. That guy was so cringeworthy. They better stick to this release date this time.
