Portal 2 is to be the next installment in Valve's hit Portal franchise. Not much is known about Portal 2 as of yet, though some clues have mentioned a possible antagonist, Cave Johnson, deceased CEO of Aperture Science.

Portal 2 Overview

Will GLaDOS return for Portal 2?
Will GLaDOS return for Portal 2?
On February 20, 2008 Kimberly Swift, lead designer on Portal, told reporters at the Game Developers Choice Awards in San Francisco (where Portal won Game of the Year) that plans were already underway for Portal 2. This was the first word about any such sequel (or prequel), as a month earlier Valve spokesman Doug Lombardi only said that more Portal would be coming and that it wouldn't simply be more puzzles. In October of 2008 Portal: Still Alive was released, confirming what Lombardi said wouldn't happen, simply more puzzles. This begs the question, did Swift go off the script and drop info she wasn't supposed to yet? Doesn't really make any difference either way. All that matters is that more Portal is on its way.

Rumored Details of Portal 2

While very little is known about Portal 2 as of now, in June 2008 Kotaku received reports from a tipster about a casting call for a voice-only job on Portal 2. Without giving too much away, the job called for an actor to voice an "eccentric dead billionaire" in his 60s by the name of Cave Johnson. From the rumor, and it must be stressed this is only a rumor, Johnson will be a part time sidekick and later key antagonist (much like GLaDOS was in Portal, but maybe more personally attached this time around). Also, the inclusion of Johnson, even if just immortalized in an artificial intelligence system reminiscent of a fabled Walt Disney post-mortem stunt, begs the question: will Portal 2 be a prequel? After all, despite GLaDOS' being "Still Alive," events at the end of Portal lend themself to a bit of a cliff hanger. A prequel is a definite possibility; where was Cave Johnson prior to Portal? Though only a Training Simulation, GLaDOS seemed to be running the show. Once this detail is fleshed out by Valve, we may have a clearer picture of where Portal 2 will be heading.

It would not be much of a surprise if Portal 2 creates stronger bonds with Half Life 2: Episode 3. After all, the end of Episode 2 led us all to belief that Gordon and Alyx were going to continue on their journey to the vanished Aperture Science owned ship, the Borealis. It's not too much of a stretch to imagine that portal technology pioneered by Aperture Science was involved somehow in the disappearance of the ship. Portal 2 may address, or at least fuel the fire of mystery around, this Half Life/Aperture Science connection. If for nothing else, it may serve as a great marketing effort in preparation for the release of Episode 3 in, presumably, 2010.
