A portal is a hole in reality connected to another hole in reality, whether magical or scientific in nature, that allows a person to instantly travel incredibly vast distances simply by walking through one.

Especially since the popularity of games like the straightforwardly-titled Portal, or to a lesser extent the first-person-shooter Prey, these handy gateways have been taking a much larger role in video games than ever before. 
 
Portals are frequently colored orange and blue. Nobody really knows why.
