Spiderman, Splintercell, Vice City, Devil May Cry, Call of Duty

It seems that those 2002-ish games made a lasting impact on the game industry, with so many games now combining elements from any two of them to make something new.

Everyday there comes another new title, set in an "open world", requiring you to sneak past enemies, climb tall buildings, and slice through foes in the third person, starring a jaded hero wearing something like a hooded sweatshirt. And then comes the games that are further clones of the first set, like inFAMOUS and Prototype are to Assassin's Creed, which itself was to the 2002 games.

And I'm not saying it is a terrible situation, those four games were, well besides Spiderman, great. But I think the formula is set to run dry. And before long, games like Final Fantasy VS. 13 will give way to, "well what if we made a Devil May Cry God of War type game set in the Lego universe? With a hoodie and 5:00 shadow?" Its like we can simply break down games announced at E3 nowadays as "well here a GTA sandbox game. Heres a new Devil May Cry type game. Here is a stealth action game only this time starring a sexy woman. Here is a World War 2 FPS, only this time you play from Ireland's perspective, heres a Superpower game in NYC only it takes place in the 1950's..."

I didn't know anyone considered Spiderman game changing - I mean I don't even know which SM game you're talking about.

As for the other games, Splinter Cell I can get behind, but it's not like there are many games that take after it's formula.

You really mean GTA III instead of Vice City and I'd consider MoH:Allied Assault over Call of Duty.

Not at all.  Spiderman wasn't, unless you mean 2, which you could say HUlk: UD, Crackdown, Prototype, etc. are based off.

Splinter Cell was new and innovative, but really something unique no one copied

Vice City was just GTA3 with a new skin

Devil May Cry yes, i think (which came first, genma onimushu or this?)

Call of Duty was almost exactly like Medal of Honor

I see what your saying about GTA3 and Medal of Honor and Hitman, its just that Call of Duty and Vice City were the games that were the most critically acclaimed and best selling in the genres, that put those types of games in the limelight.

And you're right, I was thinking of Spiderman 2, a critical "hit or miss" that sold like hell, and you can "see it" in Crackdown and even Just Cause 2's grappling feature.

Ditto to the Sims and Halo. Both games came from that 2000-2003 period. Roller Coaster tycoon was pretty popular, but the Sims became huge, and now theres a bazillion imitators. Suprisingly, it took a while for Halo to be copied, but you can clearly see the blatent knockoffery in games like Haze and Timeshift

My point is is that, for better or worse, those bunch of games from the early part of the decade have been significantly immitated. And I think they are the modern equivalents to what Final Fight was in the end of the arcade era. Everything from Streets of Rage to the "Power Rangers Movie" game were in the "Final Fight" genre. And we have those hits and misses in the clones of today, but seemingly much more misses than hits, oh god especially with GTA imitators.

I'll be sure to forget about those. I do ever try so.

Also, Vice City sucked.

Halo was industry changing whether you like it or not, without Halo we might not have an Xbox 360, and it might be just a two way battle between Nintendo and Sony at the moment without Halo.

Right, because a single game dictates if a system exists or not. Like I'm supposed to be upset that "it might be just a two way battle between Nintendo and Sony."  So? That's how it used to be. Since I'm mainly a PC gamer, whether or not the 360 exists doesn't really affect me all that much. I don't care how "industry changing" some average sci-fi FPS supposedly is.

Halo 1 was the reason millions of people bought a Xbox 1.  If you personally don't care that's a position of apathy that doesn't apply to reality.  Like it or not the 360 affects you as a PC gamer HUGELY these days.  If you don't care about how the platforms affect one another, maybe you don't care about gaming?

I don't care. Get over it. E3 just happened. I don't care. I didn't watch it, I didn't read any of the news about it.
