Aska just added Half-Life to a list - Top 3 favorite games of all time
Half-Life was a landmark for PC gaming at the time, and it still is the greatest shooter ever made. The pacing feels so right and all the guns have purpose and carry their weight when fighting. If you can get past the somewhat rocky story (which is getting pretty fleshed out as of HL2: Episode 2), you'll get to experience a marvel of gaming goodness. Valve rocks.

Aska just added EarthBound to a list - Top 3 favorite games of all time
Earthbound is one of those amazing games that went unbought by the gaming public. Almost everyone knows the main character by his appearances in Smash Bros., but noone really knows the games he came from. I know I didn't. Until I finally sat down and played through one of the best games in history. It's hard to put into words why this game is so amazing, so you'll just have to experience it yourself. Do yourself a favor and play this game.

Aska just added The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask to a list - Top 3 favorite games of all time
What can I say about Majora's Mask..? It's better than Ocarina of Time in my opinion. It told a better story, it was more emotional, it was darker and more "adult". It was highly underrated and I can replay it no matter how many times and still find enjoyment in it. Long live Majora's Mask and what it brought to my life. :D

About Me

Welcome to my profile and thanks for stopping by

My name is Dustin Bragg, and I'm 15 years old.

Gaming

I've been into video games for as long as I can remember.  My earliest gaming time was on my dad's NES, then onto the Genesis.  Out of all my platforms, I remember the Genesis as being the most prominent in my life.  NES, N64, and PSX also stick out in my mind.  In terms of the one game I remember the most, I'd say... damn this is tough trying to remember.

I can't remember there being one single game, so here are a few
  • Mortal Kombat 2 (GEN)
  • Sonic 3 (GEN)
  • Zelda: OoT & Zelda: MM (N64)
  • Banjo & Kazooie/& Tooie (N64)
  • Mario Kart 64

Now, there are probably tons more but I simply can't remember which games really got me into gaming as much as I am now, besides those listed.  Now that I'm older I can really appreciate what a good game is, and it's awesome.  My favorites are listed below, and I consider those the top of the top games and I highly recommend you check em out.

I also do a good amount of PC gaming.  Mostly all my PC games are on Steam, and Valve is one of the greatest gaming companies ever.  They're so in tune with their customers and I'm honored to be one.

Not much else to say without delving into stuff that I consider too personal.  So I'll leave it at that.  Drop me a PM or comment on the wall sometime!

Ryan posted something interesting here.  I listened to it and it was so cheesy but I really liked it.  I downloaded it...

Direct link to the song

I've been listening to it while browsing this site and even though it's super cheesy, it hits me with a weird feeling.  I started thinking of what was going on at the beginning of this year, and how excited I was that these guys were setting up a website like this.  I started thinking of how much work, and effort has gone into this site.  All the while, the song looping in the background.  Was kinda surreal.  I've really enjoyed this site and everything we're capable of doing.  The podcast is also great, I have almost every one inside their own folder and get the new ones right as they come out.

I was one of the first people to create an account here, I randomly checked the site one night and it still wasn't up.   I hit refresh right before going to bed and the site popped up, hit me like a ton of bricks.  Set my account up and started surfing.  Been here since.

So thanks Jeff, Ryan, Brad and Vinny.  This site is awesome, great job.

This post relates to: The Legend of Zelda, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Me holding the epic gold-holo cartridge

I'm sure most people who know me will easily figure out how much I prefer Zelda: Majora's Mask over any other Zelda game, or any video game period.  I obsess over it and can't stop talking about it.  Anyway, I thought I'd make a blog-post dedicated to one of the greatest games ever!

The game's title screen
Majora's Mask is arguably the darkest, saddest, most emotional video game in the Zelda franchise.  That's what I love about it, it tells a better story because of this, and can pull at your heart strings in way Ocarina of Time never could (you'll see me compare this to OoT a lot in this post).  So many people just don't like the game because it's so radically different than it's predecessor.  They can't connect with it or simply don't give it a chance.

Playing this game fills me with many different emotions...  a strange mix of happyness and dispare, sadness, longing, etc.  I can't explain why but all these emotions piled into one makes for one hell of an experience.  It really pains me to see people so blinded by OoT that they just pass this game off as garbage.  I sincerely hope you'll try the game after reading this.

The game came so late in the N64's life, I feel that's another reason it didn't get the praise it so awfully deserves.  This game is a true masterpiece. This might sound incredibly stupid and highly exaggerated but I just have a strong affection for this game, so of course I take it a bit seriously.

What, exactly, makes this game so amazing?  I'll try and fill all that in within this post.  If you made it this far, prepare for more and thanks for reading!

As I type this I'm listening to the game's soundtrack, to get into the mood.
Majora
The Skull-Kid, with Tatl's brother Tale. He's wearing Majora's Mask.
The game starts off oddly, no princess needing saving, no country under attack, no epic adventure about some kid who doesn't know he's destined to save an aincent land, none of that.  This being a direct sequel to OoT, it's the same Link.  It's simply Link looking for his Navi, riding Epona through some woods he's suddenly ambushed by an evil Skull-Kid wearing a horrifying mask.  The Skull-Kid steals the Ocarina of Time and runs off on Epona, as Link realizes this he grabs on and is eventually flung off.  He begins chasing the Skull-Kid and eventually they meet again, in a strange, dark, scary looking area.  The Skull-Kid mocks Link, and says he "disposed of his horse".  You can imagine the emotional and mental strain this must take on him.  Suddenly the Skull-Kid, using the power of Majora's Mask, turns Link into a Deku, a plant-like race from the Zelda universe.  Afterwhich, the Skull-Kid leaves with his two fairies following suit, however one of them, Tatl, doesn't make it through the opening and is left behind with Link who is still shooken up by his Deku-fate.

The Mask collector
The Mask salesman/collector
They eventually decide to help eachother out to get out of that room, they make their way through and eventually come into a clock tower, where a creepy looking Mask Salesman starts to tell Link that he can help him return to his true form if he can bring some sort of instrument to him.  In return, he wants help getting a mask back from a Skull-Kid that took it from him, that Skull-Kid is the same one Link's been having trouble with, and that mask it Majora's Mask.  He tells of the Mask's strange dark powers, and how the land of Termina will end in disaster if the Skull-Kid so wishes.  Link agrees, without much choice.  As you more than likely know, he gets the Ocarina back.  However, it's just before the Moon falls to Earth because of the Skull-Kid and Majora's Mask.  Link than remembers Zelda, and how the Song of Time might help.  He plays the mystical song, and gets sent back in time 3 days earlier, back where he found the mask salesman, and noone but him and Tatl remember.  Since he now has the Ocarina, the mask salesman teaches link a special healing melody, which transforms Link back into a human and drops a mask in the form of the Deku he was imprisoned as.  The game pretty much officially starts here, and you can go from Deku to Human whenever you want.  It's a selectable item.

Zora
Goron
Deku
The game, as the title implies, revloves around masks.  As you do side-quests you gain more and more masks, these masks usually give Link minor abilities, like entering the night-time Milk Bar or running at a faster speed.  Besides these more common and non-required masks, there are four special transformation masks, three of which you must get to complete the game, one of which being the Deku mask I pointed out earlier.  I don't want to go into too much detail about the majority of these masks, or their special abilities or how you get them because I want people to play through this game after reading this and experience it for themselves.

You get special upgrades along the way too, most of these you'll get by collecting all the fairies floating around in the game's 4 dungeons and then bringing them to the fairy fountain located outside the respective dungeon.  The upgrades range from more magic, to a giant two-handed sword (which, by the way, is insanely powerful).  These, again, are completely optional but help tremendously if you take the time to get them.

There are so many side-quests and hidden things in this game it's unspeakable, there's just so much to see and do.  Even though I've gotten everything there is to get, I still enjoy just running around and finding stuff, useless stuff, but cool nevertheless.

You have only three days to complete the game, but as I said before Link has the power to reset that time.  After those three days are up, the Moon falls and crashes into Earth.  At that point it's basically a game over and you start back at the clock tower, however it's actually like you just played the song anyway, as if that whole thing never happened.  Restarting time makes anything you've done in the world reset, things inside dungeons, side-quest progress, etc.  However all your items and masks stay with you.

Now enough about the gameplay, I want to talk about why I find this game so amazing outside of all that.  It gives you so many things to think about...
  • The townspeople being unaware (and or just not caring) about the empending doom.
  • Link's psychee and mental well-being, you'd have to imagine him being pretty screwed up after witnessing all these horrible things, fixing them and making them right.  Then just going back and restarting time only to see that they're messed up again.  The feeling of isolation, and longing to have these people know what he's going through.
  • The origins of Majora's Mask, why is it so powerful and how did the mask salesman get it.

The people of Clock Town... so unaware
Stuff like that, thinking about it... I'm just in awe that I can pull all of that out of a video game.  It's amazing.

All in all, final words, in closing, whatever.  I really want more people to try this game and give it a chance, if you can connect with it you'll have an amazing gameplay experience and it really can't be matched.  If you don't... well, I guess you just aren't into this type of game.  I really appreciate the level of detail and work that went into this game and all the little touches they've added.

Please check it out, and thanks for reading.

Metroid Prime - Retro Studios' masterpiece

It had been almost 9 years since the last proper console Metroid game.  Everyone, everyone was skeptical about this when Nintendo announced it would be from a first-person shooter perspective.  Even more skeptical was the fact that some unknown texas-based developer, Retro Studios, was behind the project.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that all the skepticism can be thrown out the window.  Retro Studios has created a fantastic adventure that was above and beyond what you would expect from a Metroid game.  The worlds, rich and detailed.  The sound, atmospheric and quality.  The gameplay, controls, presentation, pacing, everything was just spot on and amazing.  I hope I can cover it all in this review.

It starts off with bounty hunter Samus Aran responding to a distress call from a Space Pirate Frigate Orpheon, where she finds herself thrust into a battle with a gigantic parasite.  Just after finishing the battle, the ship is starting to break down.  Alarms blaring and sirens whistling, Samus makes a mad dash back to her ship.  Along the way an explosive blast slams her into a wall and her suit loses all but the most basic abilities.  To make matters worse, she finds her old nemesis Ridley, only he's been transformed into a more metalic and menacing version of himself and now goes by the name Meta-Ridley.  Meta-Ridley flies away from the doomed frigate to nearby planet Tallon IV, so naturally, Samus follows suit.  Upon landing she finds herself in the tranquil, yet slightly eerie, Tallon Overworld region.  The real game, begins now.

You see the game through the eyes of Samus, behind a visor with all of the HUD looking like it's part of the visor.  It looks like what Samus sees inside the suit.  Right off the bat, you see the beauty of the visuals this game boasts.  It's raining, everything's wet, water is dripping off your visor which is refracting everything behind it, and it's just gorgeous.  In addition, you have wonderfully atmospheric music playing which sounds like it's straight out of Super Metroid.  Everything about the game's presentation is top-notch.

The gameplay constists of running around Tallon IV, with each little portion blocked off by doors, in standard Metroid style.  The designers made the world seem completely dynamic and load-free.  Everytime you shoot one of these doors, the game silently and smoothly loads the next little portion and the door opens into the next portion.  This makes for an extremely dynamic experience that never breaks you out of it.  You feel like you're in this world, alone, making your way through.  Now is the perfect time to talk about the game's excellent pacing.  You're goal is finding your powerups, and even ones you didn't have before, to reach previously unexplorable areas.  You might think, with such a huge and expansive world you'll get lost, right?  Wrong, even without their very convenient hint system, you can tell where you need to go just by the way the world is set up, it basically leads you along without you even realizing.  Or you come to a room where you know isn't the correct way, simply because you can't get past it with your current upgrades.  One instance, pretty early on, is a long rectangular room that is half filled with lava.  You see weird things hanging from the ceiling but aren't quite sure what they are and why this room is here.  Later on in the game you get the Grapple Beam and you have a Metroid-standard: "Hey!  This can be used in that one room!" moment.  So you make your way back and continue the game as usual.  This will happen constantly as you progress farther in the game, and it makes it very enjoyable and very rewarding as you figure these things out.

Samus is equipped with two visors and the standard beam when you start the game, but she will eventually find two more visors and three more beams.  All very unique and provide a variety of ways for getting around.  The default visors are the standard Combat Visor and the Scan Visor.  The Combat Visor is your basic view and you will be inside of it for the majority of the game.  It allows you to shoot, lock onto enemies, and do most of Samus' actions.  The Scan Visor let's you scan just about any thing of any importance in the world.  A lot of this is how the game shows it's storyline.  There aren't really cutscenes to carry along the story, but by scanning various things in the environment you read how the Space Pirates are planning to harvest Metroids, the history of Tallon IV, and much more.  Most of this is completely optional, which is nice because it's all text so you aren't being forced to read it all.  The other visors include the Thermal Visor and the X-Ray Visor.  Both should be pretty self-explainatory.  The new beams include the Wave Beam, which fires electricity charged shots.  The Ice Beam, shooting super-cooled shots that can be used to freeze enemies.   Finally, the Plasma Beam, which fires super-heated shots that do a good deal more damage than the rest, but fires slowly.  Besides combat they also have their uses for exploring the world.   In addition to the beams she also has missles she can fire, with an ever-expanding ammo supply for them by collecting Missle Expansion packs spread all throughout the world.

Another Metroid staple, that will look very odd to most people not familiar with the series, is the Morphing Ball, or just the Morph Ball.  This big armored suit that Samus is inside turns into a compact little ball that she can roll around with, at that time the game goes into third person.  This is useful for entering small holes that Samus couldn't get into otherwise, which you'll be doing a lot.  The Morph Ball can also set little mine-like bombs that blow up after about 2 seconds, if the Morph Ball is sitting near the bomb when it goes off, it will push it in the relative direction.  This is useful for getting to a variety of locations.  There are plenty of upgrades for the Morph Ball as well.  Ranging from the Spider Ball which lets it cling to magnetic surfaces, and the Boost Ball which does exactly what it says, gives the Morph Ball a short speed boost.

The boss fights are really all there is left to cover, and there isn't much to say other than they are friggin' amazing.  You'll fight a large metal dragon, a giant ice lizard, an armored bug thats actually smaller than you, and many more.  Each with it's own special way of defeating them that you must figure out.  All of it is very intuitive and very fun to find each one's weakness.

There is so much to see and do in this game that it's really hard to cover it all.  I really hope you check this game out.  It's an outstanding achievement and should be played by anyone who likes outstanding video games.  Retro Studios did it so right with this game, I applaud them.

This game is a masterpiece and I highly recommend it.
