Hey, I'm Kev. I have been gaming ever since I could walk to my friends houses to play some SNES and Playstation; But, I have grown from a casual fan to a full on enthusiast in a few years. I'm always looking for people to talk to about games. Don't be hesitant to send my a friend request.

Last year on the other hand had tons of games that I had to have; Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, God of War 2, Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, Bioshock, and Rock Band. Now I'm not saying that this years releases are bad I'm just saying that they don't suit my personal test.

Its about damn time.
I've never been a big fan of the GTA series. I tried to play GTA 3 and Vice City back on my PS2 but never got into it. The game play felt slow and clunky, the graphics were mediocre and the missions were repetative. GTA IV has alot of these same issues yet for some reason I find this game really compelling. The game play was improved alot however the shooting does not have a very visceral feel. All the people just feel like hollow rag dolls ready to drop at a hat. The cover is extremly messy and seems like they just tacked that on, most of the time I just have to resort to taking out a shot gun and blasting away as opposed to methodically picking everyone off. The movement in GTA IV also gets on my nerves, it also feel slow. I think that speeding up the movement speed would have helped out alot. The driving threw me for a loop to being with but after getting acustomed to it, I found it to be somewhat enjoyable.

The only thing that has been making me want to play this game is writing. While the story is just a run of the mill gangster action film type thing the writing makes it really fun to watch. It also introduces a really compelling cast of characters that I actually want to see what happens to them. The humour is uncanny considering that the people that make this game are in Ireland (I think thats right). Without the writing I don't think anyone would even tolerate this game. The game mechanics are mediocre at best and the story is cliche but that unique Rock star style makes all of that not seem like much of a big deal.

I guess you could call that a review.

Gaming has taken a back seat as school has dragged on. With friends taking up a majority of the rest of my free time it seems like there isn't any time left for gaming. All of my friends are getting Gears 2 and it just makes me want that game even more. I just hope I get to it before all my friends get tired of it. This was the case of Call of Duty 4. Once I got to it everyone was tired of it and had moved on. Gears 2 is the only thing that is really catching my eye this year. For me personally last year had alot more games that I wanted to play. This year has alot of great games but not many that I personally play. I'm gonna try blogging more often due to the fact that school seems to be slowing down but I make no promises.

I hate the fact that it seems like there is not to active of a scene at GiantBomb anymore. Even when posting to the forums there is not the massive amount of activity there was back when the site launched. I hope that eventually people will return and stay but who knows.

This post relates to: Have you ever waited in line for a midnight game release before? If so, what was it like?

Perhaps one day I'll wait out for a console. But from what I hear that sounds like a really horrifying experience.

This post relates to: Penny Arcade: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode Two

Running, Running, Running!
Penny Arcade Episode 2 is the continuation of the adventure game series by the writers of the Penny Arcade comic and Hot Head games. Episode 1 was a mediocre Adventure/RPG hybrid. The majority of the game was spent finding random maguffins in order to advance the story. The combat has your cast of heroes taking turns defeating an array of foes in typical RPG fashion. Both of these parts put together are not very interesting but that’s not what I noticed about the game.

For me the game was less of a game and more of an interactive comic adventure featuring Gabe and Tycho from the comic. In these terms this game was a huge success. The unique humor of the web comic translates extremely well into videogame form. Any text in the game has been subject of Penny Arcade’s unique writing style and had me laughing out loud from time to time; Which is extremely rare for me. The other aspect that separates this game from others like it is the art style. It should come to no surprise to readers of the comic that the 2D cut scenes are just like those you would read on the site. The 3D environments are also impressive; While each area is unique and full of details, there are not too many areas. The few areas in this game become somewhat tiring after you have been forced to go through again and again for the sake of advancing the story.

This game does nothing to revolutionize RPG’s or bring back the adventure genre. So for those who are looking for groundbreaking game play mechanics, I’m sorry to say that there is none of that to be found in this game. However, this game does a superb job of channeling the unique style of Penny Arcade into video game form. If you are a fan of Penny Arcade then there is a lot to enjoy, however if you are not you might end up feeling like you didn’t get your moneys worth.

The soul still burns

Soulcalibur IV is the newest game of the perpetually misspelled, weapon based fighting series. The fighting is exactly what you would expect if you have played any other game in the series. It mainly focuses around blocking and parrying different weapons then exploiting your foe in their time of weakness. The wide variety of weapons covers anything from razor sharp katana to obnoxiously large diamond swords. With so many different types of weapons and fighting styles it remains unique from other fighters.

The single player portion of Soulcalibur IV is rather lack luster. The story is a series of five disjointed fights with an underwhelming pre rendered cinematic to cap it all off. You can easily beat this in 15 minutes which makes playing it almost completely pointless. The arcade mode is exactly what you would expect as well, eight fights strung together with no real purpose other than testing your skills. The only interesting mode to be found is Tower of Lost Souls. In this mode, you ascend said evil tower in an attempt to get to the top, fighting random enemies to get there. Alright maybe that’s the same idea as the other two modes. Overall the single player is exactly what you would expect and does nothing new or exciting.

In terms of the rooster, Soulcalibur IV is really strong; the character list is large and diverse. With the large amount of fighters, the fighting styles vary enough that anyone can find a style can suit them. While all of the old favorites, like Mitsurugi and Nightmare, are back and ready to go Soulcalibur IV features Yoda and The Apprentice into the mix. As was the case in Soulcalibur II these guest characters don’t fit very well into the overall continuity of the rooster. Especially Yoda, due to his obvious height issue you can’t hit him with high strikes or throw him. This makes him extremely annoying to face and makes you almost invincible when you play as him. While the new comers are a questionable addition, the most perplexing thing about the rooster is what was done to all of the female characters. Ivy and Taki are the main offenders. There is nothing with putting a sexy lady in your game but Soulcalibur takes the line of decency clubs it over the head and then snaps it in half. We get it women have boobs, get over it.

If you are not satisfied by the present rooster you can create your own from scratch; or you can tweak an existing character. The amount of customizable aspects for your fighters appearance is mind boggling. The sheer amount of items made my head spin when I first looked. All of the equipment you put on have different stats associated with them which would encourage you to pick the best armor but when you do that you end up looking like a complete fool. The game could have done a better job of making different items mesh together. As it is now, you either have to go for a cosmetically pleasing fighter or an idiotic character with the best stats.

Graphically Soulcalibur IV is a feast for your eyes. All of your characters are extremely detailed and animate extremely well. The fluidity of the fighting is plain stunning. The arenas you fight in have had the same attention the fighters had. Your battle grounds range from a pirate ship, arctic tundra, or the deck of the death star. Short of the obnoxious breast graphics, Soulcalibur is the best looking fighter to come out yet.

Online play is a new addition for the Soulcalibur series. I’ve played a decent amount of matches. For the most part the actual fights are lag free. Of course since we are not yet aware of the awesome power of internet 3.0 there is still lag present. You can play strait up verses with the default characters or you can bring your customized online and play as well. Overall is online portion is well executed and as long as the community remains, it’s a worthwhile addition to the series.

Overall Soulcalibur IV is a competent fighter that remains true to what the series has been come to known by. There is nothing remarkable about Soulcalibur IV but then again there is nothing wrong with a polished version of what you already have. If you want a weapon based fighter then there is no better choice then Soulcalibur IV.

Time to answer the call

Call of Duty 4 is breaking new ground for the long running Infinity Ward series. This is the first time Call of Duty 4 has been brought into the modern realm. Infinity Ward’s portrayal on the modern world is refreshing; Even though many games take place in this setting, Call of Duty 4 still remains unique.

The single player portion of the Call of Duty games has always been very directed and cinematic and this game stays true to that tradition. The campaign tracks two separate soldiers as they wage war against none other than Muslim extremists and Russian terrorists. The two ongoing fights offer different game play methods. The British S.A.S focuses more on stealth, and the US Marines focus on going in guns blazing. While the story of most First Person Shooters end with the world saved and everyone living happily ever after, Call of Duty 4 is much darker. The events that go down are way darker and grittier than other shooter story lines. For example at one point you take a first person perspective of a marine slowly dying of radiation poisoning after the mission goes horribly wrong. This also brought something up to me, I cared about the characters. By the end of the story you will form a small liking to those A.I. controlled bullet magnets. That’s what makes the end so bad; I won’t spoil that here. The only problem with the single player is that it is short. On the Recruit and Normal difficulties you can easily beat in four to five hours.  However playing on Veteran difficulty made the one problem with the campaign readily apparent, infinite spawns. If you don’t advance during a fire fight then the enemies will perpetually spawn. This really clashed to my more slow calculated play style and forced me to run right in and fight.

With any First Person Shooter nowadays the main attraction is the multiplayer. Call of Duty 4 adds a few light RPG-esque elements in with the normal shooter game play. Everything you do whether it’s capturing a flag or shooting a person contributes XP to your level. As you gain experience you acquire guns and perks. You slowly build up a nice armory of weapons those suites many different styles of play. Perks are the other important part of Call of Duty 4, these are special abilities that cover a wide range. They can range from simple things like extra ammunition to dropping a live grenade after death. While higher level players do have more access to more weapons and perks, they do not have much of a competitive advantage. Every weapon is extremely deadly and as powerful as any other gun. While the perks seems like a big advantage they just serve as little bonuses that simply flesh out your game play style. At some point you will hit level fifty-five and will hit a tough choice. At fifty five you have the option to enter Prestige Mode. This resets all of your weapons, perks, level, and rank are taken away in favor of a new shiny emblem. You can repeat this up to ten times at which point you have seen basically every time. However this will take so much time and dedication that you are likely to quit playing by then. For a long time I thought that the multi player was very complete with a good variety of modes and options until I played at a friend’s house. We each wanted to play on our own profiles on the same T.V. while playing some online play; That’s apparently impossible. We could not find any way to make this possible. While there may be some way to do it, it certainly says something to how this was not taken into much consideration. That is the one flaw I can see in the multiplayer segment of Call of Duty 4.

Call of Duty 4 is a cinematic single player game as well as a exciting multiplayer that any shooter fan should own.

Bejeweled+Mana

Puzzle Quest is a game that takes the basic mechanics of Bejeweled with elements of an RPG. For example, if you were to match three red gems you get three "Fire" into your mana pool where you cast spells. Aside from the "mana" gems there are skulls. If you match three of these you do damage to your mythical foe.

While the game play is relatively simple you can add alot of depth by using certain spells and power ups in order to make battles exciting. Aside from battling mythical creatures you can do many other things. You can capture mounts, build a castle, research spells, and go on quests to gain items and experience. All of the typical RPG add ons are here so there is more than just puzzle battling.

The only problem with this game is that the computer cheats. While the developer says different I beg to disagree. At certain times the computer will get these random moments of "luck". All of the sudden it will get 4 of a Kinds and 5 of a Kinds, which extend your turn, and then you somehow lose all of your HP and lose.

Aside from that problem, Puzzle Quest is an enjoyable experience that blew my expectations out of the water. There is a surprising amount of depth and addicting game play to boot. Whichever way you can get this game, you should buy it.

Sadly, I cant assassinate the disappointment

In Assassins Creed you play as Altair. You are part of a brotherhood of Assassins that are on a quest to protect the holy land from the invading crusaders. Assassins Creed is a game that will bring you along on a unique adventure unlike any other.

At this point if you have heard of Assassins Creed you know about the "twist". In reality you play Desmond who is a test monkey for some kind of evil cooperation. Extremely early in the game you find out that these mysterious scientists are holding you captive in order to get information on your ancestor, Altair. So therefore you must relive Altair's life in order to obtain the correct "information".

While playing you are thrust into one of three massive cities. Being as Assassin gives you the ability to scale buildings in a fashion that would put Spiderman to shame. Altair will fluidly scale massive towers grabbing rails and scaffolding without any hesitation. This is by far the best part of Assassins Creed; the platforming game play in this game completely elevate the genre and sets a new benchmark that will be tough be match and even harder to surpass.

While the cities themselves are a superb achievement the events going on within the city are rather disappointing. Whenever you go to a new part of the city you must follow a set routine. First you must get to a high point and survey the surrounding area. Secondly you must collect information on your target. In order to get this information you do one of four things. You can eavesdrop on chatty citizens to get the scoop. Pick pocketing an important document is another possible objective, or you can beat the information out of talkative individuals. While these three objectives make sense in terms of collecting information there is another type that make me confused. There are fellow assassins littered throughout the city that want you to complete objectives for them in exchange for information. However these objectives are so dumb; you either have to finish off their assassination duties for them, or collect the flags that they seem to misplace every single time you talk to them. This might not seem like much but I have one question, whats the point of collecting your stupid flags?

Regardless once you're done with those you have to go and assassinate your main target. These also seem to go by some sort of loose routine. You must find your target wade through the crowd of people and go in for the kill. Once everyone notices the corpse on the ground twenty guards show up to brawl. This brings me to my next topic of discussion, the combat. Early off in the game you spend most of the time mashing on the X button until dudes die. Eventually you will build up a repertoire of moves that will make you a very formidable opponent. However there is one move that seems a little overpowered, the counter attack just has you patiently guarding until someone on attacks you and you counter which gives you the one hit kill. Then you can just wait as each guard approaches you in an orderly fashion each eagerly awaiting their turn to review a good slash to the face.

While this is fun and exciting the first time around, you soon realize that this cycle will repeat a total of eleven times. Around the third time the cycle starts to become extremely tiresome. This is the major thing about Assassins Creed. Your tolerance to repeat this cycle will determine the amount of enjoyment that you will be able to get out of Assassins Creed. For most people I would recommend you borrow or rent this game first. Assassins Creed is not a game that is necessarily worth the sixty dollar price. In the end the amount of time you can stay immersed in the world will dictate how far you will go with this game. Whether or not you get to the end, everyone should at least experience this game.
