I suck at CoD as well but I still find it incredibly addictive and fun. I didn't call in a chopper until I was like a rank 25 or something absurd like that. Just try to build the perfect classes and go for challenges with every weapon to get yourself well-rounded with them. You'll get better at the game AND you'll rank up faster.

I remember back in '06 when I'd look forward every Tuesday to listening to the Hotspot. Jeff, Ryan, Alex, Brad, Vinny and the rest of them made that an amazing podcast (it was fucking hilarious too).  These days the Hotspot is full of lifeless personalities (with exception given to Tor Thorsen, the guy tries but he should just move on, he's better than that site now) which is why I just stopped listening altogether. This post relates to: Rock Band 2, Gears of War 2, Call of Duty: World at War, Xbox Live

This might be my own personal problem, but for whatever reason Xbox Live is completely dead right now. I can't connect and neither can my friends, hell I can't even get onto Xbox.com. I'm not really gunna bitch about this but it's starting to get a bit out of hand, I mean is this gunna be a yearly thing? Every time the holiday season rolls around the service shits its pants! I remember last year during Christmas Break when I got the Red RIng AND Xbox Live was dead for an entire week!

I understand that every online services will run into technical difficulties every now and again, but not being able to play something I put $50 a year into during the most critical season in the gaming world is frustrating to say the least. I almost got to rank 41 in World at War too! Of course, this whole thing could be over in an instant, so if you can connect, you can pretty much disregard this portion of the post.

I figure since this I haven't really done a good blog in a while I'll do one now. I've been playing the hell out of Call of Duty: World at War and Gears 2 with the occassional game of Rock Band 2 thrown into the mix. Since Gears 2 just got patched it's become much easier to find ranked matches for four player parties, something my friends and I have been clamoring for since the game's initial launch. I still need to complete the game on insane, and I could at any moment because I have more than a few friends who have yet to beat it as well, but I just have no motivation to do so. I installed Gears 2 (I had to exchange a copy because my 360 scratched mine, so I figured if it can't spin the disc then it won't scratch it!) and it does nothing for the load times but at least the 360 runs quietly now. I need a new hard drive, because 650 megs isn't gunna last me too long.

Call of Duty WaW is still fiendishly addictive, and I'm a rank 40 now. Pretty good considering that before Thanksgiving break I was a 28. I've been using every weapon I've unlocked thus far and have the marksman challenges done for a good 80% of them. I finished up the remainder of my unlocked rifles (there are two more I have to unlock) today. Bolt-action rifles are so damn hard to get kills with, due to the slow rate of fire and the fact that 90% of the community uses juggernaut, but hey, it's no different than me using stopping power.

If I could remove one thing from that game though it'd have to be the tanks. I use bouncing betty's as my first perk because they make sniping a lot easier, but when you're trying to get to a good spot and you're faced with a tank, what are you to do? It's not like you can throw down a betty and hope to kill it! They always feel really cheap and make some matches just plain not fun. Good thing there are only three maps that support them.

I got all of my Christmas shopping done on Black Friday. I burned through about $130, which sounds expensive, but really isn't too bad since most of the stuff I bought was $30 dollars less than it would cost normally. My uncle bought me Chinese Democracy, the new Guns N' Roses album, along with Left 4 Dead as my gift. I plan on saving all of my money up until after Christmas and then splurging on stuff I've needed for a while now. Among these are a new hard drive, a wireless adapter, and all the games I missed out on this holiday season. Depending on which games I get for Christmas will determine my game purchases afterward.

That about does it for me, I hope you all had a great thanksgiving. Thanks for reading.

This week the gaming and the music world saw and heard three things they never thought they'd ever hear.

1.) Chinese Democracy: 14 fucking years we've been waiting for Axl Rose to release his latest work upon the masses, and from the 5 songs I've listened to so far, it's much better than expected. Definetly check it out if you're a GNR fan. The abscence of Slash and Duff and the rest of the original gang is somewhat painful, but once you get past that you find some genuinely good stuff here.
2.) GTA IV DLC Gets a Release Date!!!: It figures that less than a week after I trade in GTA IV they confirm everything for the DLC. Looks like I'll be buying it up again....damn you Rockstar!!! But in all seriousness, this is pretty damn awesome considering that it'll flesh out the main story. Hopefully they add some extra achievements....
3.) Duke Nukem Forever Screens: Duke Nukem 3-D was released on XBLA a few weeks back, and if you beat the game on the hardest dificulty, you unlock two screen shots from the urban legend Duke Nukem Forever. Ah, who the hell am I kidding.....nobody cares about that game anymore.

This post relates to: Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, Battletoads

So, a friend of mine who works at Gamestop recently got a call from someone. The call went a little something like this:

Customer: Hi I recently purchased a copy of Halo 3 from you guys, but there was a slight problmem....
Employee: What was the problem sir?
C: Well, when I opened it I got another game instead....
E: What game was it?
C: It was Battletoads for the NES!
E: Hangs up.

Then I found this call over the internet that made me cry laughing:

I'll be recording my own this weekend, there are three gamestops in my town, one of which is just flat out terrible for customer service....guess which one I'm calling?

BULLET BLOG!!!! TAKE COVER!!!!!

  • I've been playing the hell out of World at War, and am on the level entitled "Heart of the Reich". Apparently it's the second to last mission in the game....I might give it a go on veteran or hardened after this.
  • Last I checked Gears 2 matchmaking is still being a piece, not really excited about that game anymore, what a downer....
  • Saw Quantum of Solace along with the rest of the world over the weekend, hadn't seen Casino Royale. I thought I'd be lost but since there was 0 plot whatsoever I got a bit of a clue of what was going on. I'll have to rent CR sometime. Overall a good Bond film, and this is coming from a guy who usually doesn't care.
  • Traded in GTA IV, Mercs 2, RSV2, and Rock Band 1 Sunday. If I have to wait this long for DLC, then fuck it, I don't care anymore.
  • While battling for Okinawa I smashed my front screen on my cell phone with my 360 controller......yeah.....
  • I wonder what the two 0 point achievements in CoD WaW are?
  • I fear that with CoD in my 360 I will never beat Gears 2 on insane.
  • You were killed by a grenade. Watch out for the grenade danger indicator.
  • The NXE is imminent, got the message from Live today. Oh well, at least it'll have 8 person chat.....a feature I've been begging for for the last two years.
  • I've realized what a waste of $100 GH: WT was.
  • I've realized what an amazing set list RB2 has.
  • Jeff's review of MKVSDC seemed more than favorable for the game. I suck at fighters though, so I'll probably give it a rental....or risk another cell phone.
  • Kiefer Sutherland has some of the most unintentionally funny lines of any actor ever. Period.
    • THEY'RE SINKING CITIES WITH A GIANT WORM!!!

That's about all that's going on with me lately......Now to stare with woe at my phone.....

This post relates to: Call of Duty: World at War

Sorry about the shitty pun. I had to do it.

Anyways, last weekend when I bought Gears 2 I thought "Hey, this'll be all I need before Christmas, right?". Well, the game's matchmaking thought differently and still doesn't work. Even with my NAT settings opened up I can't join any matchmade games without a 20 minute wait time.

That's where Call of Duty: WaW comes in.

Like the rest of you I loved CoD4. Great stuff. After trying the beta I see the potential the game has online and from the reviews it seems like it's got a hell of  a campaign as well. Hell, I think I can go one more go-around in World War II, especially after watching the Valkyrie trailer. There's one catch to this whole thing though. My parents don't want me spending money on games every week. Sooooo, I've reffered to the massive stack of games I have on my beareau to see which ones I'll obviously never play again. You see, Gamestop has a promotion going on where if you trade in 2 select games, you get CoD for $19.99. Not too shabby! Here is a list of the games I'll be trading in plus my rationale for it:

  • GTA IV: One of the games on the list that'll bring CoD down to $19.99. I have 805 points out of the game, and it looks like the DLC won't be here for a long ass time. I've completed the game 100% and have basically done all I can do in the game. Multiplayer is a hassle too.
  • Mercenaries 2: I've done all I can do in one playthrough of this one, and it was fun while it lasted. Laying waste to everything around you is always fun, but not for too long. The other game in the promotion.
  • Rock Band 1: I've imported all of my songs into RB2 so there's no point of this game even being on the shelf.
  • Rainbow Six Vegas 2: Nobody plays TDM in this game anymore, none of my friends play it period, and I haven't touched it in months.

There you have it, I don't think I'll terribly miss any of these games. The Mercs 2 DLC seemed promising but there's just so many other, better games coming out that I'd probably never get to it anyways. Did I mention that the original is $30 used?! Weird.

I made this blog originally as a "Should I get it?" type thing, but now I really want it. Post your thoughts on it if you would, pl0x.

Mercenaries 2 is Great Fun, but full of Game-killing bugs.

Most people who will buy and have bought Mercenaries 2: World in Flames either A.) Played the original or B.) Love to watch shit get blown up. If you fit neither of these demographics, I can almost assure you that you will hate this game, and you need not read further. However, if you are in one of or both of those groups, you will more than likely really dig this game.

Basically when it all comes down to it, Mercenaries 2 is about capturing outposts for various factions. These factions include a band of Venezuelan rebels, China, the Allied Nations (USA), and even some pirates. You can choose one of three characters, all of which make a mild difference to the experience. Chris Jacobs, the African American mercenary, can carry much more ammo for his weapons than the other two characters. Matias Nilson, the Swedish merc, can regenerate health faster than the other characters, and then there's Jennifer Mui. Jennifer can walk and run faster than the other mercs. Some of the dialogue is different between the characters, but these differences are few and far between. You can pretty much safely play the game with whoever you like best, without worrying about their various advantages.

While capturing outposts for factions seems tedious and repetitive, and was one of the first game's major flaws, the missions have an addictive quality to them. Most of this is due to the graphical prowess of the Xbox 360, and the massive environments able to be created. No more are the repetitive environments from the first game, they've been replaced by the lush and tropical Venezuela, and what a huge country it is. What else makes these missions continously fresh is the prospect of new weapons. The airstrikes in Mercenaries 2 are astounding, and the destructibility of the environments is cause for endless mischief.

The only gripe with these graphics and immense playing space (there are no load times going from area to area, only between conversations and entering faction outposts) is the insane amount of pop-up you get. If you're taking a helicopter, you can see the area load before you, and it's a bit frustrating sometimes, especially when you see an anti-aircraft gun appear when it's too late to dodge.

The enemy AI in Mercenaries 2 is pretty bad. The developers seem keen on the "Quantity over quality" approach and just throw a bunch of stupid enemies at you and give them rocket launchers. This makes some missions hard, but for the wrong reasons. The bad AI is one of the glaring problems with this game. A great example of this is when one goes to hijack an enemy car with a mounted gun on the back. When you jump into the driver's seat, the gunner just gets out and lets you have the car. He doesn't shoot you or anything, and in the unlikely event that he does, you can make a quick getaway in the car.

One of the strategic angles of the original Mercenaries games was choosing your missions for different factions wisely. If you do a mission for one faction, you risk making another one mad. The same system applies for Mercs 2, minus the strategy. One simply bribes the faction with cash and presto, all is forgiven. While this makes the game easier, it draws from what made the first one so good.

Mercenaries 2 also offers co-op play, via Xbox Live. The trouble with this is that it's nearly broken. I was able to join a friend's game instantly, but whenever I would select "search" from the xbox live menu, I would get the sound, but no search would begin. This was the same for both quick and custom match. It's one of the more irritating bugs this game has.

Speaking of bugs, a lot of the achievements in the 360 version of the game are glitched too. I did the required actions for three of these and recieved no points. Let's hope we get a patch out there soon.

When it all comes down to it Mercs 2 is a fun game that has a few serious bugs and glitches. Had the game shipped bug-free it probably would've gotten a much higher score from me. The bonus missions and immense supply of weapons are sure to give this game replayability, and if you liked the first one you're probably going to have fun with this one, but some of the flaws with it are simply impossible to ignore.

Aerosmith Fan or Not, This is a Solid Title

In the summer of 2007 Activision released the Harmonix-created Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80's. The game had a solid but extremely short tracklist and very little in the way of change to the Guitar Hero 2 formula. To top it all off, it was fifty bucks! The game was seen as a cash in but saved mainly due to its solid setlist.

Nearly a year after Rocks the 80's we're faced with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith which covers mostly Aerosmith while also including songs from bands that played with or "inspired" them. The game is full retail price at sixty dollars for the 360 version but it's got a lot more to it than Rocks the 80's did. The first noticable changes in the game are the new menus. They're basically Guitar Hero 3 menus but with an Aerosmith coat of paint. It adds a bit of novelty to the experience and helps it to separate itself from being Guitar Hero 3 with different songs. The game's in-game store is called "The Vault" and is home to the game's host of unlockable items. The entire monster set of guitars from Guitar Hero 3 is back in full force along with a ton of new Aerosmith guitars and basses. There's also new outfits, songs, characters, finishes, and even a few "Behind the Music-esque" videos for your viewing pleasure. The trouble with all this is that it'll take you playing the setlist over and over, even creating different bands just to afford all the unlockables. This will be agitating to many, especially expert players who find themselves playing the expert career three or even four times just to get the cash to buy all of the guitars.

Speaking of the setlist, Guitar Hero Aerosmith has some great songs in it. The songs spread from the 70's through the early 90's, the youngest of which being Sex Type Thing by Stone Temple Pilots. If you're a classic rock fan chances are you'll fall in love with most of this list pretty quickly. The solos in the songs are genuinely fun to play, and you'll soon forget how long they go on for. The difficulty of said solos has been scaled down quite a bit, but the timing window for hitting notes has been fine tuned for a more Guitar Hero II style feel. This balances the difficulty out for the most part, but experiened players will blow through the game with very little trouble. The achievements for beating each difficulty are stacked, in other words if you beat expert you'll get the achievements for beating easy, medium, and hard as well as the expert one.

The unlockable songs in the game are all-around pretty good. That is, with the exception of the Joe Perry solo work. The songs "Mercy" and "Joe Perry Guitar Battle" are the only good songs out of Perry's solo work for the reason that they don't have lyrics to them and are really fun to play. His other songs, not so much. The game includes both versions of the hit "Walk this Way" which was a very nice touch. Run DMC even makes it in as an unlockable character, though we didn't know he could play guitar.

You can blow through the single player career in a little under four hours if you're familiar with the concept. The venues are all original and the motion captured Aerosmith members are overall well done. My only complaint was the lack of songs when you're done with it all. 41 songs isn't a bad amount but there are some glaring omissions from the setlist that could've made this better.

The Battle, Co-op, Face-off, and Pro Face-Off modes all make a return to the game, with of course online play over Xbox Live. Some of the songs (Back in the Saddle comes to mind) are really fun to play in co-op because both the bass and lead tracks are really fun. Other songs don't fare so well and the bass/rythm guitarist gets the short straw. What's surprising about the Battle and Face-Off modes is that now they're played on one difficulty over Xbox Live. This delivers a much better balance in multiplayer matches (in Guitar Hero 3, Xbox Live Battles primarily consisted of two players waiting for the other to pick a difficulty so the other could pick a lower difficulty) and makes them a lot more fun. Face-off still feels unbalanced by design, but that's what Pro Face-Off is for. If you want to play locally, then you can adjust the difficulty in Battle, Face-off, and even in Pro Face-Off, which was previously unavailable in past Guitar Hero games.

Finally, there are the game's achievements. They are much easier than the Guitar Hero III achievements but I feel that this is their main flaw. Achievements are a great source of replay value for a game when it starts to get boring and Guitar Hero III's achievements had you playing for months to unlock many of the more difficult ones. It's possible to get nearly 200 Gamerscore just by playing and 100%'ing the first or any song in the game as long as it's above the easy difficulty. There are a few difficult achievements such as getting 325,000 points or more on Train Kept a Rollin' but these are few and far between. You'll find yourself with nearly all of the achievements after a first play through.

If you're a long time fan of the Guitar Hero franchise then there's really no big detering factor that should stop you from liking this game. Newcomers should be more cautious when approaching this game unless they really really like Aerosmith. If you're like me and just love the series then  don't be afraid to walk this way (sorry, terrible pun).

I'm too preoccupied with Rock Band to pick up GH:WT, but yeah, the open strum on bass seems like a really innovative and significant feature, as opposed to the weird new sustains on guitar charts which I'd say just add clutter as opposed to a real challenge. I wouldn't be surprised if guitar also adopts the open strum in the next installment. Glad you enjoyed the game somewhat.

Yea, i don't mind making games dedicated to bands along as if there was enough content. I think GH: Aerosmith was a great game for there fans and heck even me and I never really heard them before that game. As long as the content justifies the price, then I could care less. This game though seemed like just an easy cash in.

Well if you like AC/DC then get it. All it is is a stripped down version of RockBand 1. No character creator, but all the other features. So its a setlist of 18 you work your way through and its just random characters. 40 bucks for 18 songs and 200 achievement points. However, you get acode to enter in the dashboard that lets you download all the songs to be played in Rockband 1 or 2. Its worth it...but should have just been DLC.
