Graphics Don't Mean Everything (Naruto UNS Impressions)

Fallout 3 and Gears of War 2 Impressions
o I've been playing Fallout 3 (360) last week. I also received Gears of War 2 (360) on Saturday so I decided to do a mega-marathon with it. So I played around 3-4 hours of Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm (PS3) and I can honestly say that it's inferior to Ubisoft's Naruto: Rise of a Ninja for the 360. Aside from the gorgeous graphics and slightly better fighting engine, the rest of the game's adventure mode has been utterly disappointing.

The missions are a bunch of disjointed challenges that don't really add anything to the story for people who don't follow the manga/anime. It's either a fight or some minor fetch quest. And some of the fights don't make sense in the context of the non-existent narrative. On the other hand, Ubisoft's game had a cohesive narrative and they even created new scenarios to try and have it make some sense. Why didn't the devs come up with something like that? It's like the devs didn't know what to do with this open-world that they created (or copied). Speaking of copied, one mission struck me as a direct rip-off. The Hide and Seek missions with the lil kid was done the exact same way as the Ubisoft version (and it was still worse).

And what's up with the loading? It is absolutely atrocious! Even with a 4GB mandatory install, we still have a pretty long loading screen every time you go back into the open-world or start a battle. Considering how BARREN the world is, it's inexcusable. And speaking of barren, Konoha looks like a ghost town. The pedestrians are few and far between and the devs didn't even include any ambient sounds for the world. You don't hear ANYONE say anything at all. No crowd noises or even a hint of someone chatting nearby. Is everyone mute or is Naruto deaf? It's just lame because Ubisoft's game not only had a bustling town but they also included a wealth of crowd noises and people reacting to your presence as you run by. I'm not sure how CyberConnect2 can mess this up so bad. Btw, I played with the Japanese track for both games.

I also want to mention the music. From what I played so far, it sounds like original tracks made just for the game. I was kinda disappointed because Ubisoft had used pretty much every single track from the anime in their game and it made the game feel like the series. Without the anime music, this version of the game felt different and didn't really make me feel like I was doing stuff in the Naruto world. It's sorta like playing a Simpsons game without the Simpsons theme being included...

Like I said, this game is beautiful but the gameplay is just shallow compared to Rise of a Ninja. I enjoyed some of Ultimate Ninja Storm's racing minigames but it just wasn't enough. For Naruto fans who want a true GTA-type version of the game with plenty of fun sidequests to do, I highly recommend checking out the Ubisoft version on the 360. You should probably only get this version for the fighting engine cuz it's the only part of the game I find enjoyable at this moment. If it gets better later, let me know...

This was an amazing game with a lot of great moments. It was a lot of fun to play through and the story was great. The set pieces and vehicle sections were awesome to play through and was incredibly exhilarating. I won't spoil it for you guys but there were plenty of MGS4-type climatic moments in the game. Epic really did their homework and made the game feel like a big blockbuster movie without sacrificing the gameplay.

Some of the boss battles were kickass as well. There's a new guy and he's way more badass than RAAM was. The battle with him was really challenging and epic. I wasn't a fan of some choke points in the game but I'd expect that it would've been much easier in co-op with a good player.

Anyways, the overall game is one long cohesive journey and it was quite fun. All the new weapons rock and the levels were well designed. Gears 2 is a great game and I will be playing multi very soon and enjoy it even more. Like I said, this is a must have. If you enjoyed Gears 1 even a little, this is a no-brainer purchase.

So I've been playing Fallout 3 (360) last week. I also received Gears of War 2 (360) on Saturday so I decided to do a mega-marathon with it. I didn't finish either one because I was busy but I managed to make some major progress with both.

For Fallout 3, it's definitely Oblivion with guns and mutants. That's not a bad thing because I loved Oblivion. I've never played the previous Fallout games (but I watched the GT Retrospective) so I wasn't too familiar with the world or the various terms they use. The opening tutorial prologue was well done but I felt it was rushed and didn't go into the nuances of what you could do in the main game. I think Bethesda should've added a few more sections so I was more comfortable with the various Pipboy functions. I simply pressed various buttons just to see what they would do. I don't read manuals anymore but I think I should cuz I accidentally found the flashlight button in the game on my own.

Anyways, the game is beautiful in a weird wasteland-y barren way. Everything is crisp and the lighting is nice. The various locations are full of detail and junk so it actually looks like people are living it in. The character faces are a huge improvement over Oblivion. Not only do they look better but they're way more detailed. Btw, there are actually attractive female faces in the game so kudos to Bethesda for fixing that ugly-face problem in their engine. But the game has plenty of the same problems that Oblivion had. Characters and enemies move stiffly and there's plenty of fade-in and texture pop-in when you're in the open world sections. I also found that my character isn't quite as detailed as I like. But when you're entering or exiting buildings, the loading is quite fast. And if there's a major load, at least we get to see a nice lil slideshow-style presentation.

The gameplay is the same as Oblivion except you got guns and the VAT system. It's fun to run around and chat with the various characters you meet. I prefer that aspect of the game over shooting guys though. I know this is a RPG but I'm not a fan of the somewhat inaccurate FPS mechanics. The VAT system makes it fun but you really need to level up significantly to have any fun with it since you might miss anyways. My biggest complaint is not the actual game but the menu UI. I hate that the menu is entirely devoted to the Pipboy screen. Not only is the screen hard to see cuz it's monochromatic, but it doesn't even take up the full screen. I'm not sure why Bethesda didn't give us an option to zoom into full screen cuz the game freezes anyways when you're fiddling with it. I'm sure people might feel more immersed with it hanging on your arm but it's not practical at all. Checking the maps and notes you find is a real pain unless you're playing on a PC monitor or sitting close to your TV. If there was a patch to zoom in full screen for the menu I would be happy. I also hate that you don't get to see your character in full 3D like you can in Oblivion. There's no way to see what you're character looks from the front except during various VAT sequences.

The game's story is okay so far but since I only completed like 10 quests so far so it's hard for me to judge it. The game is still very addictive and very enjoyable. There are problems but it's definitely fun and worth playing.

For Gears of War 2, it's been a blast. I've been playing the Solo in Hardcore cuz I wanna enjoy the story on my own. I'm in the last chapter but I had to take a break since my eyes needed a rest. This game is surprisingly beefy compared to the first game which is pretty short in comparison. If you loved the first game, the second one is even better. Not only is everything "bigger, better and more badass". But Epic has done an outstanding job improving the everything we loved about the first game.   Graphics are as beautiful as ever. It's basically Gears 1 with color and improved textures. The character designs are improved and animate a bit more fluidly. But I think Epic needs to work on the female faces since they're so bland and simple compared to the dudes. The world is very detailed and all the various settings and locale are diverse. There are some interesting locations which will surprise you.

I also gotta mention the story (yes, it has one!). Unlike the first game which was basically a plot with no major story, Gears 2 HAS a story. The cutscenes are fleshed out and well directed. Not only do you learn more about your characters and the world they're in, but there are some genuinely emotional parts to the game. I won't spoil it for you guys but there was one cutscene which moved me and was a definite revelation. That wasn't something I expected from this game. I also love the additional humor and dialogue during the in-game segments. It really added a lot to the story and you feel like you're on a long adventure rather than a simple mission. You definitely feel like you're in a major war in this game.

Btw, the game's levels are awesome. Every chapter has you doing something new. You get to kill plenty of Locusts (as usual) but you also get to do it in so many different ways. It definitely keeps the game fresh and extremely fun. There's even one chapter where it feels like you're in an obstacle course instead of a shooter. It was a very nice break after a major battle. The pacing for the levels are well done and going from epic firefights to some quiet exploration is evenly distributed. It's way better than the first game. The game's difficulty is challenging and there are some choke points which required plenty of retries but the overall game felt fair and was never punishing. Some boss fights required trial and error to beat but I figured them out without a guide which was cool. I do have to mention that I encountered two bugs/glitches with the game. They were resolved when I reloaded a checkpoint and only happened once but it was bit odd to see for a title like this.

I also have to commend Epic for making my AI allies useful. Unlike the first game, my guys rarely need me to revive them and they can kill a lot of guys on their own. Like I said, I'm playing in Hardcore and my guys ain't pushovers like they were in the first game. I also love that I sometimes have 3-4 other guys with me cuz it really made me feel like I'm in a squad. It's a huge improvement over the first game where you felt isolated most of the time.

Anyways, I'm loving it and I can't wait to beat the Solo mode and join in some Co-op on Insane once I unlock it. I'm also looking forward to playing Horde mode cuz it seems like everyone loves it. Gears 2 definitely lives up to the hype. Must buy.

Spoiler-free as usual.

I completed Fable II (360) over the weekend after a mega marathon. This game is friggin addictive! It's tons better than the first game and really fun. I couldn't stop playing it cuz there are soooo many sidequests. I didn't even complete them all when I finished the main quest.

The graphics are uber gorgeous. While the character models could've been more detailed, the world looks amazing. I was especially impressed by the art direction and lighting. I found myself sometimes stopping to stare at the beautiful locations. The colors really pop and the world is just full of life with swaying trees and little critters moving around. Even the caves look really nice and colorful. Whether it's day or night, the world looks fantastic. I only had a few minutes of slowdown and there's some fade-in but it's not too bad.

The audio is wonderful. The music is excellent and does a great job at creating the fantasy feel of the game. It's all very subtle and never overwhelming. I gotta say that there were a few tracks that reminded me of the music from the XBLA game, Braid. It's definitely a great soundtrack. The voice acting is just as good. Every single character is perfect. The main characters are particularly awesome and really do a great job with all their various emotions. The humor was great and the delivery of the jokes are spot on. Good stuff.

The gameplay is your usual RPG fare but the combat system is what I wanted to talk about. It's extremely simple and incredibly fun. The melee, range and magic attacks are all mapped to one button for each move. The ability to switch from one to another on the fly made every battle enjoyable. There wasn't one time where I was bored or tired of the combat. It's just plain fun and I hope other action RPGs will take a look at this. And just like Dead Space, the game allows you to find your objectives quite easily with a glowing trail. Very smart. FYI, you can turn it off if you don't want a guide which is a nice option.

One of the best features is your dog companion. This dog is great and might be on par with other great video game animal companions like the horse in Shadow of the Colossus. You really get attached to him and he's actually very useful. He'll look for treasures for you and help you in combat if you train him enough. But the best part is that he'll keep you entertained when you're running around all alone during some quests. I have a dog and I can say that Lionhead did a magnificent job capturing the behaviors of what dogs do in real life. He is incredibly life-like and is animated really well. Well done.

While the main quest's story was good, the sidequests are pretty interesting in their own right. They're a real joy to play through. They're not simple little jobs (which you can do on the side for the Jobs section) but there are a ton of sidequests which really are quests! They're pretty massive and some of them took a lot of time to complete. Some sidequests even have multiple parts which will have you going to various secret locations you wouldn't have found if you skipped them. I didn't finish or try some of them cuz they would obviously change my character's alignment but I will definitely check them out when I replay the game. This is one of the more addictive parts of the games.

But not everything was perfect. The menu interface is really annoying. Example: Whenever you use a potion in the menu screen you get dumped back into the game instead of staying in the menu screen. If you plan on using a bunch of potions like the EXP ones then you're gonna have to jump into the menu and look for the Potions tab over and over again which is just silly. The same thing applies to the Food tab as well. Ugh. I'm also not a fan of the whole Expressions function. It's kinda lame and not that deep. And once you're married, maintaining a relationship is a real pain in the butt. I won't hold much against the relationships aspect of the game since it's optional but the clunky menu interface kept me from enjoying the game as much as I can. Maybe the Dead Space devs could meet up with Molyneux and work something out.

Overall, Fable 2 was a real surprise. I knew it would be good but I didn't know it would be THIS good. I wasn't a fan of the first game like most people who played it. Fable 2 definitely improves on a lot of things and really made the game easy to play. The story is good, the combat system is stellar and all the various activities are incredibly addictive. This is a must buy for action-RPG fans. Btw, the British humor is just brilliant. ^_^

Incredibly immersive and ultra polished.

WOW, what an amazing game! This is definitely one of the best games out there. I'm not a fan of many horror games but Dead Space's presentation and gameplay made me love it just as much as other horror games like Resident Evil 4 and Bioshock.

The first thing that instantly grabbed me were the beautiful graphics and in-game HUD. The game looks terrific and it's filled with lots of detail. The ship's levels are eerie and dark in some spots and bright and colorful in other spots. You can sense the horror of what happened to the people on board from the bloody broken locations. The enemies also look totally gruesome and creepy but they're not quite as memorable or disturbing as enemies from games like Silent Hill. As for our hero, Isaac's armor looks totally kickass and he animates very realistically. I was also quite impressed with the famed in-game HUD. It is absolutely SEAMLESS. Everything works really well and it looks great in action. The video logs and menu system is projected in the air in front of you which is quite refreshing to look at. My only gripe is that the text for the text logs look a bit small and hard to read sometimes. Anyways, the in-game HUD is one of the most innovative features of the game and it's extremely well done. Hell, even the loading screen will keep you immersed. Beautiful game.

Even though the graphics look great, the audio is the big winner here. The voice acting is superb, the ambient noises are extremely chilling and the music has its creepy moments. The audio is definitely what scared me the most out of this game. The combination of the monster screams and jolt of music during those sudden confrontations was what had me jumping up. Some reviewers said the game wasn't scary to them but I totally disgree. I think they didn't play with the sound up because if they did, this game was totally immersive and scary as hell. It's quite similar to playing Bioshock where the visuals don't scare you quite as much as the audio. The voice actors for every character you meet is excellent and all the various audio and video logs are also really well done. There isn't a single weak link in the entire game. So pump up your volume if you want the full experience. If you have a good surround setup, that's just icing on the cake.

The gameplay is superb. The controls are super smooth and feel absolutely perfect. Everything from aiming to moving felt responsive. Reloading your weapons is quick and navigating the menus is easy and simple. Every single weapon is powerful and fun to use. Deciding on which weapons to use is a personal preference since every weapon is extremely effective against all the monsters in the game. The alternate fire mode is also pretty cool like the kickass rotating turret on the Pulse Rifle. The ability to check your objective destinations with a click of a button made the game super easy to navigate so you'll never get lost. That made me instantly enjoy exploring the ship because I can always check where I'm supposed to go anytime I want. Sweet. The Stasis and Kinesis powers were also implemented well in both battle and puzzles. They were fun to use as well. I also enjoyed the various Zero-G sections which added some variety to the experience. Btw, Gametrailers mentioned that there are no hotkeys and they are WRONG! There's a dedicated button for Health items which helped a lot in certain battles. I guess their reviewer forgot to read the tutorial? I also like that the game is split up into chapters. Each chapter is about 1-2 hours each depending on how quickly you want to get through each level. This structure made the game easy to digest in chunks but the inability to return to previous sections of the ship was a bummer. Anyways, this game plays like a dream.

Finally, the story. Good story with a few twists and revelations. It won't win any awards but it's very well presented. The majority of the game is spent understanding what happened to the Ishimura (similar to Rapture's downfall in Bioshock). It's nothing that will stick with you but I gotta say that the ending is still floating around in my head. It was quite haunting. I'm really glad I got the LE bundle because it came with the DVD and graphic novel so I'll be digging into those to understand the story more. EA has definitely created a very interesting world that needs to be explored more.

Overall, Dead Space is an excellent game. It's awesome from the beginning to the end. I didn't experience any frustration with the gameplay or exploration at all. The entire experience was seamless. The story was good, the graphics and audio were superb and this game just felt great to play. I loved it all. They got a winner here. This is a MUST BUY folks!

Fantastic!

Prince of Persia: SoT was excellent from beginning to end. It's highly immersive with some excellent puzzles and platforming. The level design is extremely logical and fun to solve. The levels are challenging but it's not impossible like most other games of this type. I was able to beat it without a faq so that shows that anybody can figure out this game. The difficulty isn't high and the game is very forgiving. The save points are numerous enough that you won't be frustrated if you die and the unlimited retries makes the game easy to enjoy. The enemies were a bit tough and the battle system wasn't perfect but it's a minor complaint.

The graphics are lush and vibrant. The lighting effects are amazingly well done. The soft glow and various tones really heighten the mood and is just plain gorgeous to look at. The 3D models themselves aren't as detailed as other games but you won't notice it. The seamless transition from level to level is great. Very immersive because of this. The animations for the Prince is incredibly smooth. The enemies and other characters are pretty decent but the Prince is the star. Great acrobatic animations.

The sound and music is excellent too. The music is sparse but there's enough. It sounds great with the Indian-Middle Eastern-Rock style. But most of the time, you'll be listening to nothing but the ambient sounds of the environment. It sounds very good with the wind and water and other little various details. Very well executed. It's not everyday you find a game without background music interesting to listen to. This game managed to do it. The voice acting is top notch. Everyone is well cast and you'll grow to enjoy the banter between the Prince and the Princess. There's some humorous stuff that'll make you chuckle. They keep the game's story from getting too dull or serious. Good stuff.

The story is very good too. It's very satisfying once you reach the end. But I bet there are some, like me, who want to know more about the characters in the end. It left me wanting a whole lot more. A double-edged sword in some respects. But at least we have a sequel to look forward to. ^^ Btw, they managed to develop the characters quite well. There's not a lot of actual story but there's enough for this type of game.

Overall, it's an excellent game. Great levels/puzzles, characters and story. I beat it in just over 10 hours but it didn't feel short at all which I thought was interesting. Even though it's a relatively short game, it was very good nonetheless. Go check it out!

A truly fun and exciting experience.

First, let me tell you that I'm NOT a Resident Evil fan. I bought the original RE game way back when it first came out due to the word of mouth. The game frightened me a lot when I played it as a kid but I felt disappointed by the lanky controls and horrible item/save features. I never played any of the later RE games because I didn't have a good experience with the original. Now here comes Resident Evil 4, the game that turned me back into a fan.

I was utterly impressed by the quality and scope of this game. It basically killed off everything I hated about the previous RE games. This is definitely not the same RE game of the past. The character controls like a third-person shooter with the camera over his shoulder. Leon moves around very easily. The world is entirely made in 3D which is a welcome change. They also made aiming a snap with the Right Shoulder button and laser add-on. You should have no problems killing things in this game. One negative is that Leon can't move while he shoots. It's makes the game more challenging than it should be. If Capcom allowed Leon to walk backwards while shooting or allowed him to strafe then it would've made the game more fun. I guess Capcom wanted to keep some of the classic movements in this version. I also love the surprising button presses to get through this game. They add a lot of strategy to the game and allow you to do a lot of actions very easily. They tend to pop up in a variety of moments so it'll keep you on your toes.

Capcom also took out the limited saves feature which I sooooo hated in the previous RE games. You can basically save as many times as you want. Even if you forgot to save, every door that loads into a new section of the map is a checkpoint. You can go in and out of a room and it'll act as a save unless you turn off or reset the game. This is a true blessing since this game is so hard on your first playthrough. The items are much easier to handle even though you are regulated to a limited amount of storage space. It's good that you can upgrade the space but I found it to be a bit too limiting. Some players might find it fun to strategize what weapons/items you should keep but others who want to collect all the guns will absolutely hate this feature. I found it annoying. Another somewhat annoying feature is switching guns. If you want to switch weapons then you'l have to go into the menu which is quite cumbersome. I would've wanted a way to switch weapons on the fly. Oh well. You can also do a bunch of other stuff like buying gun upgrades, weapon/item accessories and also sell treasure. It adds a bit of RPG into the mix. Nice feature.

One odd thing in the gameplay is the lack of rumble (controller vibrations) in the game. It's all very minimal and you'll hardly feel it. I felt a little disappointed by it since there were plenty of moments in the game where they could've taken advantage of it. The rumble feature is sorely lacking in this game. Pity.

The graphics are absolutely amazing. The character models are some of the most detailed I'd ever seen on a home console. Their lips move perfectly with the voice actors and the little details in their weapons, items and other accessories move with true realism. The particle effects and textures are truly beautiful. Capcom really put a huge amount of work to make everything look real and act real. But really, the character models are just breathtaking to watch (even in close-ups!). And the bosses in this game are just absolutely amazing to see. The lighting is also very beautiful. But there are minor problems. Some items look blurry up close and most don't break, there are many points in the game where you see objects clipping against other objects, etc. It's not perfect but the graphics are so impressive, you'll ignore some of the minor flaws. Gorgeous game, period.

The sound is also excellent. The sounds of the voices and weapons/explosions/items are great. The voice actors are surprisingly good. I'm glad since many of the previous RE games had horrible voice acting. RE4 redeems itself with a cast of impressive voice actors. One odd thing is the lack of subtitles. You'd think they would have that option for people who wanted to read what people were saying, weird. The music is creepy but minimal. Another nice effect are the ambient sounds all around you when you're just moving around. The birds in the forest, the water and echoes in the caves and other effects really add to the immersive nature of this game. Great job with the sound department.

Last but not least, the story is very intriguing. I guess a lot of RE fans will enjoy this even if it doesn't directly involve the stories of the past RE games in the series. I found the story addicting even if it didn't have a lot of plot twists. It's a pretty straight-forward story. Some might like it, some might not. But the story isn't that interesting compared to other action games of this type. The game has creepy moments but it's not as scary as the previous games. There's a lot more action and lots of subtle humor to keep things upbeat. Leon is such a badass that he'll make you feel like you can take on all the weird things in this game. Fun story overall. Ashley is such a cutie! :P Once you finish the game, there's a bunch of extras to complete for some additional goodies so don't think you're done with it once you beat it.

Resident Evil 4 is an awesome action game with lots of memorable (and surprising) moments from all the enemies and situations you come up against. Whether you're a fan of the series or not, this is a game worth playing. It's excellent and entertaining (and that's coming from a non-RE fan like me). Get it now!

A truly cinematic experience.

GREAT game. I really enjoyed the story. One of the best I ever played. Very original with a lot of depth and great dialogue, I love the mature themes. The voice acting and music are awesome. The multiple outcomes will have me playing it again very soon just to enjoy the story again.

The only negative is that the graphics could've been better, The colors look bland and washed out. If only it had better lighting and maybe a better graphics engine in general, it would've been an even better game to watch. I do have to admit that the motion capture stuff is excellent.

Adventure gamers and gamers who enjoy a cinematic experience will DEFINITELY love this game. Kudos to the developer and Atari for bringing us such a unique game. :)

Limited Edition reviewed.

(I'm focusing on the entire Limited Edition package in this review so if you're curious, read on.)

Halo 2 is a hit or miss game depending how much of a fan you are. I've been a huge fan of Halo ever since the original came out and it was the first game I got for the Xbox and the only reason I got the Xbox in the first place. So after three long years waiting for the inevitable sequel, did the game satisfy me? Yes and no.

Let's get down to the gameplay, Halo 2 is still a lot of fun. The core gameplay mechanics are still there. If you played the original Halo, then you won't be disappointed with the controls. In fact, the most obvious enhancements include the ability to dual wield any small weapons in the game. It's insanely fun using two guns instead of one (like the original) and once you get into it, you won't wanna go back. They balanced the dual wielding elements by forcing you to drop your second gun when you do a melee attack or if you switch weapons. This prevents you from being too powerful which is a nice touch. Another nice feature is the ability to zoom in at any time. You can now scout locations and see enemies in the distance. It may seem like a frivilous upgrade but I can remember being frustrated not being able to see if an enemy was in the distance in the original. Now you can and you don't need the sniper rifle any more for it. You can also highjack all the vehicles in the game now which is great. The ability to drive all the vehicles was fun.

The graphics are excellent but they come with a few problems. I know Bungie did all they could to push the Xbox to its limit but it comes at a cost. The game runs smoothly at 60 fps but it does have slowdown from time to time. Even during the cutscenes, it'll occassionly slowdown which was quite distracting. But the major problem comes from the weird transition from low to high resolution textures. It's not seamless at all. You can see it clearly in the cutscenes and in parts of the game. It was very painful seeing the transitions cuz it took me out of the game as soon as it happens (and it happens a lot). I'm sure fans out there who liked the original will be disappointed by this. I think Bungie could've fixed this by simply doing prerendered cutscenes or by preloading all the major cutscenes in the hard drive. But the rest of the actual game looks great most of the time. Cortana looks a whole lot sexier than before and the human character faces look amazingly good. But considering other developers like Team Ninja who did such a superb job with games like Ninja Gaiden and the DOA series on the Xbox, Bungie should've been able to fix all those little problems. Still, it's a pretty game.

The sound is even better than the graphics. The game runs entirely in surround sound and sounds awesome. The explosions and gunfire are great. I was totally blown away by the voice acting. All the actors are good and they fit their roles very well. If you watch the DVD included with the Limited Edition version then you'll see that a lot of celebrities who were involved with the cast. And the music? Simply incredible. The score for Halo 2 is every bit as great as from any big budget Hollywood movie. I loved the soundtrack and it plays a lot more than it did in the original Halo. I can't wait to get the soundtrack!

Now, the single player mode was what let me down. I won't spoil it for you but the story wasn't as satisfying as the first game. There are a lot more characters involved this time and the focus seems to branch off too much. Master Chief is no longer the main character. There are a few twists but they don't mesh well. Also, the ending sucked. Period. It's a cliffhanger and that's not what I wanted after waiting for the game this long. As for the gameplay, some of the levels were repetitive (just like the first game) and you can get lost easily in several levels. I found myself backtracking a few times to areas where I wasn't supposed to be cuz the right path was easily hidden from view. I don't think the levels were designed to be that confusing but they were. Oh well. I played the multiplayer and it's extremely fun and addicting. It's even more fun when you have friends to play with since teamwork is crucial. I'll let the other reviews let you know the details of the multiplayer feature. All I can say is get Live so you can enjoy it too.

Now, let's see what's included with the Limited Edition version of Halo 2. For a measly extra five bucks, you get a gorgeous collector's tin box and a "Making of" DVD. The box is just superb and ranks right up there with one of best package designs in my DVD collection. But there is one snag. The placement of the DVD was just bad. The game disc was actually stored right OVER the DVD. I don't understand why they didn't store the DVD on the inside cover or provide an extra flap to hold the DVD. This caused a problem with the game disc. My game disc was scraped cuz the DVD was under it. Thankfully, my game didn't have any problems so I didn't need to return it. I'm sure a lot of gamers will be storing the DVD elsewhere. It was a bad idea to store the discs like that.

As for the DVD itself, it's pretty cool. We get a great one hour long documentary on the game and Bungie. It has plenty of interviews but I was disappointed they didn't interview a lot of the actors who did the voices. I would've wanted to hear them talk about their experiences and how Halo affected them (especially the voice actors for Master Chief and Cortana). The rest of the extras are quite nice with commentaries and an art gallery. I'll let you guys check them out yourselves. It's all pretty cool and only slightly better than the Halo/Brute Force Companion DVD that was released earlier. But I will let you know that the documentary contained one very lame segment on Bungie's annual pentathon which was a waste of time.

Overall, the game was good with several noticeable problems. I guess I was so hyped for the game that I came away with it slightly disappointed. I'm sure Bungie wanted more out of Halo 2 but I guess we'll have to settle for Halo 3 to see it finally conclude. Maybe. This is a definite must-have game for anyone who played the original.

A generic FPS game with some good ideas.

Resistance is an interesting FPS game with some good ideas but the execution is a bit uneven. I was excited to try out Sony's potential killer app but it seems maybe my expectations were too high.

The first thing you'll notice are the graphics. While sharp and solid, the art direction is fairly generic. The majority of the game is very reminiscent of other WW2 shooters such as Medal of Honor and Call of Duty. There are a lot of browns and greens throughout the game except for a couple of chapters. While it was novel in the beginning of the game (since it was populated with Chimera instead of humans), the levels looked fairly boring and generic as you progressed.

Speaking of the Chimera, their designs were decent but too many of them look too similar which made fighting them quickly tiring. There were only a few enemies that looked different and they didn't appear a lot compared to the grunts. While people rave about the guns in the game, I didn't find them that special or different than any other FPS games out there. They looked nice but the animations for the guns weren't anything special. Overall, the design and art direction for the game were fairly generic.

The sound and music is pretty good. The voice acting is solid but there's nothing overly memorable or outstanding about them. It's good not great. The music is decent with a lot of WW2 style military music that you'd come to expect from a game of this type. But it's not very memorable just like the voice acting. I was bit disappointed that the game didn't have any strong musical scores to pull you into the game either.

Now we have the main meat of the game; the gameplay. Resistance is a strange mix of all types FPS games that any other fellow FPS player has seen or experienced. The main game feels like it was inspired from games like the Medal of Honor/Call of Duty series. There are lots of battles with fellow soldiers and explosions everywhere. Later in the game, we have claustrophobic levels with a lot of shadows that is similar to Doom 3 including plenty of enemy scares. Finally, there are some levels which were clearly inspired by the Halo series with its sci-fi motif and structures. I can also list a few levels where it reminded me of games like the Half-Life series etc. You can tell that Insomniac was heavily influenced by all those games when they were making this game.

But all those various styles didn't really help the game meld together. Some levels were wildly inconsistent with its length. Some levels ended in a few minutes while other sections lasted a good amount of time before you hit a checkpoint. It's somewhat annoying and made the game either too easy or too hard. The enemy AI is also fairly dumb. They would either rush you or pop in and out behind cover. They were extremely predictable and very easy to dispatch once you remember their spawn points. I wasn't too impressed with any of the enemies in the game at all. I also found the guns to be overrated by other reviews. Only a few guns were interesting but I didn't find them that unique or fun to play. Their secondary attacks weren't that useful for me compared to their primary attacks.

Finally, the boring story. While the aliens in WW2 premise was unique, the narrative felt uninspired and uninteresting. The main character, Hale, is as generic as it gets and we hardly learn anything about the rest of the few characters we meet along the way. None of the Chimera show any sort of unique intelligence nor do they have any personalities. I was fairly disappointed with the story overall. I wish they developed the characters more and I really wish they made Hale more interesting. Couldn't they give us more background on the military and Chimera enemies? I guess not.

The real winner is the multiplayer. Logging into games is a breeze and matches are fun and relatively short. The various maps are well designed and the amount of players in these games are great. I had no lag when I was playing and finding a game is very easy and quick. This is the main reason why you would want to play this game. It's a lot more fun than the single player by a large margin. You will not be disappointed.

Overall, Resistance is fairly generic FPS game which tried to take in too many ideas and ended up with a lot of inconsistent levels and gameplay. The story is weak, the characters are forgettable and the entire experience is not very deep. I had to force myself to beat the single player simply because the levels were sooo boring. The single player is worth checking out, but the multiplayer is what saves Resistance from mediocrity.

A decent FPS game with some fun moments and plenty of repetition.

It was a decent experience with some fun missions in certain spots in the single player mode. The missions were a bit repetitive during the first half of the game while the second half mixed it up more with a larger variety of vehicles and weapons. The last mission was just insane and if it weren't for the multiplayer-type respawning feature, I would've tossed my controller at the TV screen. Yea, so I have mixed reactions about the game in general.

The graphics are gorgeous. The character models and textures are quite detailed and the weapons look pretty damn good. The maps are incredibly large with no loading whatsoever while you go from point A to point B which was pretty cool. There is a lot of detail in the maps even though some parts are a bit sparse. The water effects are beautiful and the trees sway and move in the sunlight. Certain parts of the maps feature really nice effects with the sky which added to the mood for the missions. The vehicles also look great and are detailed as well. I do have to say that the explosions aren't as well done as the rest of the game.

The sound is a bit strange. There's a weird echo with a majority of the gunshots and explosions to accentuate the wide open battles. But they kind of take away the visceral feeling that CoD4 had. Explosions lacked the boominess that other shooters have as well. But the sound for the guns, vehicles and destruction of buildings were really good. I also have to say that the voice acting is excellent and the characters are quite likeable because of that. It's not amazing as MGS4 but it's better than a lot of other shooters out there. The music ranges from meh to good. I like some of the tracks but there's nothing that stands out.

The gameplay is good. The game is basically a multiplayer game crammed into the single player mode. As I've said the objectives are quite repetitive and will actually wear you out over time. I wasn't able to complete any one map in one sitting. They are quite large and you'll basically have to keep going from one point to another under heavy fire in spots. The only time you have any breaks is when you find yourself a tank (but that's up to you). The majority of the game will have you and your three teammates taking on an entire army. It's really disappointing that the game didn't include a lot of AI allies to help you out in the majority of the maps. Considering the huge settings, I was puzzled why the devs didn't have sections in the map where we had your allies helping out. It was a missed opportunity for some great set pieces.

Anyways, fun game but I think this game should be played for the multiplayer more. I haven't tried it out yet but I heard it's good. The single player had its moments but it wasn't as exciting or fun as CoD4 and it's missing a lot of fundamental gameplay mechanics that would've made it more fun and interesting. The story is decent but it's pretty bland and there aren't a lot of wow moments. It's worth checking out for FPS fans.

dear GiantBomb contest for winning a Zune. I gained 14,000 points after seeing if a glitch worked. I have reported it, and my points were removed once before, but have since been added back. Regardless, do not give me a Zune, because I do not have over 5,000 honest points. Thanks!

I know! She was so pointless. I mean at times she came with a friken helicopter and blew everyone up. Why couldn't we have just used that the whole time? I mean I am being open minded here. I need to finish Sigma though so I can find out what happens to that other blond chick.

Hell, the ending was okay, it was fairly satisfying. it looked almost like a a metaphor for Itagaki's departure, imo. i just hate that new girl in the game. they should've used Ayane more.

Ok well Mentor is ALOT different. Lets put it this way, all the ninjas throughout the game ( not any demons ) so for example the rocket ninjas, are all in the first level. There are less items ( meaning less chests ) and its probably just me, but the save points seem really far away. The thing with me about this game is, I hate it like REALLY hate it, but it can be so satisfying slicing enemies. However the ending pissed me off to no end. i would of rather had a cliff hanger.
