You clearly have not seen Dead Rising Wii in motion, it looks like a fricking DS game lol.

Of course it is possible if Capcom directs the required resources towards a Wii project. With those two games there are major technical hurdles to overcome so I they will be coming in the form we see them now. With SF I expect a new game, perhaps even Alpha4, or MvC3. SF3: TS is by far a deeper fighter and a lot more fun when mastered. I just wish Third Strike had a few more SF2 characters and the same awesome backgrounds that Double impact has, but I do own that also on Dreamcast.

Awesome trailer, but that trailer does seem to show a monotonous tone, however that could be for artistic reasons with it's B movie style I suppose :?.

Seriously not interested in another Zombie game this year, L4D will make me hit the fill level there, but it does look OK and it could be a lot of fun.

The London Games Festival kicks off on October 24th bringing a series of events to the my home city that celebrate the wonderful world of videogames. I always look forward to it each year as there is always loads of cool stuff to check out around the city with all my gaming friends in London. I hook up with friends I play with online and that adds a little something to the proceedings. It's always fun and sometimes a lttle wild as last year was when I initated the rabble into the wonders of combining Absinthe and arcade gaming lol.

Last year I did some cool stuff which included playing the very latest Q4 games that had not even been released yet. I also got the opportunity to play some of the very first video games ever created, and some of the most iconic, many of which I had never had the chance to play before. It was of course very cool for a lover of retro gaming.

They also had a series of lectures on videogame production and the history of them. Normally I find lectures very dull affairs, as I am sure many others do. I can barely stand the lectures I attend at the National Gallery for my private study, yet these on the other hand were a revelation as I have never been to lectures and listened so attentively and not wanted them to end. I found it all fascinating, I learnt so much about the industry and the design processes involved in making videogames. It made me think about games in a way that I had never done previously. As a result I now have greater appreciation of them as a creative mediium and hold many more in high regard.

I currently have no intention of entering the industry as I am perfectly content with what I do, but one day I would certainly like to have a creative role in the development of a videogame. This years festival will see a careers fair for those wanting to get advice from professionals already deep within the industry, it will have representatives from the big development houses attending. I am going, not in order to snag a job, but instead to network with other artists that have a appreciation of gaming in the hope that someday it might lead to a bit role. My first ever job was actually at a games company amazingly, it was my work experience during secondary school at the age of 17. I recall stating to my tutor that if he did not find something suitable I would not bother to even turn up. I listed videogames twice in the three boxes available on the request form, and cartooning in the one remaining lol. I spent far too many lessons day dreaming while scribbling onto table tops, some of it very vulgar and well detailed featuring teachers lol. Anyway, in the end I found a place at Ocean Software, the peeps that made the early Robocop games on the C64. I cannot remember much from my experience then due to they years of substance abuse since then but I do remember being what was in effect a well worked slave for two weeks. They had me running out to the shops in Covent Garden to buy them white chocolate muffins and latte's. They did however give me some Rayban shades as a leaving prezzie so that kinda made up for the temporary slave stuff. I felt so grown up heading home from work wearing my Rayban shades on the London underground lol.

In line with the past two years yet again Video Games Live will be part of the London festival also. I have been lucky enough to attend everyone that has been held in London so far and this year will be no exception as I have already booked my tickets. For those that do not know what VGL is, it's basically a high quality stage show with w 32 piece orchestra playing all the great music from all the great games including MGS and Halo, Zelda and Mario, Final Fantasy and many other ****cs. I adore videogame music and have found the two previous events actually very moving. It really is something special hearing the melodies we love being played live in such a awesome fashion.

I have just seen some footage of Call of Duty WaW and it looks **** awesome. Having Keifer Sutherland in there is made of  win.

I do not care if the game was made by Treyarch as others are, many are dismissing the game as a result and I think that's stupid. Treyarch are aware of the criticisms leveled at them in the past and are going to prove people wrong with this game. They have had 2 years, ample time to develop this game without interference, unlike past projects, in turn expect a great game. Apparently it feels just like CoD4 but the tactics you have to employ are totally different because the Japanese soldier tactics are so unique. They will jump out of cover in groups trying to Bayonette you not caring about whether they will die in the process. It's got **** awesome fire propagation effects, as good as FarCry2!. The Flamethrower weapon looks excellent and all the destruction that happens via it's use looks cool. The competitive CoOp is going to be awesome by the looks of things.I bought a new graphics card for my PC yesterday. I got a XFX 1Gig DDR3 9800GX2. I am amazed by the performance so far. On the PC front I cannot wait till Crysis Warhead and Far Cry 2 are released next month, they should run fine with my new card. I am also really looking forward to a patch of all things, that patch being a mod to the existing PC game The Witcher which currently has bad technical and gameplay issues that will be rectified when a new Enhanced edition is released at retail next month, existing owners such as me will get a free patch tol boost the game which is great news as I love that game but have held off completing it. Right now I am playing this really awesome DS game called Soul Bubbles. It's such a charming well crafted game I have fallen completely in love with it, sadly so has my GF who has it locked into the baby blue DS I bought her.

Joakim Sandberg

I recently got the opportunity to interview indie games developer Joakim Sandberg, here is that interview in full...

Joakim: Hello! I will answer as best I can.

Q:Do you have any plans to submit Noitu Love 2 to Nintendo for approval onto Wii Ware?. I myself think that the Wii is perfect given the nature of the control scheme you have devised, in fact I would say it could possibly improve upon the existing method. Do you think the same also?

I would absolutely love to see it on the service as, yes, it is very fitting of the gameplay, but given the nature the game was made it would basically have to be rewritten as a dedicated Wii project, which really sucks, because I don't know any portable programming language. Maybe someday I'll have the resources to, or someone else is willing to help me.

Q:What are your overall thoughts on the service Nintendo are now providing?. Have you managed to play any of these Wii Ware games yourself, like say Lost Winds etc, and what are your thoughts on them.

Of course I like it, it lets smaller studios get their ideas out there. I've played Lost Winds so far and I enjoyed it. I do find it a bit of a problem with storage space on the console, though, as most other avid gamers, but it's not as large an issue for me just yet as I don't download a lot of games.

Q:Is what Nintendo are offering with Wii Ware attractive to you as a indie developer?

Of course. If I had a small group of people (a small studio, if you will), I'd go for WiiWare first as I love to think of new ways of playing games. The process seems painless, but it seems you can't really know exactly when your game hits the service once you've submitted it. I might be wrong. But definitely, I'd love to work on it.

Q: What have been your favourite Nintendo games over the years, and what gaming systems were you raised on and from what age?

I played a lot of Sega when I didn't own a console and just rented one, but when I finally got some it was always Nintendo for some reason. First of those systems was the NES, and I've owned all of them since sans the Virtual Boy. Out of all games ever my favorites are Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and Metroid Fusion. From those three one can tell I love it whenever Nintendo tries something different with their main franchises.

Q:What are your thoughts on the direction Nintendo have taken with the Wii and the DS.

It has been very successful to them and it was the right move. Personally, as a gamer for many years, I don't play the new "casual"-labeled games much as I like games with action. I don't play many new games anymore, though. It's not that I am lost in nostalgia, I just don't find many games appealing anymore.

Q:Is there any possibility of a DS version?

It's the same dilemma as with Wii; it's not easy to port, unfortunately.

Q: If so are you able to see ways now in which you could utilize the unique capabilties of the DS such as dual screens and microphone in a Noitu Love game?

I wouldn't use the microphone. I see the Wii as having a lot more better features for the game. Compare it to how you make a special move by flicking the mouse right. On Wii you would just flick your wrist regardless of the edge of the screen, while the DS does have its boundaries. You could just lift the stylus and drag over and over, but I think Wii would work better for overall fluency.

Q:Considering the success of Gunstar Future Heroes and Astroboy on GBA Noitu Love 2 which has many similarities also seems perfect for a handheld version.

Maybe so. To me I play all games at home anyway, I don't really make use of the "portable" aspect. I think most "hardcore" gamers do as well. I've played very little true action games; I often tend to make games in genres I don't really play for some reason. I do love Metal Slug and Contra 3 though, but those are hardly portable.

caption

Q:Is there any possibility for a fully fledged Wii game with greater polish and strengths all round in future?.

The possibilities is entirely in the hands of some company that would hire me to do so. I have one idea, I'd love to develop for it.

Q:Are you currently seeking to tie up some investment into such a project or you open to the idea of working with another licensed Wii developer in order to make that happen?

I think I'd rather get hired by someone considering I don't really know the people to form my own business at that scale.

Q: If not, are you a one man show and intend on staying that way?

I don't particularly enjoy being a one-man army anymore as it gets tiring. I want to make bigger games now, but I don't have the resources just yet.

What's next for Noitu Love?, and what's next for you?

I'm not making a sequel to Noitu Love anytime soon if we're talking about making games the way I made NL2. I love that universe though, and I'd like to get back to it sometime. Right now I am still sort of contemplating my next move, but I am still trying things on the same platform as NL2.

Q:Do you have any projects you are working on that you can give me some sneaky info on in teaser form?

I constantly change my mind on these matters. Since I'm still starting with new things it could change tomorrow, but as of right now I am working a little on a game that involves a suitcase.

Linkyshinks:
Thank you for your time Joakim, I wish you and the game all the success you can muster  :)

Joakim: No problem, it was a pleasure ;)

Homage to the Super Famicom box

There are Japanese dudes in Japan that would go crazy for this shit!, lol. They were only released on the Japanese version of Club Nintendo early this year on their star store, in very limited supply. I played Super Mario World on my Virtual Console earlier, and it felt great, all the memories came flooding back :D. I have more than 50 games on my Wii VC and quite a few of them are SNES games so I will be certain to make good use of one of them. While keeping the other one minty fresh for collection purposes ;).

Most of you guys have never played with a Famicom pad with the original colours I imagine. You instead had those terrible purple tones, along with that f'd up looking SNES, I should add, lol. What the hell were they thinking with that design and colour scheme?, it still puzzles me to this day. I think it's one of the few times Europe has got 1up from Nintendo on you guys.

This post relates to: What videogame franchise took the biggest turn for the worse?

To be, or not to be, will SEGA make me shine again?

It's easily Sonic for me, without any question!. Sonic Team have raped all the good stuff out of my favourite spiky furball and some of the games they have come up with beg belief.  It has become a sad joke among gamers now, and with every new game on the horizon it brings fresh disappointment drawing near. I myself chuckle as if to say, what now?, what nonsense have they come up with this time.

Sonic Team should be well and truly ashamed of some of their past efforts, they have been a disgrace to SEGA in recent times and have let down the company big time. However, the Dimps game, Sonic Rush DS was for me a little ray of light in these recent bleak times. That game went back to basics and played to the strengths of the early games, while also adding enough innovation to keep things feeling fresh. T'was a great little gem of a game, one I found very enjoyable and refreshing. The new multi-format game seems to have taken some of that on board, still, I have been down this road far too many times now to get my hopes up now. When I see footage of this whole Werewolf Sonic I am not exactly filled with reassurance to say the least. However, the actual classically styled levels look great on the other hand, they seem to have merged the best of 3D found in the recent Wii game along with the best aspects from the early games.

Game upon game, Sonic Team bring the pain!, to many fans like me, I really hope that all ends. If it does not happen with this new game, SEGA should really then take him to the nearest mascot cemetery and leave him to rest in peace.

Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword Review

When Ninja Gaiden DS was announced by Team Ninja last year some new fans to the franchise may have turned their noses up in disgust that their favourite games would be coming to the DS, in apparently reduced form. I myself was sceptical also as to whether you could recreate sufficiently some of the console game experience on the humble little DS.

Ninja Gaiden in it's modern form away from it's spiritual home on Nintendo NES concentrates very strongly on fast paced combat of the highest calibre. It is a game filled with depth of control that requires you to attack in a rhythmic fashion and to block so also. Watch a noob play and it seems like just another slasher, but watch a expert play and it can be wow worthy enough for you to drop your jaw. Also add in the fact it is notoriously hard. Trying to replicate that level of intensity depth and difficulty on the humble the DS must have made some weary of it all, not solely because of the machines technical limitations but also because of the DS user base and how it's populous would take to the game. This is partly because of what they are normally use to.

Ninja Gaiden DS is made by Team Ninja, not a second string team, but in fact the real deal headed by Tomonobu Itagaki himself, that fact alone tells you how important they see this title. So the question is has their commitment been worth it, and in turn does it mean the DS has got a great action game, well that will be answered in the conclusion of this review.

The Ninja Gaiden DS story is set 6 months after the one told in xbox game which was based around the Dark Dragon Blade Incident. It revolves around the story of Kureha and her sister Momnji in regards to the Eye of the Dragon, the jewel that will transform the Dragon Sword into it's true nature. The game opens to a beautifully drawn Anime style cut scene cut scene of which there are many in this game. You see a village elder Muramasa calling upon Kureha at her grave, she then appears to him as he then reminisces about how she and Ryu were once inseparable. He tells her little sister Momiji and Ryu are practising now....

The game starts with a degree of novelty, it sees you involved in a interactive cut scene with you actually in control Momnji, a beautiful female Ninja who is Kureha's little sister. You are sparring against the main protagonist Ryu Hayabusa in the Forest of Shadows by the foot of a waterfall. This area of the game acts like a tutorial teaching you the very basic combat techniques using stylus strokes. It's actually really more of a play around before the actual tutorial takes place when you set off on a journey and are attacked by monsters. The tutorial works well enough, but ideally I found that if you find a quiet area and actually take the time to practise as you learn new techniques it's a lot better.

The game as you may know requires you to hold the DS in book format, all attacks and movement and selections are controlled by the touch screen, all the buttons on the DS as well as the D-Pad act as a block, and block only. It all works very well and efficiently. I found it to be very comfortable to play in such a way and am sure others will do also.

The Ninja Gaiden series is about being able to employ defensive and attack manoeuvres seamlessly, Ninja Gaiden DS does this also, and it does so very well. Basic movement of your character is done via the sword-stylus, when you touch close to your character with the stylus held down on screen your character can be moved around the screen in the directions you guide the stylus. Slashing across enemies with the stylus causes Ryu to attack them with a series of swipes which is dependent on the number of times you slash across them. When you slash across a enemy while at distance Ryu charges over towards them with a sword swipe. When slashing upwards with the stylus, you see Momiji or Ryu jump upward. You can also double jump with two well timed upward slashes and also initiate attacks while up there. When double jumping you create more time to plan a route of attack even it it is a mere milliseconds. It comes in very handy when playing the game on the hard difficulty which I thoroughly recommend this game is played at, *sighs*, but I will get to that later.

When performing a double jump, by slashing down on a enemy below while in mid air causes Ryu to charge down on the foes with a downward double handed sword slash. While you jump and slash horizontally across the screen it sees you perform a Flying Swallow attack. And yes, it looks as graceful as it sounds. Tapping on enemies directly at distance causes your character to throw Shurikens at them, while jumping and tapping on enemies while in mid air sees you float down gently while continuing to throw at your selected foes. There is also the powerful Izuna Drop that adds some depth into your attacks. By slashing downward on enemies then twice upward it causes Ryu to thrust up his sword at a foe making them fly up into the air, he then grabs them while in mid air and slams them to the ground with speed and jumps back into combat stance immediately. There is also the classic wall jumping of previous games to be found within the game. Zig zagging or double slashing upward with the stylus makes Ryu or Momiji rize upward in a acrobatic manner.

It all looks very cool and stylish, and it's a hallmark of the series. When you play Ninja Gaiden DS you will you are playing a Ninja Gaiden game, all the small subtleties are there like the stance Ryu takes as he enters a new area. It all looks great and will be appreciated by all regardless to whether you have played a previous game or not.

The Dragon Sword is your primary weapon in the game, Shurikens and a Bow act as distance weapons, as well as that you also have "Ninpo", that's Ninja magic to the ill educated Ninja. By tapping a Sanskrit icon in the top left of the screen when you have the required energy you go into a character input screen as Ryu shouts "Nin-po!", you are then required to fill in a Sanskrit character with your stylus to initiate the special move. It works well. The first Ninpo you get in the game is a large fireball which can be moved around directly using the stylus in order to take out enemies. Ninpo is also used in the game in order to solve physical puzzles and open new areas.

The controls in the game work very well for the most part, however, their are some issues. Due to the nature of some of the 2D water colour styled environments and the way the playing field has been constructed with alternating playing angles there are at times where the accuracy diminishes. These areas tend to be when your character is in the far distance and you are expected to employ the same deft touch as required elsewhere in combat in the foreground. I myself found that keeping my stylus locked onto the touch pad and drawing enemies out of distance was a way around the issue in heated combat, even still it's far from perfect.  It's certainly a shame, it should not be a problem with clever level design to work around it. Thankfully though it does not impact the game too badly as the combat elsewhere is wickedly fun.

Combat can be blistering fast at times requiring you to perform series of attacks and combos in quick succession. Touch input, the DS working to it's strengths have in a way brought about a great Ninja experience where reflexes are paramount. Combat for the most part sees you drawn into what are essentially combat arenas where you have to defeat foes thrown at you via the dark portals that appear. Only after removing the foes can you move onto the next area. It's old school and cool and it works well.

There are sections in the game where after missions you go back to your Ninja village and speak to Muramasa the town elder, while taking the time to upgrade your basic abilities. It's a nice distraction for the combat and acts to add to the whole story. The combat is where this game really peaks though of course.

On the subject of sound, Itagaki as some of you will know has a liking for the ladies, some of the sounds Momiji makes at the start of the game sound suspiciously like little orgasms to me. That aside, the main combat sounds are fantastic and aid the intensity of the game very well. The soundtrack is composed mainly of Edo harmonies and the sound of Taiko drums that seem to try to persuade a degree of rhythm to your fighting style. There is speech, the odd line and murmur but it is nothing really note worthy even if cute and stylishly done. The game uses it cool comic book style cut scenes which hark back to days of old on the games on the NES which were noted by many at the time. They looks beautiful and use the dual screen ability well.

Sadly Ninja Gaiden DS is a easy game, especially for those that are seasoned Gaidenz. It will take six to seven hours or so in the default difficulty setting. It is understandable to some degree, but as I have said earlier Ninja Gaiden games previously have all been very difficult. The bosses in the game can be easily beaten when you apply any decent amount of attention, it's simply a case of working out their attack patterns and doing away with them. Very rarely will you have to lose life. Also add into the fact the game molly cuddles you with save points that litter the game.

In the normal difficulty you can stylus slash like a maniac and get through to the near later stages of the game with rarely having to use your block that much. This is a first for the Ninja Gaiden series, and a disappointing one for the purists. However, and this is a big however, after completing the game once the the hard difficulty is unlocked and this entire game becomes a bit of a revelation, foes will now take a much harder beating in order to die and blocking is all important. The bosses also need a serious battering requiring the very best of your skills you are capable of. The game then will last nearly twice as long and the experience far greater. I cannot fathom why the hard difficulty was not selectable from the start for those that wanted it straight off, it is shame in my eyes as it would have made the initial experience of the game superior for the seasoned players. Itagaki has stayed true to his word though, there is much depth to be had in the hardest difficulty, so much so that in fact it's only WiFi functionality allows you to post your stats and high scores via Nintendo WFC. This is something which will please the purists with fast reflexes.

Ninja Gaiden DS is certainly the best action game of it's kind on DS, and it also acts as a shining light for other developers to be so bold as do something only seen here so far. Itagaki and his team have created a little gem. It has excellent fast paced gameplay and excellent artistic direction and story well told for a handheld action game.  I thoroughly recommend you all try before you buy, it's been available on demo booths in both Japan and the U.S. The demo is also available via The Everybody's Nintendo Channel for Wii owners to check out.

This game really deserves to be played by all, not just Ninja Gaiden fans alone. As Itagaki himself says "when you play this game for the first time you will wonder why nobody has made a game like it before" it's true.

Do buy this game if it's your thing, heed my advice and see what this game is really about in the hard difficulty setting, you wont regret it.
