Nice picks, man. Looking forward to the rest of the awards. Maybe I should play some Silent Hill Homecoming if you say its story is better than Metal Gear's because Metal Gear's story completely blew me away.

You're one generous guy, Denis. Buying Plasma TV's and Wii's for Christmas presents is awesome. Also, lots of games you sold geez. I personally don't like trading in games. Haven't done that in a long long time. But that's just because I like building up my collection.

About Me

Well to start, I obviously play a lot of games. It's been this way pretty much my whole life and I don't see that changing anytime soon. I'd like to get to know people of the Giant Bomb community a little better so let's hook up and play some games! My Xbox Live gamertag is "Rezzolution", my PSN ID is "Rezzolution17", and well to be honest I don't feel like looking up my Wii friend number at the moment so i'm gonna do that a little later. See you online!

This post relates to: No More Heroes, Sonic Unleashed, Gears of War 2, PlayStation Home, New Xbox Experience, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, Resident Evil 4, Dead Space, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, Left 4 Dead

Well to start this off, it's Thanksgiving break. Thank God. It's time to relax and unwind a bit.
As for the gaming side of things, I've been playing quite a bit of games lately. With a few games taking up most of my time.
Zombos!

1. I'm still playing tons of Left 4 Dead with a few select friends of mine. I played through all of the scenarios on advanced, and I want to try and get through them on the expert difficulty, but it gets pretty damn hard. This is a good thing, though. It makes every mistake crucial and keeps you on your toes because very little damage will kill you. And I mean VERY little damage. One shot from your buddy's shotgun will knock you to the ground. So you're forced to really watch that you don't accidentally shoot your teamates. As I discussed earlier, I am a bit disappointed in the amount of content the game shipped with. I know there's bound to be content later especially on the PC version, but the game really should have shipped with more maps. Or have not full retail price. Sure, the maps have a lot of replayability, but still. The versus mode does give the game quite a bit more replayability, though. Playing zombies is super fun. My favorite is the smoker.

2. I GameFlew out Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe because all of these other releases have all but ate up my entire bank account. But i'm starting to regret only renting it because
Ouch.
it's the type of game that I want to support by purchasing it. So I think down the line a little bit i'm going to give it the full purchase. It is a fantastic game and I want to play a ton more of it. I think this is the fighting game to finally come out that I feel I could spend enough time with to finally figure out how to be good at a Mortal Kombat game. With all of the previous titles, I would play them just enough to know that none of my friends could beat me if we ever decide to play and then put it on a shelf and moved on. But I really want to stick with this one and learn to play it much better. I can't emphasize how good this game is and how much of a step in the right direction it is. After playing quite a bit of it I started to wonder how some of the reviewers of it could be so harsh on some of the flaws of the game because in the end, all that matters is how the fighting feels. And it feels terrific. Oh, and the character i've been playing most is the Flash. He's a super fun character that's extremely rewarding when you pull off some of his pro moves/juggles.

3. I played through Dead Space recently. I know i'm a bit behind on this one, but whatever. Before Dead Space I was never really into the survival horror genre. But boy has this game
It's moments like this that make this game so special.
changed my perspective here. After I started playing this one, I just couldn't put it down. I was watching JohnnyAvacado's video blogs where he was talking about how he would just wake up in the morning thinking about Dead Space and not being able to wait to play it after work, and I experienced the exact same thing. This game totally blew me away. Just the atmosphere alone is enough to warrant giving this one a try. The graphics and sound are terrific, the story is gripping, and the combat is top notch. The whole strategic dismemberment is absolutely brilliant. It it not only new and exciting to see, but it keeps the combat feeling fresh and hectic. Another thing that helps the combat feel fresh and exciting is the fact that there is a good selection of weapons to choose from all with their own strengths and weaknesses. It seems like nearly every enemy in the game is weak against certain weapons which is great because that makes you change between a variety of weapons instead of just maxing out one of them and only using that one. Though, I did find that the pulse rifle was the one to use for most of the game. It seemed to work on a good variety of enemies. So yeah, it's a great game and one I strongly recommend. I want to play through on Impossible sometime in the future, too.

4. I finally decided to start playing some Resident Evil 4. I know i'm like one of the 5 people in the world that haven't played it to completion, and I can't wait to play more because it's extremely fun so far. I've had the Wii version for almost a year now and it has been sitting in my backlog the whole time. And with myself being at my parent's house for a good portion of the week where only my Wii is at, I think i'll be able to play through it all pretty quick here.

5. I bought WoW: Wrath of the Lich King. And don't get me wrong, it's a great expansion pack. But i'm getting a bit tired of playing WoW. I started up again about a month or two ago and finally worked a couple characters of mine up to 70 for the expansion. But after playing a bit of Northrend, i'm not so sure that I want to grind another 10 levels on my characters. It's getting a bit repetitive. I did play the Death Knight quests, though. And those quests are really fun and interesting. If only all of the quests held my attention that much. So yeah, I think i'm pretty much done with WoW. At least for now. Maybe during summer when no games are coming out i'll give it another try but until then, i'm just going to be focusing on the swarm of AAA titles that are piling up next to me and will continue to pile up for quite a while with all of the early 2009 releases coming up.

It's a party!
6. The New Xbox Experience came out as you're surely all aware of. I had been looking quite forward to this for a while and the main reason was because with it came support for 1680x1050 resolution via VGA cables. This was nice and all, but it surely isn't the biggest feature to me anymore. The hard drive installation is the star of the show here in my opinion. Installing games to your hard drive is simply awesome. It takes no more than 10 minutes to install a game to the drive, which then makes the games load faster as well as makes them not have to spin in the disc tray thus reducing noise. There's really no reason not to install games to your hard drive, or at least the one you're currently playing. I could probably understand it if you're stuck with only the 20GB hard drive because until recently I fell into this category. But as some of you already know, my 360 RROD'd and I was forced to purchase a whole new console because the warranty had expired on mine. So I went ahead and purchased the 60GB model, giving myself plenty of room to install games with the NXE. And looking back at it, i'm actually pretty happy that my 360 RROD'd because otherwise I would only be able to install one game at a time. But installing games to your hard drive isn't the only feature that I like with the NXE. I'm actually starting to appreciate avatars. Sure, they're basically just Mii's, but i've got to admit, it's pretty awesome seeing all of my friend's avatars they make. This along with party chat has really made the 360 seem like much more of community system to me.

*sigh*
7. I got accepted into the Playstation Home Beta along with 99,999 other people a couple days ago. And to be honest, it came off as pretty dumb to me. I know it's only the beta, but damn. Everything about it seems sketchy to me. It reminded me a lot of Second Life. And Second Life is like, the worst thing ever in my opinion. There's not nearly enough ways to customize your avatar, everything seems to load extremely slow, it controls weird, the menus are clunky, and it doesn't really make much sense to me. It seems like they're trying to make some kind of hub to meet up with people and play games, but in order for this to happen I feel like it needs to be much more streamlined. I just can't imagine anyone wanting to log into Home when they turn on their PS3's because it takes forever, and it's really not fun at all. I actually thought the idea sounded kind of neat before seeing the beta, but now it just seems like a waste of time and effort on Sony's part. It kind of makes me feel like they keep delaying it because they're embarassed to put it out. But maybe i'm just being too harsh on it. It is a beta. And some of these problems might be fixed by then. I guess we'll have to wait and see. But I have my doubts.

8. I've been playing a little more Gears of War 2 helping out some friends of mine with the story mode every now and then. And guess what? It's still awesome.

Please, Sonic. Don't let me down again.
9. Sonic Unleashed is being gameflown to me right now as well. I'm really, really hoping it is a step in the right direction with the Sonic games. As we can all probably agree, the Sonic name is no longer special to most of us. I know there's still a few people holding on for dear life hoping that he can get back up off his knees and have some good games (including myself), but at this point it's just starting to become a nostalgia play that's breaking our hearts more often than not. I feel like Sonic Unleashed is the make it or break it game for Sonic. If this one doesn't work, I think Sonic is going to be losing a whole lot of his fanbase.

It's like chasing a leprechaun.
10. Lastly, something that suprised me happened recently. I was looking for some Wii games to purchase that I missed out on playing because I'm going to be spending a good portion of my Thanksgiving break at my parents house where I only have a Wii to play, and I thought back to No More Heroes. This was a game that I really wanted to play when it came out but never got around to purchasing it/playing it. And to top it all off, the retail price is only $20 now. But after searching around, I quickly realized that nobody has this game on shelves. Which is sad, really. This is widely accepted among the video game crowd as one of the Wii's best games, and due to the fact that there aren't too many people willing to give the game a chance, it's no longer profitable to keep it on retail shelves. I mean, even GameStop doesn't have any new copies! This got me thinking a lot about this subject lately, and it made me realize that with these types of niche games, you have to make the purchase pretty close to their release date because otherwise, they seem to fall off the face of the planet. Amazon does still have them on their website, though. So I think i'm going to have to buy it off there.

Well that pretty much sums things up on this end. This blog ended up being quite a lot longer than I had intended, but hey. I kind of had to get some things off my chest. It's been great seeing everyone's blogs lately. It has been good seeing everyone's opinions on all of the new releases this season. Keep them coming, guys! And feel free to ask questions or leave comments on any of the subjects I discussed. I feel like I talked about a couple issues that people might have been thinking about to themselves lately.

Keep gaming and have a great Thanksgiving!

This post relates to: Left 4 Dead

I decided to pick up Left 4 Dead on the PC after all. I was talking to some of my friends and they all said we should go that way and I quickly agreed. It runs like gold on my PC and is tons of fun. I've been playing it with some friends of mine and my roomate and I can see myself sinking a lot of time into it. It's not nearly as fun by yourself, though as you can probably guess. I do have a couple complaints though...

1. There aren't enough guns. There's maybe 10 total and it gets a little repetitive using the same gun every time you play.

2. There aren't enough levels. I've beaten 3 of 4 scenarios already, but that's not too bad because they surely have a ton of replayability.

3. And lastly, I couldn't get the voice stuff to work too well. But that's my problem and I'm sure it'll be working soon.

I think PC is the way to go if you have a PC that can run it nice and smooth. Which is most recentish PCs.

I played the multiplayer a bit too. It is totally awesome, but it takes some time. So if you plan on playing, make sure you have a good hour or two to devote. Otherwise when you leave, you kinda screw everyone else because then they're just playing against bots.

But overall, it's one hell of a game. It's fun as hell to just blast throuhg waves of zombos and I can't wait to dive in some more tomorrow.

Oh, and NXE. Can't wait.

This post relates to: World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, Left 4 Dead, Mirror's Edge, Gears of War 2

Like everyone else on this planet, I got Gears of War 2 on Friday, and it is incredible. I played a bunch of the single player and some multiplayer last night and then woke up early and hammered through the rest of the campaign. I can assure you that everything you've heard about it is true. So it's awesome. The story was much more intriguing than the first, the graphics look a whole hell of a lot better, there's texture pop in pretty regularly but it isn't nearly enough to bother you, and it's not just Gears 1.5. Oh, and Marcus' scar looks disgusting. I do have to give mad props to Horde mode. My roomate and I put it on casual and got to wave 40 before getting sleepy and calling it a night and it was hella fun. If only there were a zombie game with the exact same premise... only you could barricade stuff... one can dream, right? Anyways, yeah Gears 2 is one hell of a game and I have a feeling it'll be what people are playing on Xbox Live for a long time to come. I know it'll be my go to multiplayer game. So go buy it  if by some miracle you haven't already. You'll like it. Unless you didn't like the first Gears. But who didn't?
Mirror's Edge is next. Can't wait. Oh, and Wrath of the Lich King comes out the same day. Dunno how much time that'll be getting though with this stack of unplayed games sitting next to me.

Then Left 4 Dead. Hell yes.

This post relates to: Mirror's Edge, Far Cry 2, Dead Space, Fable II, Fallout 3, LittleBigPlanet, Left 4 Dead, Gears of War 2

-There are so many damn games coming out! Ahhh! No doubt is it awesome, but damn I can't keep up. This whole college thing is taking up way too much of my time and it's starting to take a toll on me. Any ideas to relieve stress?...
-I have Fable 2, Far Cry 2, Dead Space, Fallout 3, and LittleBigPlanet all sitting next to me with only LittleBigPlanet even being unsealed. It's pretty damn rediculous how little time I have for anything but school work these days.

-On top of it all, my 360 RROD'd today. That didn't help my mood. The best part about it is that my old 360 was first gen meaning the warranty was no good anymore. So I had some fun tearing that apart. Went and blew all of my money on a 60gb console. I almost went for the elite...but...it's black...eew. And $100 more...

-Pretty damn tight on money over here now. I had all my games perfectly planned out to buy with my budget, but looks like I might have to wait on MK vs. DC and C&C: Red Alert 3.

-I'll be getting Gears 2, Left4Dead, and Mirror's Edge for sure though.

-And Prince of Persia. The TGS trailer sold me on it. If you haven't seen it you should. I watched it like 10 times.

-Another thing that's holding me back from playing these games is I don't wanna feel rushed on any of them. Especially Dead Space. And with my time constraints at the moment, there's no way I could just sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

-I did play through all of the LBP story mode. Gotta say I liked it quite a bit. Wish the servers were up though...That game is perfect for short gaming sessions.

-Christmas break is gonna be glorious.

-And I want the NXE pretty bad.

-Alright, I got what I needed to off my chest. Now back to staring at my wallet and trying to figure out how I can afford all of these damn games.

God of War: Chains of Olympus Review

Taking control of Kratos and his Blades of Athena in both God of War and God of War 2 on the Playstation 2 was one of the most amazing experiences I had with that console. I couldn’t help but feel like the ultimate badass as I tore your way through mythological creatures, clever puzzles, and Greek gods. With God of War: Chains of Olympus, Ready at Dawn tries to bring that same incredible experience to the PSP, and for the most part they succeed.

Chains of Olympus takes place before the events of the original God of War where Kratos is paying off his debt to the gods after being saved by Aries. The story starts out in the city of Attica where the Persian army has unleashed a monstrous Basilisk upon the city. Your goal is to defend the city and ultimately take down the Basilisk threat. This opening sequence gives the game a great first impression and shows that the PSP is capable of giving these epic boss battles that the console versions were so highly praised for. Once finished in Attica, the gods give you one more task which I don’t want to go into too much detail about, but let me assure you, the story will keep you intrigued for the entire ride.

The first thing you will notice when picking up the PSP and trying to control Kratos is that it controls almost exactly how you would expect. All of the controls are pretty much the same as the console versions except the PSP lacks a right analog stick, so in order to evade attacks you must hold down both the left and right shoulder buttons and press the analog stick in the direction you want to move. This works well for the most part though it does take some getting used to. Another thing you might notice is that Kratos’ attacks and combos are exactly the same. This is mostly a good thing, but it seems a little weak that they wouldn’t even give him a few new moves.

As for the amount of combat in the game, there’s a whole lot of it. Almost the whole game is focused around combat with barely any puzzles to be found. This is a little disappointing because the puzzles in God of War and God of War 2 were a great change in pace from the high intensity combat, but it does make sense because they probably assumed that people would want to play it in short bursts given that it is a handheld game. Thankfully though, the combat feels great just like the console versions. The attacks and combos look and feel quick and fluid just as you would want. The magic at Kratos’ disposal feels great as well. You’ll get new spells that you haven’t seen before, though they do act much like some you’ve seen in the past. And of top of all of that there is a new weapon you receive later in the game that makes you feel like even more of a badass than the Blades of Athena. Here’s to hoping it comes back for God of War 3. The puzzles on the other hand, are extremely disappointing. In the very rare case that you do run into one of them, you will find that it’s extremely simple and only takes a few moments to solve, giving you the impression that they didn’t put much time or effort into them.

The enemies you will be fighting in Chains of Olympus will be very familiar if you played through the first two titles. You’ll see undead wearing Spartan armor, giant Minotaur, sirens, and the like. But you’ll also see some new foes that I don’t want to mention here because I think they’re pretty neat to see for yourself. The best part about all of this is they all look fantastic. The games graphics look amazing coming close in comparison to the original God of War. It’s pretty amazing seeing these types of graphics on a handheld because they’re without a doubt the best on the system. And as is to be expected, game sounds just as good as it looks. Both Kratos and the narrator have the same voice actors as the console versions and deliver astounding performances on par with their earlier ones.

My biggest complaint with the game is its length. The story will take you around 5-6 hours to complete, which is pretty short even for a handheld game. This takes away from the overall experience because it makes it feel less epic in scale and doesn’t give you as much of a feeling of accomplishment once finished. But if you’re really craving more Chains of Olympus action, it’s filled with the standard bonus content you would expect such as the challenge of Hades which is very similar to challenge of the gods from the original games, as well as various unlockable movies and costumes which you can get by playing through the story mode again on harder difficulties giving you a little more incentive to go back and do it all over again.

Even though God of War: Chains of Olympus is short, it is action packed and one hell of a game. If you’re not a huge God of War fan, but you are looking for a reason to turn on your PSP, you might want to consider renting this one, but if you’re a huge God of War fan just aching for that next piece of Kratos goriness, the $40 price tag probably won’t bother you and this will definitely wet your appetite heling hold you over until the inevitable release of God of War 3.

Battlefield: Bad Company Review

When thinking about war, what usually comes to mind is soldiers getting down and dirty on the front lines fighting for their country. But what about fighting for themselves? Battlefield: Bad Company explores this idea by putting you in the shoes of a soldier accompanied by his three other squad members as they fight for wealth and freedom. But it doesn’t just do that. It does it with big, big explosions.

The newest installment in the Battlefield franchise drops you head first into the action by putting you into the shoes of a young soldier named Preston Marlowe who just joined Bad Company. Bad Company is a battalion of soldiers that are usually making up for their wrong doings in the past by serving the army instead of heading off to jail. Preston’s squad consists of himself, his tough as nails squad leader Redford, the greedy explosives expert Haggard, and the cautious tech guy Sweetwater. Each of these characters has their own distinct personalities with some great voice acting that give the serious scenarios you are put in some well appreciated comic relief.

Your squad starts out doing straight forward missions against the Russians assigned to you by your superiors, but things quickly head in a vastly different direction. You run into some soldiers that you don’t recognize and after killing them, you realize that they’re a rumored mercenary army with no shortage of gold. Greed soon sets in and your squad goes AWOL on their personal mission to find the trucks carrying the gold for their own gain.

Battlefield: Bad Company is the first game to use the new Frostbite engine, and it shows. Almost every wall in the environment is capable of blowing up in glorious fashion. This makes you think about cover a bit differently. If you see someone in a window with his head barely poking out, instead of taking careful aim and getting a headshot, you have the option of flipping up your grenade launcher sight and blasting half of the building to pieces along with your foe. And on top of all this, it all looks and sounds terrific.

Throughout the campaign, you’ll also run into some tougher enemies such as tanks, helicopters, and boats, but you need not worry because you’ll find some pretty handy gadgets to help take these down such as rocket launchers, C4, and even a laser designator to call in a user controlled air strike. The pace at which you’re introduced to these new gadgets feels just about right giving you something new to play with every so often.

But even with all of these glorious explosions, there are a few key things that bring the experience down a few notches. My main gripe is the fact that they omit a cooperative campaign. It seems with all of the camaraderie between the four main characters, that’s exactly how the campaign is meant to be played, yet there’s no coop to be found. Another thing that struck me as a bit odd was that there isn’t really a death penalty. When you die, you just spawn at your last checkpoint with all of the enemies you previously killed still dead. So you can just run into a warzone guns blazing, kill a couple dudes, then die knowing that you’ll spawn with full health 30 yards away from where you died. And if that didn’t make the game seem easy enough, dying is something that will rarely occur due to the games way of managing your health. Very early in the game you are introduced to your handy adrenaline filled syringe that if your health gets low, you can quickly jam into your chest and be back to full health. This wouldn’t be such a big deal because it’s a pretty nice change from the now standard regenerating health system seen in most games, but the syringe recharges so quick that you’ll rarely need to use it when it’s not ready. Both the lack of death penalty and adrenaline syringe really bring down both the difficulty and believability of the game.

But thankfully, they didn’t forget to include a very satisfying online experience. All of the great explosions, guns, and gold carry over to the online play with grace. The online mode is called Gold Rush, in which you are either an attacker or a defender. The attacker’s goal is to blow up the defender’s two gold crates, and the defenders goal is obviously to defend those crates. If the attackers blow up the two crates, then two more crates spawn in a different location and the attackers must then blow up those followed by one more pair. Once the attackers blow up the first two crates, reinforcements are sent and same with the second pair. But if the defenders manage to defend their crates, the attacker’s respawn meter will deplete giving the defenders the victory. This all feels just right with the player cap at 24 which makes the battles seem pretty large in scale.

The online multiplayer also brings in the same sort of ranking up and weapon acquisition that games like Call of Duty 4 have. As you rank up, you will gain credits to spend on a slew of unlockables such as new guns, gadgets, and health rechargers that will give you the edge in battle. This progressive system has proved successful in the past for keeping players coming back and this is no exception.

Where Bad Company really shines is in the over the top nature of everything along with the great online multiplayer. While it does have some minor flaws, Battlefield: Bad Company is a game I’d recommend to anyone looking for a great first person shooter experience with massive, glorious explosions.
