This post relates to: Tales of Vesperia

Read the review on IGN and I was really intrigued, so I bought the game when it came out a week or two ago, and I have to say that I am really enjoying the game.  I have only clocked in about two to three hours in the game, but just from that short play time I can tell that I am really gonna enjoy this game and I feel like I will clock at least 60 hours on this game.  First of all, if you are an anime fan then you will just die when you see this game, the cel-shaded graphics are just amazing (Namco-Bandai just do amazing things with cel-shading in any of their games) and the anime cut scenes and intro in the game are just awesome (I woudln't be suprised if they made an anime series out of this show (and it wouldn't be the first time either, just look at Blue Dragon).

Anyway, I just thougth I would tell you guys my first impressions of the game, but I don't want to give too much away because I should have a full review coming later in the month once I finish the game.

This post relates to: Xbox Live, Xbox 360, Silicon Knights, Inc., Too Human

I went into playing too human a little skeptical because I had read most of the reviews online for the game and they were almost all less than spectacuar and bashed down pretty hard on the game, but nevertheless I went out and bought the game.  i had so much fun with the demo that I couldn't let the game pass me by.

The Good

The Combat -
I have to say that I really love the combat in this game.  Althought it may seem very simple at face value, there really is some skill to it.  All you do is hold the right analog stick where you want to attack and the game will automatically lock on to the nearest enemy and bring you too them.  This may seem easy, but if you intend on staying alive as long as possible then you have to work on your timing, and sometimes is can be a real callenge with hoards of enemies are crowding around you.

The Loot - I have to say that after playing this game, I have become a loot JUNKIE.  I keep playing and playing trying to find new and better armor, weapons, and blueprints.  The game has just so much of these weapons and armor that your caracters look is constantly changing and you are constantly using a variety of different weapons.  This is a defintely a big plus when playing on line because both people playing online are playing as their character in the game, and this loot system enables almost virtually every character that you encounter to look different.

The Setting - The setting and this whole Cyber-Norse theme was a really great choice on the part of Silicon Knights.  It is new, interesting, and great to look at.  At times the game can look Halo-ish, but overall it works in the games' favor.

The Graphics - This game my not be Uncharted or MSG4, but the game does look good.  The character models are nicely done, and the character animations seem to move very smoothly.  The backgorund of the game and the your character's armor and weapons have a great amount of detail in them.  There may be some room for improvement here, but the game is no slouch either.

The Bad

The Story -
To me the story was just bland.  Like I said above, I like the whole Cyber-Norse setting, I just don't like the narrative that takes place around it.  I felt like I was watching a futuristic Viking soap opera.  I just never really got invested in the characters enough to care.  Plus there were only really storyline elements in-between the longer gameplay levels, so I kind of lost interest in the story everytime I went to a new level.

Death Valkyries of Doom - Every single time you die in Too Human you have to watch an uskipable cutscent that depicts a Cyber-Valkyrie come down from the sky and take you away to some Norse God paradise where they reivie you and throw you about 30 feet away from where you were taken away.  This cut-scene lasts about 15 seconds and is the MOST ANNOYING part of the game, literally.

No Death Penalty - On top of the unskippable death cut-scene, you don't even have any pentalty for death (well that is if you don't call the horrendous cut-scene a penalty).  You just pop back up in the game with all your experience intact and you just keep on playing and playing no matter how many times you may die.  Now, for some this may seem like a pro instead of a con, but to me it doesn't give the player a reason to want to live in the game, and spoiled the game just a little, but I just played like their was a penalty (and really there was *coughdeathcutscenecough*).

Despite the minor annoyances of Too Human, it is an insanely fun and addictive game.  I caught myself playing it for 4 or 5 hours at a time, and I never play games for periods of that long.  I reccomend this game for any Xbox 360 owner who wants a long distraction until their most anticipated fall game comes out.

I just bought Geometry Wars 2 Retro Evolved last week and Braid this week, and I've got to say that those two games are the best two games that I have played on all of the Xbox Live Arcade.  And let me tell you for 800 MS points Geometry Wars 2 is a steal, and for 1200 MS points Braid is worth every penny!  If you have chance you need to buy these two game.

First off, I played the original Geometry Wars right when I first bought my Xbox 360 about two years ago, and it instantly became a favorite of mine but I still felt like the experience was a bit empty.  The original game was a nice touch, but it still felt like it was only one note, but with the sequel there are six awesome modes and they kept me entertained for soooo many hours.  My favorite mode is probably Waves, Evolved, and Deadline, and the rest not so much, but they still are fun.  I've been killing myself trying to get the wax off achievement that I don't even care about the rest of them.  I haven't gotten it yet, but I've gotten really close, so hopefully soon.

And Braid is CRAZY, the game plays so awesome.  It feels so retro in style, but so new in game play.  The puzzles can be REALLY challenging.  I mean some of the are pretty easy to figure out, but hard to do, but then others are hard to figure out, but then once you get it, you are like "wow that was simple, how did I not figure that out sooner".  The game is just so rewarding once you figure out the answer to puzzles.  You just feel so smart and cool, and whatever, lol.  Just go buy it. lol

Anyway, I've just been having sooo much fun with these game I just had to write about it.

This post relates to: What videogame franchise took the biggest turn for the worse?

There has not been a descent NEW Donkey Kong game since Rare's Donkey Kong 64.  He has had the bongo games, the Nintendo Party games, the Country remakes on the GBA, the Barrel Blast game on the Wii, and the DK: King of Swing/Jungle Climber games.  While some of those games aren't bad and some of them are REALLY bad, they never lived up to the game play style of the Country and Land series' and Donkey Kong 64.

WHEN WILL WE GET A TRUE SEQUEL IN THE DONKEY KONG FRANCHISE!?!?

Another Pokemon Skinned Puzzle Game

Another platform, another Pokemon skinned puzzle game.  Now this may be very similar to the Pokemon Puzzle League games of the past but with the new touch controls of the Nintendo DS it brings new life to a game that would have been stale otherwise.  Basically, you just need to match up three or more of the same type of Pokemon heads and keep doing that and try to rack up as many points as possible without the heads building up all the way to the top of the screen.  While this game may not appeal to the typical puzzle gaming crowed, if you are a Pokemon fan, then this is a game that you need to pick up.

The Best Version of the Game

Usually, it is the licensed games that are on the bottom of the video game food chain, but on the Game Boy Advance, it seems to be the exact opposite.  The console version of the game felt shallow and empty, but this version is action packed with a classic feel that will satisfy older, younger, hardcore, and casual gamers alike.  The game plays very similar to the older Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle games to appeal to the older hardcore players, and the linear gameplay will appeal to younger and casual gamers.  For a classic feel and tons of mutant turtle action then you need to try this game out.

Legos Were Never THIS Much Fun

I always played with legos as a kid, and I have to say that playing the Lego games bring back a lot of those old memories.  I may not be as familiar with the Indiana Jones franchise as the Star Wars franchise, but I have to say I had just as much fun playing this Lego iteration as I did the previous Star Wars ones.

Now largely the game play seems to have remained unchanged, and for me that is not a bad thing at all.  That is not to say that the game is perfect.  Because this is just a scaled down version of its console counterparts, some objects may be harder to see.  Also another minor complaint is that most of the combat is all hand to hand.  Any gun you pick up, unlike blasters in Lego Star Wars, run out of ammo.  I know that adds a sort of realism to the game, but hey, it's my review.

Overall, the game has the same charm as the Lego Star Wars game, but doesn't quite make it as high as those games did.  Hopefully when Lego Batman releases, the series will redeem itself.

Goku Delivers With This Portbale Adventure

While Dragon Ball Z games a popping up everywhere these days on every single platform known to man (I even saw a DBZ game on a TI-83 graphing calculator) there have been a shortage of games from the series that started it all: Dragon Ball.  Just like the Dragon Ball Z game, Dragon Ball: Advanced Adventure follows the story of anime pretty closely.  It follows Goku and his friends on the search for the mystical Dragon Balls and his fights against the evil baddies along the way.

Now unlike previous Dragon Ball Z iterations on the Game Boy Advance, this game does not take a top down perspective.  However, this game is a side-scrolling action game.  You play as Goku and you wield you fits, feet, power pole, and the mighty Kamehameha wave.  Basically you just keep moving forward beating everyone you see in sight, and this can get a little repetitive, but the boss battles seem to make up for that.

This game may seem shallow at first glance, but for a GBA game it is the perfect game.  The game play is in short portable bursts so that you are not stuck in front of that tiny screen for hours at a time.  If you are a fan of the Dragon Ball franchise or retro arcade beat-em-up's then I definitely recommend this game to you.
