There, I said it!
Reason: The game shows nothing new to the game industry or the shooter genre itself. Gears of War1 introduced a golden rule that many games, afterwords, have followed--Take cover or die. Because of this, Gears of War1 won most of the GotY awards of 2006.
GeoW2 does nothing more except add some pointless gameplay mechanics, guns, and tweaks. GeoW2 didn't try to be innovative like it's predecessor, it tried to please the fans of the previous game; which is fine! But really though, GeoW2 is overrated enough to an area where people are expecting a freaking GotY Nominee to be given to the game. It's just insane.
Personally, games like Braid, Dead Space, and Left 4 Dead deserve the GotY category because they do something new and nail the newity. CoD4, winner of 2007 Game of the Year from almost every single publiation, had an addictive ranking system; modern setting and weaponary; and perks. Sure, some of these things have been done before, but when Infinitywerd inserted the brisk, simplistic style of the CoD franchise; it intertwined so well that it became an innovative masterpiece. Even games today try to immitate CoD4's multiplayer, showing proof of how successful the game was.
Now I am not trying to change minds here. You have your own opinion as do I. It's just I personally think GeoW2 doesn't deserve GotY. It's not a bad game by no means. It's a phenomenal retake of Gears of War1 with an epic single-player campaign and an addictive multiplayer (and lets not forget Horde); but it just adds nothing new in the franchise, the genre, and the game industry in general. That, in itself, is simply why GeoW2 doesn't take the golden award.
That is all.

Holy shit. Just when I thought the concept was about a bad-ass scientist murdering some aliens and soldiers, then meeting up with a rebel alliance to murder even more aliens and soldiers. But in the process of that, he meets a blue-suited dude that tells the bad-ass scientist that he's useful and that he's a great employee.
YOU TRIGGERD MAH TRAP CARD!
I played Half-Life1. I know the concept of that story was based on Area51-ish government conspiracies. But seriously; just the whole concept that you, a lone scientist, accidentally ripped the fabric of the space-time continuum, unleashing a force far greater then any other being in any other universe has ever known, is enslaving Humanity; and we are not the only species that has been enslaved in the multiverses...
And you must stop the multiverse's enslavers with a fucking crowbar.
Genius.
According to the Combine article, the main enslavers of Humanity are those
slug things. Now that you closed the rim between our universe and
their universe in Half-Life2: Episode2, the slugs are angry and they want to kill you and open the portal again, continuing the enslavement of Humanity and many other universes to come.
Episode3, you're going to fucking end it. You're going to see what the Gman wants and stop the greatest force in the history of existence...
Yet again, with a crowbar.
Genius.

No, I am dead serious.
- Me and my team matched up with each other WITHOUT AN ENEMY TEAM. Yeah, you just read that. We all got a free victory, but it's still very screwed up.
- After finally getting into a match, the host leaves and the match ends.
- It takes a bitch of a long time to get matched up.
- After the amazing matchmaking that CoD4 has shown to the table, how come no game is copying it? People can enter matches in progress, people can leave without disrupting the match, and there was rarely any lag disruption at all. How come other games can't have the same thing?!
This is just four bullets of what makes the matchmaking in GeoW2 so abysmal. I really thought Halo3's matchmaking was bad, but GeoW2 takes the shit-and-piss cake. I know this is Epic's first temptation for matchmaking multiplayer, so I'll give them that. I hope that they improve in GeoW3 (which I bet will be made).
Oh, and another tidbit: The shotgun is still a dominant weapon compared to the Lancer. Stopping power doesn't stop players from blowing your body into gibes. The range of the shotgun is long enough to make you go down.
So really, I think Halo3 still takes the cake in console multiplayer action. Come on, devs! Show some passion in your games!
