Dir en grey - Uroboros
Hey everyone! Usagi is back! :D

The greatest band on the planet, Dir en grey, has released their seventh full-length album this past week!  Uroboros is here and it is markedly better than 2007's The Marrow of a Bone.  Not that TMoaB is bad by any stretch, I just felt it was a small step backward for them.  I think the overall best track is Vinushka which is a 9+ minute epic!  Other standouts include: Glass Skin, Dozing Green, Red Soil, and Doukoku to Sarinu (慟哭と去りぬ).  Check out the Uroboros page on Last.fm to listen to a number of the tracks and decide for yourself!

I still can't say anything specific regarding the Killzone 2 beta, but I will say that if the full game is as polished and as great as the beta, expect it to be one of the best of 2009.  I'm looking forward to it more now thanks to the beta!

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is out next week for both systems!  PS3 is on Tuesday (because of Thanksgiving weekend) and X360 on Wednesday!  Get hype!

Make my attacks meaty!

This post relates to: Killzone 2, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, Resistance 2, Mirror's Edge, LittleBigPlanet, My Japanese Coach, Yakuza 2

  • I finished Yakuza 2 about a week ago and even though it is very similar mechanically, gameplay, and visually to the first one, which disappointed me at first, it was still a very satisfying experience that anybody remotely interested in an action adventure set in Japan will surely love!  Shenmue is remembered fondly by a lot of people and if you liked that, you will certainly enjoy the Yakuza series and is a must play.
  • I picked up and started taking a look a My Japanese Coach for DS.  Seems to be a pretty good supplement for learning the Japanese language.  I think it relies a little to much on using romaji in place of the kanas which can be a problem, but it isn't a big enough of a problem to worry about if you are thinking about giving this title a shot.  One of my favorite things about it is the ability to use the touch screen to practice writing the characters.
  • LittleBigPlanet has been with me for a week now and I really am loving the creativity of the game and I am very impressed with the depth of the level creator.  The best things about this game is checking out what the community has created and playing online with others.  My least favorite things are the less than precise jumping and the lack of much to do from a gameplay perspective other than running, jumping, and grabbing onto things.  LBP is game that every PS3 owner needs in their collection regardless of its flaws because it is simply something that doesn't exist for any other platform out there and it is a whole lot of fun too!
  • The Mirror's Edge demo amazed me far more than I could have ever expected!  I thought that the first-person perspective would take away from the experience and make it tough to judge jumps and such, but to my surprise it was the very thing that added so much to the experience.  It really did feel like you were doing those things the character was doing!  I'm definitely looking forward to this game now and I hope to be able to get it before the end of the year.
  • The Resistance 2 beta sold me on the game.  The multiplayer seems to be the best thing going for it.  Playing the co-op was easily the best multiplayer mode and was a ton of fun when you were with a good sized team that worked together and played their classes well.  If you have a team that isn't playing correctly, then it can seem nearly impossible to complete a mission.  I played medic most of the time and maxed out at lv. 10 in the beta with the class.  The medic may be the weakest on offense, but once you level up enough to use abilities like the Chloroform berserk powerup, you can really be a huge help for your team on offense.
  • I also picked up Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia which I haven't started playing yet because of something that just came up...
  • That something would be entry into the Killzone 2 beta!  Just hours ago I checked my email and up popped an email stating I am in the KZ2 beta even though I didn't know anything about it and thus could not have tried to sign up for it.  It was just there and I don't know why, but I immediately downloaded and started playing it.  I can't say anything about my experiences with it since Sony seems to have participants agree that they will not divulge information about their experiences with it outside of the official KZ2 forums--at least as far as I know.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat (DS) review

Ultimate Mortal Kombat for DS has arrived and it is a compilation of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Puzzle Kombat from Mortal Kombat Deception and both are now on the go and still online.

Anyone who is thinking about picking this up already knows what the draw is here: Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on the go and with online multiplayer. Anybody else who wonders what the fuss is about need not apply. Single player experience is non-existent too since the usual impossible to beat CPU fighters after you win three times are back to read your mind once again. Puzzle Kombat is back and is still online as well, but it is merely a slight diversion from the real game here and is an uglier version of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo and less fun to play as well.

As far as UMK3 online, it is easy to get into matches and you play the same opponent back to back as many times as you want and as long as your network connection isn't being clogged up, latency issues won't be too much of a problem.

Conclusion: UMK3 online is the reason to get this and it controls well and performs admirably online too. If that is what you are looking for, then be sure to pick it up!

Erementar Gerad (PS2) review

Erementar Gerad is a fighting game based on an anime/manga series of the same name and it is about as average as you can get.

This game is a 3D cel-shaded fighter that has decent graphics and good sound, specifically the voice acting and music standout here, but the sound effects are very standard. Everything else about this game is very archaic as far as 3D fighters go. In order to sidestep you have to press L1 or L2 depending on which direction you want to go and the combo system is made up completely of mostly unimpressive canned combos with little to no room for improvising your own.

In the end, Erementar Gerad is clearly only for fans of the series and all others should just stay away.

Game Center CX: Arino no Chousenjou (DS) review

Game Center CX: Arino no Chousenjou is based on the popular Japanese video game show, Game Center CX. It stars comedian Shinya Arino who tries throughout an episode to complete a video game, typically from the Famicom (NES) and Super Famicom (SNES). Hilarious antics ensue when Arino reacts to his defeats and triumphs over these typically difficult games.

This DS game attempts to recreate the feeling of the 8-bit Nintendo days with eight games that were specifically created for this title. All eight games have multiple influences from existing games.

PRESENTATION: 5.0
Every effort was made to create the Famicom feel with these games and it shows. These games really do look, sound, and feel like games that could have come out back in the 1980s. The whole game is wrapped in a story of sorts that sees you being transported back to the 1980s along with Arino, both of you as kids and being challenged by "Demon Arino" to complete specific tasks in each of these games. It's safe to say that this game's concept is pretty crazy!

SOUND: 4.0
Famicom-esque music and sound effects largely permeate the game as you'd expect and most of it is pretty good, but still short of being truly memorable.

GAMEPLAY: 4.0
Not only did the developers get the feel right, but the gameplay is also spot on with actual 8-bit Nintendo games and the games are largely very fun. The main mode is where you will be tackling the challenges Demon Arino gives you. Each game has four challenges that must be done in the order assigned and once they are completed the next game will be unlocked and the current game completed will be able to be played outside of the main mode in its entirety, complete with high score boards. The challenges mostly consist of goals like 'Clear stage 5' in Cosmic Gate, 'Score 250,000 points' in Star Prince, and 'Finish course 2 in under 2'28"' in Rally King SP. The game even gives you, at intervals, game magazines of the time with helpful information about the games, cheat codes, and more!

LASTING APPEAL: 4.0
It won't take most people too terribly long to complete the challenges and after that most of the time spent will be trying to best your high scores.

OVERALL: 4.5
You don't need to know anything about the Game Center CX show to enjoy this game. The real requirement to enjoying it is whether or not you are fond of 8-bit Nintendo games. If the answer is yes, then pick this one up!

Cosmic Race (PS1) review

Cosmic Race is as bad as your mind will allow you to comprehend and then it is even worse than that!

PRESENTATION: 1.0

Cosmic Race came out for the PlayStation in January of 1995, a full eight months before the system even hit North America and already the worst game on the system was already out in Japan!

GRAPHICS: 1.0

The graphics look like they came from the original PlayStation SDK minimally altered and slapped into the game.

SOUND: 1.0

The music is so forgettable that even after I have played this game way more than it deserves to be played, I still can't remember it at all! The sound effects are virtually nonexistent.

GAMEPLAY: 1.0

You actually use the four face buttons for steering your craft far more than the d-pad! Enough said!

LASTING APPEAL: 1.0

Clearly there is absolutely no lasting appeal here as the game is mind numbingly boring within minutes of the first race!

Contra 4 (DS) review

Presentation: 5
The moment you reach the title screen and hear the classic, but reworked Contra title screen music, you know it's totally on like its the late 1980s all over again! There are also lots of homages to earlier Contra games in the level design, enemies, and bosses that will make Contra fans squeal with glee!

Graphics: 4
While good, the graphics won't blow you away, even for DS standards. Don't let that worry you though since they are still very good and highly resemble Contra III's graphics expect much cleaner looking. Contra 4 definitely has the "Contra look."

Sound: 5
Where the graphics lack a bit, the music more than makes up for it. From the previously mentioned title screen melody to the amazing familiar-but-new stage music, it will be very satisfying to any Contra fan. If you play on the hard difficulty setting, then you'll hear 100% true-to-the-original stage music which is a nice touch.

The sound effects are also like you would expect, with explosions and gun fire sounding appropriately 16-bit, but with some nice added oomph. They even added voice-over samples when you die and then respawn with lines like, "Let's party!," "Locked and loaded!," and "Come get some!" The only thing bad I can say about the sound is the effect for the machine gun. It is far to "pew, pew" sounding for me, but otherwise the SFX are great.

Gameplay: 4
If anything comes to mind about this game, it is this: "Contra 4 is ****ing hard!!" It takes balls of steel to play this game! No pansies allowed! I am dead ****ing serious! If you haven't played a Contra game before and are wondering if you should get this game, my advice is don't bother. Unless you are used to or don't mind punishing old-school styIe games, this won't appeal to you. Contra 4 plays like the previous 2D Contra games, end of story.

Lasting Appeal: 4
It'll surely take you a good long while to be able even finish this game on normal as the easy difficulty level will only let you play through 7 of the 9 stages with no ending. The Challenge Mode is also something that will keep you occupied for awhile too. This mode is were you unlock secrets such as developer interviews, Contra promo comics, and even the NES version of Contra and Super C!

OVERALL: 4.5
Contra 4 would make even Chuck Norris weep like a little baby! Contra fans should pick this one up immediately, but all others will likely wonder what all the fuss is about.

SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 (PSP) review

PRESENTATION: 2 out of 5
This compilation has a very basic and mostly generic menu system to select your games from. None of it looks particularly great, but it isn't bottom of the barrel either. The loading times are also a little on the long side, especially when initially booting the game. There is also a small problem with not being able to save the setting for the aspect ratio. All other settings will save and load later on as expected, but the aspect ratio setting will never save for some reason and always be at the default when you load the game later.

GRAPHICS: 5 out of 5
All of the games have precisely the same visuals you expect from them. Perfectly emulated.

SOUND: 4 out of 5
All sounds, music and sound effects, are accounted for and emulated well except for a few here and there.

GAMEPLAY: 3 out of 5
As with any compilation, some games have aged well better than others. Having said that, nostalgia can go a long way to making it more enjoyable than it would otherwise be. For instance, I know Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, and World Heroes don't hold up so well anymore, but since I was pretty big into these games at the time of their release, they can still be decent fun. I was surprised to find that many of them hold up better than I expected, like Baseball Stars 2, Last Resort, Top Hunter, and Neo Turf Masters. The titles that stand out the most are: Metal Slug, Samurai Shodown, Shock Troopers, and King of Fighters '94.

LASTING APPEAL: 4 out of 5
Obviously, the amount of lasting value you will get out of this compilation is directly related to your affinity for the games within. I enjoy most of the games in this compilation, even the admittedly not-so-great ones.

OVERALL: 3.5 out of 5
This is a much better compilation that I thought it would be and if you are a SNK/Neo-Geo fan, this is totally worth picking up!
