There have never been fewer barriers to learning how to code. If you can create a post on Giant Bomb, you can go to http://www.codecademy.com right now and start learning web development.

This is a fantastic resource. Code Academy helped me a lot with early lessons.

If your interests lie in game design and you've never coded, I highly recommend downloading Stencyl too. While the main page says "without code," that isn't entirely true. What Stencyl provides is an easy-to-understand GUI for any code. It's a great tool for people just starting out.

I think video games should be whatever the people developing them want them to be. Whether that be a sobering emotional experience or a fun shootem up, I think there's room for everything.

Nailed it. I think of games as a medium. They can be used to create something for fun, but they're also excellent tools for self-expression, satire, cultural critique; whatever the designer seeks to create.

A Bartleby the Scrivener joke in the headline. That's somewhere high up on the "reasons to love giantbomb" list.

I'm really enjoying these articles every week, especially the crazy artsy indie games. Thanks Patrick!

Reading metacritic user reviews is an exercise in endurance. The negative Bastion user reviews were filled to the brim with misinformation and lies about the games controls and plot.

While a website where everyone can pitch in their own scores is a great idea in theory, its flawed in practice when idiots who never take the time to actually play the game (or at least click the options menu) decide they're allowed to put in their own two cents.

So I checked it out. The silly tile game reminds me of triple triad from Final Fantasy 8, minus the myriad of annoying rules. Kinda fun. Not sure if I learned much about death in the two hours I've spent with it though.

Afraid I'm with DeF on this one. Most of it sounds great, but there were a few sections here or there that sounded a tad off key.

Still, kudos to you for creating and sharing. I wouldn't even know how to begin to do something like this.

" In the original Half-Life, the vortigaunts were these super-annoying little alien guys with a nasty electrical charge attack, and then in Half-Life 2 they're like your best friends and voiced by Louis Gossett, jr.  WTF?  Did Valve ever explain this? "
The combine attacked the vortigaunts forcing them to buddy up with humans at which point they found out that humans are actually OK and not just dudes out to kill them all the time. I love how this is referenced in the Gman's line "When their only experience of humanity was a crowbar coming at them down a steel corridor." "
Ah! That makes sense. I forgot about that. Thanks!

@Ubik: Theoretically speaking, I think they were under the control of The Nihilanth (that ugly nightmarish boss at the end of half-life). Killing that hideous nightmare fuel is what freed them, and then they joined the resistance.I don't know that valve ever explained that very well in the HL2 series though, since I can't remember a moment where I learned that. I just kind of assumed that was the reason.
