Guess who's rocking a PS3 now!

Future purchase number one
Future purchase number one
It was going to happen eventually. I've known for over a year now that eventually, I'd be forced to break down and buy a PS3. The timing is nothing but coincidence; nothing at E3 swayed me to buy one. In fact, it's really Nintendo's fault that I bought one, and not for the reason you're probably thinking.
I stopped into the local games store today to pick up Sin and Punishment 2. It was one of the last games left on my "Buy Next List", a list that encompasses all the games I want currently available for the consoles that I own (along with Silent Hill 2 and 3, Fatal Frame IV, and as of tomorrow, Valkyria Chronicles 2). I figured I'd be going in to buy one or two games at most and be walking out with an overall good day. But just by chance, I started asking the clerk if he had some stuff I really didn't expect him to have. First I asked if he had gotten Valkyria Chronicles 2 in early. That was a negatory. Then I asked about a Street Fighter IV fight pad. He had one, but it was Sagat. Then, because I've been looking for one for a while, I asked if he had a backwards compatible PS3, not really expecting a yes. To my surprise, the answer was a good one. 350 bucks for the assurance of a working console without having to hassle with Ebay sure seemed like a really good deal, especially since my PS2 had been camping out at a friends house for the better part of a year (and will probably stay there now).
The first game to call my PS3 home
The first game to call my PS3 home
The backwards compatible part was the most important for me. I have a sizable backlog of PS2 games that I haven't even touched yet, and was without a console to play them on. And who wants to have four consoles to switch between? Not this guy.
So right now, I'm a PS3 owner with no PS3 games. That will likely change come next paycheck, but until then, I've got plenty to get through on it. Metal Gears, Personas, Final Fantasies, Devil May Cries, Xenosagas, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and a bunch of other random RPGs and Fighters. Not to mention my PS1 backlog.
But as for what I'll be picking up for the PS3 in the coming months, here's my list. I've looked very carefully at each of the games available, and have a pretty good understanding of what I will be interested in.
  • Valkyria Chronicles
  • Heavy Rain
  • Metal Gear Solid 4
  • Final Fantasy XIII
  • White Knight Chronicles
  • Infamous
  • Sly Cooper Collection
  • Uncharted/Uncharted2
You're more than welcome to recommend more, but it truly was hard for me to come up with games I wanted beyond the first 3.

I'll second that.  Based on your PS2 games you might want to give it a try.

Also, if you like GoW1 and 2 (from your list) you will like 3.  It's more of the same.
Disgaea 3 maybe, since it looks like you're into SRPGs and Japanese games.

@AgentJ: It's action oriented, but it's deeper than Fable.  There are 2 demos on PSN I think.

And if I haven't liked God of War much? And Disgaea is out of the question. the first is like torture for me.

If you didn't like them much then avoid 3, since they are all so similar.

Fancy that, I just went and got my own PS3 the other day, the Killzone 2 and God of War Collection bundle. Thankfully one of my friends has a lot of games to lend me too. And now that I went out today to buy all the cables I needed to get my PS3 running on my HD computer monitor I am in heaven.

I'll... consider Demons Souls. I get very tired and frustrated when I'm not making any progress though. Thats why I haven't picked up Disgaea in forever...

I forgot about Demon's Souls.  It is a lot different and more simple than Disgaea.  It's difficulty doesn't come from a ton of confusing options but from not being observant or precise with your attacks and movements.  I could see someone who likes fighting games and RPGs getting pretty into it.  Rent/borrow it and check it out.

It's $150 plus tax.
I'm wondering whether or not it comes with a renewed warranty, or if there is a way to get a renewed warranty.

Your transgression is forgiven.

I'm a big admirer of Level-5. I strongly consider Dragon Quest VIII as one of the best PS2 games period.
At the same time they're have been reoccurring "issues" with their games, specifically: making a storyline that stands out on it's own in their JRPGs. (You can imagine my excitement with their recent collaboration with Studio Ghibli.)

Skimming through some of the reviews for WKC illustrate some issues I've read before. I might pick it up later, but probably in the bargain-bin.

I know a lot of people respect the backwards compatible PS3, but I'm thinking about waiting for the Move Bundle with the slim. Playing Resident Evil 5 for the first time with Move seems like a lot of fun. Good gaming.

No interest in the Move on my end. The cost of buying four of those wands on top of the control pad add-ons and camera, when I'm more concerned about getting more standard controllers first, is just too much for what I perceive as a small return. After all, how many developers are really going to make games for a peripheral that demanding? With the Wii everyone already has the controllers, but with the PS3 you're asking everyone to buy all new crap. Thats why things like the Motion Plus haven't taken off.
That said, wand controlled resident evil 5 does sound fun.

Wii Sports Resort has probably sold over 16 million, so I would believe that many more Motion Plus attachments are out there. I blame the developers, most regular users have Motion Plus and want more. Plus, I hear they're coming.

Move seems cool to me. With it being so much like the Wii controls, I can see developers adding it to existing games. You know, as an option. The price doesn't bother me, buy the bundle, a game, the joystick/nunchuk thingy. Having the option of Move support seems cool for a first time PS3 owner, well, that's my plan.

No, you're absolutely right. It IS the developers fault, and thats exactly what I'm saying. No one wants to make a game for a peripheral when the lack of that peripheral means lack of an audience. Same was true with the wii balance board. It would have to be near a 1-2 ratio (very least 1-3) of wii owners to balance board owners to get developers to be serious about developing for it, putting in the resources to make their games compatible. I don't blame them; In a market as volatile as the gaming industry, putting manpower on features that the majority of the console owners won't be using is a dangerous prospect.

I made the mistake of ordering a used backwards-compatible PS3 from Gamestop.  It arrived.  It didn't work.  Go figure, right?  Long story short, I ended up buying a non-BC PS3, and now have a huge stack of PS2 games I can't play because family asked me if they could buy my old PS2, and now I don't have the cash or the room for one.  Eh, I'll pick one up eventually, but for now, it's pretty frustrating to have forty or so games I can't play.

You "Ordered" it? Online? Seems to me that was the mistake. Or maybe I just got lucky with a working one. I've been playing Odin Sphere much of the afternoon and no problems so far. Thankfully.

Yup.  Online.  I know, I know - horrible, horrible mistake.  What's funny is that I usually never buy stuff used unless I absolutely have to or it's at a deeply discounted price (and even then, I usually only trust one shop because I know the owner).  But this time, impatience won out over my common sense.  Damn it.  Anyways, it's not like PS2's are going anywhere soon.  When I land another job and get a bigger place, I'll be able to get myself hooked up again.

Nope. Takes something pretty special for me to enjoy a FPS, and those usually have strong elements of other genres (Fallout 3, Bioshock, Metroid Prime)

Demon's Souls for sure. It's not nearly as hard as people make it out to be.

I'll... consider Demons Souls. I get very tired and frustrated when I'm not making any progress though. Thats why I haven't picked up Disgaea in forever... "
I'm like that too, but there's something about Demon's Souls that doesn't make me hate it. I have NO patience with games, I'm the type of person who plays them on Easy because I just want to enjoy them. But seriously, as hard as Demon's Souls is (and it is hard), you can't really hate it. It's also a little bit brilliant.

Sorry, I already have it... For the 360
I will be buying it again, but not for the PS3. (See: 3DS)
