GTA 3 showed me how much fun a sandbox can be. The game presents a familiar but comically morbid world in which we can run around like a psychopath. Only by watching someone else play do you see how insane it all is.

My first exposure to a legitimately scary game - I frightened myself something awful the first time I took an elevator up to a switch only to get an imp fireball to the face. The space marine tropes straight out of aliens permeated gaming after the release of this game.
