I fully endorse Planetside 2 and I can't wait

The perfect multiplayer gaming heaven illustrated in one screenshot.
The perfect multiplayer gaming heaven illustrated in one screenshot.
I won't give in to the hype just yet, but watching several lengthy gameplay and commentary videos, I think I have found the game that will provide the massive shooter experience I've been trying to have with this community ever since I started organizing bombing runs and gamenights in Bad Company 2 and ArmA 2 and Battlefield 3 among other games.
Personally, I think gaming heaven is a PC multiplayer shooter that supports a large number of people and consists of large sophisticated maps that provide a variety of terrains and complex establishments which allow complex game modes with objectives that have a team-based  significance  to them, maps where vehicles and stationary weapons and gadgets and destruction all work together to create a believable world.

Ever since I stumbled upon Battlefield 2  in mid 2008 and joined a clan that gave me the best teamplay-driven virtual combat and fun in my life, I've been trying to find a similar game that allows that mindblowing scope and teamwork to take place, and it looks like it's going to be Planetside 2.
It's a truly surreal experience to spawn at a point, push your mouse forward a bit, and gaze upon the infinite-feeling acres of land stretching in a virtual world around you. it is surreal to be standing there and to see tanks and jeeps and choppers drive or fly across the roads and skies of the map stretching before your eyes. Surreal to see real people running around that land squadding up, doing stunts in one corner or picking a fight in another, capturing a flag or blowing up enemy assets, all happening in real time as you sit there with your jaw dropped to your desk.

This is my dream, my passion. This is why I organize these gamenights and keep them alive, always looking out for new games that will provide such a surreal experience, but since my Battlefield 2 days, no other game could compare.
And then Battlefield 3 was announced. I thought that, once again, after all those years, it will happen. I thought that surreal, open-ended virtual adventure will begin again in an all new chapter, and with my Giantbomb friends by my side, no less.  I pushed for it to become a reality with all my heart. And hundreds of people signed up, and we rented our own max capacity server that had some of the best moments and matches this community has had together. But sadly, while the game is a lot of fun, it has proven that DICE have been brainwashed by EA and that they're making games for the publicity and money, not for the fun. They're designing virtual drugs that are intended to cause addiction, not a real BATTLEFIELD where gaming memories will be created and forever remembered.
They're designing games that are meant to expire after 6 months, not live on for years to come. All the DLC in the world won't get the sour taste of Battlefield 3's cheap disgraceful map and weapon design from my mouth.

And just when I was losing the last drop of hope in that broken clusterF of a game, Planetside 2 came along riding on a white horse in the night, and promised me what I had thought was an experience stuck in the past, never to be experienced again in a new title.

But being the realistic gamer that I am, I can't help but keep thinking that it'll probably be severely flawed (technically), one way or another. The shooting might feel like total shit. The world and its objectives or quests might get boring really quick. They might try to imitate Battlefield 3 and lose all kinds of purpose in the process. The lag and latency of the fact that its an MMOFPS might make it unplayable. Etc...
But a man can dream. And my dream is that Planetside 2, being in Alpha testing now and going into Beta testing and having all the attention and support and hard work of its developer, is going to suffer from issues but come out on top, victorious and kicking ass sideways.

And so, in the case of this game actually turning out to be a solid, balanced and polished MMOFPS that won't come out as a broken wreck of game code trash, I'd like to announce that I will be dropping the Battlefield 3 server and will endorse Planetside 2 and push very hard for it to become the go-to online shooter for the PC community of Giant Bomb.

I will leave you with Total Biscuit who will show you just a taste of Planetside 2's groundbreaking brilliance.
Dynamic real-time weather and time change allow servers to switch from daytime to nighttime while the server's running. This video shows how REAL and dark the night time is in Planetside 2.
Just imagine what you're seeing being polished into a Golden build and played by hundreds of people in the masses of land in front of you. Just. Amazing.

The original Planetside is one of my all time favourite games and instead of watching E3 interviews on gamespot/spike, I spent the whole time watching the Planetside 2 livestream.

The first game was my reason for dropping out of college, the sequel is going to cost me my job.

I'm hyping this game up in my head. It's a bit alarming because this is something I don't normally do; It's going to be devastating if this game is nothing how I want it to be.

Man, Planetside... is... probably where I've experienced emergent gameplay far beyond any other game. I've got dozens of "war stories" from that game... so many magic moments...

Like the time me and 2 friends (Vanu are Sovereign!) held the bridge outside a Smurf portal against a significantly larger force, for a rather lenghty period of time.

Or the times we acted as black ops, shutting down bases around the island away from where the heaviest fighting was. Or harrying the outsides of the enemy-zerg, deflecting it. Distracting enemies by taking towers in non-tactical locations...

Or just sitting outside the reactor, knowing that the base was lost... and everything was... too quiet. Moments before all hell broke loose.

And so many others... to say that I'm psyched for PS2... is a bit of an understatement ;)

But... I expect to be disappointed, much safer :)

If you wanted to do GB group stuff, people would need to agree on a faction.

Either way, I'm going TR.

The real question is...what faction? Should stage a vote or something when the time comes. I'm curious though about how many different dudes you can have or if they're gonna go all MAG on it(which I think is unlikely) and only allow one character and one faction.

In the E3 2012 livestream of Planetside 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLakXgelJGY) game designer Margaret Krohn mentioned it will be 1 character per server, however as this is a F2P with microtransactions it wouldn't surprise me if you could buy more character slots. Planetside 1 was initially one faction per server, later they opened up so you could have characters on other factions but jumping to another faction would lock you out of the other factions for a couple of hours so you couldn't hop on to other factions to spy what they're up to just like that.

Personally i prefer the 1 faction per server, it worked very well in the first planetside and it created strong faction loyalty, from what I've heard most people who played the first will be playing the same faction again and wouldn't even consider playing the others because of the drama and strong dislike towards the other factions that was experienced in Planetside. I really liked that aspect of Planetside, I've never cared so much about which faction I'm fighting for as in that game. Hope Planetside 2 will have an awesome community like the first one had but i guess that's going to be hard since it's F2P and even free to download, not to mention that was back in 2003 when internet was a slightly nicer place :(

From the sounds of it you'll be able to submit LFG type stuff. At the very most that would make tons of sense. Create a plan of attack for a particular area, post it on line; people who think it's a good idea can sign up and when you get to capacity the commanders all set up and go. Inversely, the designated area to attack would show up as a defense mission on an opposing side and a disrupt for the third faction. This would be good.

@AhmadMetallic It was more of a calm before the calm before the calm before the drizzle before the calm before the calm before the storm. Basically everyone was running around aimlessly, sometimes engaging in small skirmishes largely by accident. You could go days sometimes without seeing a full-scale battle where 100 guys from each faction simultaneously decided "You know what? We really need to take this bridge." But when it did happen it was amazing.
Ah, that's kinda lame. Yeah, a slight form of funneling would do the game good then.

If there's enough of a buzz around this game from the GB community we might be able to get something approximating a coordinated assault going. That would be awesome.
I plan on making it the number 1 multiplayer game for the GB PC community, replacing Battlefield 3, so I promise you a lot of action and fireworks.

Have you played the original Planetside? It had a lot of downtime unfortunately but once a real battle started going, it was fucking glorious.

If they can figure out a way to funnel players into large-scale engagements more quickly then Planetside 2 will be the best video game ever.

Ever.

Agreed. Things could be slow for a while, especially later in the game's life, but when shit happened it was a night long war for an entire continent.  Those times, hands down, remain some of my favorite experiences with a video game ever.
Personally I love the idea of calm before the storm. The reason I resent Battlefield 3 the most is because it feels like I'm playing Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer, but with more people stretched upon a bigger map.
The reason I worshipped Battlefield 2 was that calmness before or after each long excruciating fight. After the two teams would battle over a flag in the most glorious frontier-esque fashion imaginable, they would sort of retreat and communicate with the commander to know where to go next.

I actually hope that they don't remove that down time and turn it into Battlefield 3 - a 24/7 non-stopping action on maps that happen to be bigger than standard.
