I guess it's sunk cost. No need to torture myself over what are effectively phantasms.

Inspiring Premise

Whether or not I know a thing about the game itself, the premise causes creative sparks in my brain.

List items

  • So very, very odd. :)

Though there's a profound lack of masturbatory light saber recharging.

  • I can't get enough of this damned game.

  • Never played it, but dying to.

    Have read it, however!

  • I've already talked at length about this, but it's still pretty cool to me.

  • I kept thinking that this was the name of a designer, which made for some very confusing mentions on podcasts. Now that I know what it's about, I love the idea and wish more games were willing to take this kind of angle, both in premise and in gameplay.

  • BACKPACK!!

    BACKPACK!!

    WITH JETS!!!

A little weird-science, alternate reality thing. Yes. Yes.

  • Grind House is an untapped energy source which will fuel our explorations of the outer solar system. *scratchy sound followed by popping sound*

  • Just... YES.

  • A fantasy game that tries something a bit more different than goofy wardrobes, elves or dwarves automatically gets points from me, but they get extra points when they try to overturn the fantasy narrative itself. It starts with firearms, then it moves on to some very strange creatures that people seem to ignore...

  • World building on a massive scale. Maybe some year in the far flung future they'll make an interface for human beings.

  • Ignore all the plot development, just: Disinterested guy just wants to get the job done in a beautiful, ugly, twisted city in the sky.

  • The first cartridge system. Predates the release of the Atari 2600, but didn't wind up selling as well as the Atari VCS. Had a better color range, but its sprites weren't quite as detailed. Still, it broke away from the original Odyssey, and had one of the first games that used sound in a gameplay-relevant way.

Can't bloody wait for Alan Wake. You should get SCUMMVM and play "I have no mouth..." it is excellent. Very much trial and error but good and creepy.

@thehideousshrew: I Have No Mouth is a SCUMM game?  I never knew...  Oh, I guess SCUMMVM is compatible with it.

I'm always keen on trying that game out, but part of me keeps nagging for me to buy it from Harlan Ellison himself, to honor the work he did on it.  It's still for sale there, I think...

Yeah, here's the link.

Trial and error is OK if the experience makes up for it, if the puzzles themselves aren't the main focus.  I remember even the demo was creepy, so I don't doubt the rest delivers the goods.  Thanks for the recommendation!
