I guess it's sunk cost. No need to torture myself over what are effectively phantasms.

Some games encourage replayability, but I'm not sure the designers remember that repetition can be a bit withering.

List items

  • I love this game, but I don't like the first stage's music. I may have played this when I was sick, but the tone is slightly off, not very adventurous, and reminds me a bit of suffering under an impenetrable fever dream that makes me slightly queasy. Might help if there was much to do of consequence other than finding the udjat eye, but even the treasure is undervalued here. The only real bonus is if you manage to buy some good equipment, if you're lucky enough to find a spawned shop with some quality items. Especially with the later patches, since the prices scale to level.

  • "Some day I'll find a way around your guard." Opening dude says. Over and over. Never mind that the starting sequence is slow, and feels slower the more you've played through it. I put off playing this game again by half a year after first inspiration, just because I didn't want to hear that phrase again, or run around getting lectures on the nature of the Empire. At least you get to fluster Master Li a bit, saying suspicious stuff that suggests some kind of foreknowledge, but I wish they had taken that to an extreme, an unlocked dialog option that you only see when you start the game after having beaten it at least once. Would be nice if there were more non-jerk choices in the game itself, too.

  • "Wake up! We're here. Why are you shaking? Are you OK?" Learn to walk, learn to talk, pick your race, pick your class, oops you screwed up or you put the game down and can't remember where you left off despite the huge game log, start all over: "Wake up! We're here. Why are you shaking? Are you OK?" Once I get past a certain point, though, I always find new things, always get distracted. Fun stuff.

  • While lacking in tutorial angst, replaying here is still the class-based cyclical problem it always is. Did I pick the right skills? Here more than Morrowind, the answer may well be "no." At least once you're out of the dungeon, and ensure that the main quest line doesn't falter, you can do pretty much what you want, even if that might feel a bit repetitive after a while.

  • "Get me out of Candlekeep NOW!" So sayeth the wise Alondo.

  • While there's a lot to like in this game, I've come to loathe the starting locations. Given that you die a lot in this game, it makes me a bit weary to be asked to go through starter areas so often. Thankfully you can skip them, but it means you might be more vulnerable while searching for a place to explore and level up in.

  • If you prefer playing Republic or Empire exclusively, be prepared to get a tour of similar areas in most of the worlds in your quest to supposedly do completely different things. It's one of the inherent flaws of the level system, where difficult enemies must be seeded in levels that players can combat without it being too easy. Since it has to be the same for everyone playing in the same space, with designs like these you are compelled to follow the same track. Best to switch to other factions and class types to reduce fatigue.
