i just finished MGS3 (which was amazing by the way) and i couldn't help but be saddened by my results screen

alert mode 189 times? damn. i guess stealth really isn't my thing :P just thought i'd share my stats after going rambo style for about half of the game.

jan 2013 update:

i'm better, but i am still not good at MGS3

how i managed to shave off nearly ten hours of playtime is beyond me.. unless it counts retries from deaths, then maybe i can see it. i'm somewhat glad that i killed 200 less people (which made The Sorrow that much less of a pain) but still.. 205 people. damn. so much for stealth, huh?

it's still a spectacular game, with a crazy story. it took me a second play through to really understand what was going on, so that ending hit me even harder than it did before. its mechanics, while kind of clunky by MGS4 standards, still hold up fine considering it's nearly ten years old at this point. also, Ocelot is still kickass.

That game definitely isn't a breeze the first time through by any stretch.  Though I did find the Fear comically easy.  Infrared Goggles + Machine Gun = LOLPWNED.

Shame you didnt like the end, its probably my favorite boss battle of all time. Yea it takes an hour but its an hour of intense holy shit moments. I just loved sitting in the grass slowly moving scared shitless waiting for him to pop up. You're just afraid that the second you pop up hes gonna see you and shoot and for all you know hes on a different map. I mean its a real sniper battle, thats actually how a sniper battle goes, slow patient camouflaged shooting. 
 My favorite moment was when i thought i saw him i crawled on the edge of a cliff and starting scoping around for him when all of a sudden BAM! The fucker snuck up behind me and bonked me on the head then ran, scared the piss outta me. 
 
I suppose if you didnt have the patience to be sneaking around the whole game you wouldnt have it to snipe with him. Still an amazing gaming moment, for me anyway.

hehe 402... That was similar to my  very easy playthrough when I went through the games in sequence before 4 came out... 
 
There gets to a point where it makes it 10 times easier just waiting in a corner for everyone to rush you and then just blasting them all with a shotgun. When I first played it I remember  being the stealthiest person on the planet messing with all the camo and waiting in long grass as snakes went by for seemingly hours... 
 
The sorrow section is a pain though.

Oh. Wow that's some interesting stats you've got there mate. Though in fairness this is your first time playing this game and you're playing the original version as opposed to the Subsistence edition (which has better camera in it.) I'll be frank with you Ajay. That is indeed a horrible score! BUT! You liked it, and that's good. If you ever play it again it becomes much easier since you know what to do. Make sure to get all the secrets too!

one of the best stories in a videogame. Easily, MGS 3 was one of the big ones i played where i was like yea "videogames can compete head on against any media"

the dynamics between Naked Snake and THE BOSS, and Naked Snake and Ocelot are some of the best around

and then theres that deep crazy, super fucked up story.

It's just all about patience and scouting out the area in a safe position(s). Find out the routes the soldiers are on and then plan your way around. I've played this game several times over the years and I still struggle after a while. Slow and steady wins the race.

Sounds like me. I was pretty awful at stealth in Splinter Cell: Conviction and that's by all accounts much more forgiving.

I have still never played a Metal Gear Solid game.

I never liked it for the stealth because once it goes bad, it goes REAL BAD. So I just find ways to avoid everything and kill everything and eventually make it through and enjoy the crazy cutscenes. That's led to me not knowing half the things you could actually do in MGS2 or 3 and when I see videos of people shaking down guards and all sorts of stuff, my mind is blown.

Not sure if that's the fault of the game or myself. Eh. Whatever. MGS4 is the best-playing game in the series anyway.

ahahaha. how blunt you've become with saying that over time amuses me to no end. this time, i played the HD Version with the better camera and frame rate this time and.. well, now you see how much that improved made a difference!

@mrfluke: it took me this playthrough to totally understand what The Boss did and.. god damn. it really made that last fight that much more impactful in retrospect. the final salute is just.. dhakjdhkajdhkashdjk

@Baillie: i have a feeling that i'll comeback to MGS3 at some point doing some sort of playthrough where i try to get through every encounter with absolute stealth and minimizing casualties. it sounds like something that could be incredibly satisfying, and MGS3 probably rewards you nicely for it. that's not to say that i threw stealth out the window during this playthrough, but i, admittedly was sloppy with being sneaky and had no problem getting in huge gunfights if the chance arose. i wonder if European Extreme (the one where you fail upon alert phase?) would whip me into being totally stealthy.

@Bigandtasty: does Splinter Cell have any sort of freedom in how you accomplish objectives? the only time i played a Splinter Cell game was a demo of the first one on PC, and i remember instafail stated for getting spotted which is something i don't like at all. as clunky as the gunplay can be in MGS, i at least appreciate the fact that it doesn't always give you instafail and lets you handle stuff in your own way, even if sometimes it's better just to die & restart than continue.

@ZombiePie: damn, son. they're some of the best games i've ever played. not just for the completely insane stories and cutscenes, but because those games just have so much personality and charm. something about MGS's shameless fourth-wall breaking, constantly effective humor and out-of-this-world plot twists gives it that feeling that i haven't really gotten in any other game series. if you have any sort of interest, you should probably get on that before those games start to age-- or age even worse, as some people see it.

@MormonWarrior: oh hell yeah things go real bad. it's probably one of the biggest flaws about all of the MGS games prior to MGS4-- that going balls-out rambo on everything isn't really one of the best ways to play the game. i guess that didn't stop me, though since running around blasting the shotgun made me a god damn unstoppable force. i'll admit that i'd probably be a lot better off being stealthy, but god damn did i ever have fun going HAM on everyone with the shotgun and machine gun.

that's not to say the stealth aspects aren't fun, either. sure, you could spend forever sneaking through a place only to get caught and have it ruin all the immersion and momentum that you had, but when stuff goes well, it feels good man. stuff like holding up enemies, having them empty their pockets for items, interrogating them and all sorts of other stuff in MGS3 just kind of makes it all worth it with the negatives considered. it's like, i was hiding from these assholes the entire time and now the dude that i was afraid of, is scared shitless at my presence.

with all of that said, i guess those flaws make me appreciate how much better MGS4 played. i'll have to go back and check my stats, but i'm pretty sure i got a badge for just mowing down endless amounts of dudes. it felt good playing a MGS game where i could tear dudes up with an assault rifle, and it was a completely viable and competent way to properly play the game.

@AjayRaz: Conviction is extremely forgiving, even on the highest difficulty. I did play a bit of Chaos Theory (third game in the series), and it was a fair bit less fluid in terms of movement, but didn't auto-fail me upon being spotted from what I played.

Both games have specific moments where getting spotted will cause immediate failure, but in most cases they'll let you get away with it. Not sure about the original.

@mrfluke: even if that image is busted, i know what you're on about. in fact, i did it myself as soon as i read what you wrote.

god, i love Ocelot in that game.
