  • Brave Fencer Musashi - I got to the last level but never beat it
  • Mega Man Legends - I beat this game back in the day. Bought the PS1 classic, but playing that game on Vita with only one set of shoulder buttons kinda sucks.
  • Mega Man Legends 2 - Never played it. I want to fix that!
  • Final Fantasy Tactics - Beat it recently on Android, but would play again!
  • Legend of Dragoon - Borrowed it from a friend, but never finished it
  • Colony Wars - I remember watching my brother play this, but I never did.
  • Valkyrie Profile - I remember watching my cousin play this, but I also never did.

These must be included!

...

They will probably not all be included. Especially Mega Man Legends 2. Maybe not even Mega Man Legends 1 :(

@an_ancient Wow, what a coincidence! If this combination is doing that well at 4k, I imagine it will be fine for 1440p. Thanks!

Hey everyone. I checked, and it seems that the new parts will fit in my case just fine. I also cleaned up some of the dust in there. When I turned the PC back on, the CPU fan sounded weird; it turned out some dust had been blown into it as an obstruction. Once I cleared that, it worked fine.

While verifying that, I was running it with the side off so I could see the CPU fan spinning. Then I noticed the big fan at the front wasn't spinning. I am not sure how long that has been that way. It seems to be plugged in properly to the system fan header on the motherboard.

When I get the new parts, I will take my PC all the way apart and try to investigate that a little more, but how big an issue is it if I can't get it to work? As I said, I am not actually sure how long it hasn't been working (maybe it never was), and I haven't noticed any issues.

@xanadu Thanks for the insight! I see, so CPU improvements may be more important for stuff other than video games.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone! I hadn't bothered to check how my CPU compares. I hear all the time about how in a short amount of time, computer hardware advances a lot, so I just assumed a 4 year old CPU would be obsolete.

If that's the case, maybe I can just upgrade my GTX 660 to a 1070, double my RAM to 16 GB, get a new quieter cooler, and call it a day. The only thing is I have a micro ATX case, and need to make sure the bigger card and cooler will fit. If not, I will have to see if I can find a bigger case that still accepts a micro ATX motherboard.

Thanks again!

Hello,

I am considering building a new PC since my existing one only barely meets the minimum requirements for PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS and doesn't meet the minimum requirements for FFXIV as of the latest expansion coming out next month.

When I built my current PC, which was my very first PC build, I never ended up upgrading it at all, and I anticipate this one to be the same. Because of that, I am trying to build it to be able to last a while. My objective is to be able to run games at 60 fps at 1440p. I don't have a 1440p monitor now, but I want to leave myself some room in case I decide to get one with the PC or upgrade to one later. Here is the build I came up with:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7vfJD8

CPU

I chose what seemed like the best Core i5 because a core i7 seemed like overkill. I have read that there is not actually that much difference between the current generation processors and the previous generation ones, or between the different i5 processors in the same generation, but they also seemed to all be pretty close in price (within around $40), so I figured I may as well get the best one.

That brings me to my first question. I have a Core i5-3570k on my current computer, and it is somewhat loud. I am not sure if that is because it's a "k" variant or if it is just intrinsic to the stock cooler, but are non-"k" variants significantly quieter? If that were the case, I would definitely go for one of those instead. The noise in my current PC is actually why I have a non-stock cooler in the build, in the hopes that it will be quieter.

Graphics Card

From what I have read, a GTX 1060 can handle 1440p, but maybe not at max settings at 60 fps for most games, so I went with a 1070.

RAM

Seems pretty straightforward. I've read stuff that says 32 GB is overkill, so I went with 16.

Motherboard

I can't remember my previous build, but is it normal for motherboards to have lots of good reviews, but then relatively few bad ones that nevertheless sound really scary? That seemed to be the case for most of the ones I looked at. I eventually gritted my teeth and chose one, but I'm still kind of nervous about it.

Case

I just picked one that didn't seem too flashy.

Summary

Hello. You may not feel like reading all the above. That's cool! Here are the questions in list form.

  1. Are "k" variant Intel CPUs significantly louder than non-"k" variants?
  2. Are after market coolers significantly quieter than the stock one that comes with the CPU?
  3. Does anyone happen to know if Intel stock coolers have gotten quieter over time, such that one bought today would make less noise than the one I have now?
  4. Is it normal for motherboards to have a few scary bad reviews along with a larger amount of good reviews, or should I be wary? Most of the ones I saw seemed to be that way.
  5. Any other comments on what I put together?

Thanks for reading!

P.S. I posted this just before going to bed, so please don't take offense if I don't respond until late morning/early afternoon EDT.

When Andromeda came out, it really made me want to replay the old games. While looking for a reasonably priced way to do that, I found out that the Mass Effect Trilogy is actually a thing on Origin for PC. However, it doesn't come with any of the DLC, which I believe would still end up being hundreds of dollars to buy separately. I wish they would bundle all of that stuff together for a reasonable price.

Fucking Wiegraf, man, the guy is infamous. To this day I cheese him with the Tailwind/Focus/Auto-Potion strat, since it's the easiest to do without overspecializing your Ramza. I can't believe they didn't do anything to that fight in the War of the Lions remake.

In a similar vein, the latest game I put down due to difficulty was Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest. I hit Ch 24 and realized that my characters were specced and leveled in such a way as to make life much more difficult for myself, and there's no grinding in CQ, so I couldn't fix it short of a restart (even with all the DLC levels I'd purchased). That took all the wind out of my sails on that game. It's weird, too, because those extra levels are meant for leveling up unused characters, but the Exp gain is just disabled for Conquest saves. I'll never get the hardcore difficulty fetishists in that fanbase. The no-permadeath setting had as much to do with that game breaking out in the West as the dating sim elements, imo.

For this playthrough I was a Black Mage with Mystic Arts as a secondary command. He could take two-thirds of my health in one hit. I finally figured out that if I cast drain to survive two of his attacks, and it doesn't miss, I could cast Firaga and make him kneel, which ended the fight.

Another weird thing I found that I couldn't find any reference to on the internet is that Lucavi seem to be weak to Mystic Arts. The drain move does even more damage than Flare. Not sure what that's all about.

I played through Final Fantasy Tactics on my phone recently, and it reminded me about a fight in the game where your main character has to fight a boss one-on-one. The first time I played through the game, I think my character as I had built him was literally incapable of winning that fight. And that fight is in a multi-part scenario that you can't back out of once you have started it, so I couldn't go back and grind to get stronger. Combine that with the fact that I only had one save slot, and I was just straight up stuck.

I still really like that game, and I eventually went back, started it over, and beat it, but man I was upset at the time.
