Hello,
I am considering building a new PC since my existing one only barely meets the minimum requirements for PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS and doesn't meet the minimum requirements for FFXIV as of the latest expansion coming out next month.
When I built my current PC, which was my very first PC build, I never ended up upgrading it at all, and I anticipate this one to be the same. Because of that, I am trying to build it to be able to last a while. My objective is to be able to run games at 60 fps at 1440p. I don't have a 1440p monitor now, but I want to leave myself some room in case I decide to get one with the PC or upgrade to one later. Here is the build I came up with:

CPU
I chose what seemed like the best Core i5 because a core i7 seemed like overkill. I have read that there is not actually that much difference between the current generation processors and the previous generation ones, or between the different i5 processors in the same generation, but they also seemed to all be pretty close in price (within around $40), so I figured I may as well get the best one.
That brings me to my first question. I have a Core i5-3570k on my current computer, and it is somewhat loud. I am not sure if that is because it's a "k" variant or if it is just intrinsic to the stock cooler, but are non-"k" variants significantly quieter? If that were the case, I would definitely go for one of those instead. The noise in my current PC is actually why I have a non-stock cooler in the build, in the hopes that it will be quieter.
Graphics Card
From what I have read, a GTX 1060 can handle 1440p, but maybe not at max settings at 60 fps for most games, so I went with a 1070.
RAM
Seems pretty straightforward. I've read stuff that says 32 GB is overkill, so I went with 16.
Motherboard
I can't remember my previous build, but is it normal for motherboards to have lots of good reviews, but then relatively few bad ones that nevertheless sound really scary? That seemed to be the case for most of the ones I looked at. I eventually gritted my teeth and chose one, but I'm still kind of nervous about it.
Case
I just picked one that didn't seem too flashy.
Summary
Hello. You may not feel like reading all the above. That's cool! Here are the questions in list form.
- Are "k" variant Intel CPUs significantly louder than non-"k" variants?
- Are after market coolers significantly quieter than the stock one that comes with the CPU?
- Does anyone happen to know if Intel stock coolers have gotten quieter over time, such that one bought today would make less noise than the one I have now?
- Is it normal for motherboards to have a few scary bad reviews along with a larger amount of good reviews, or should I be wary? Most of the ones I saw seemed to be that way.
- Any other comments on what I put together?
Thanks for reading!
P.S. I posted this just before going to bed, so please don't take offense if I don't respond until late morning/early afternoon EDT.
