  • Just watched The Room. It is a terrible, wonderful world that we live in that such a film is possible.

Hello Giant Bomb. Congratulations. You're a site. I'm a game designer. University qualified. With honours. That means, in the pecking order, I peck you, baby.

Well, that might be a little more the case when I release some games. So, in an attempt to stave off ego starvation until I release a game and have Mr Gerstmann ask me nicely for an interview and a review copy, I will take you through the horrible, terrible and wonderful process. The only process worth a damn. The process of turning a good idea into a good thing. And let me tell you, it really isn't easy.

Some people believe that the age of the bedroom game designer is well and truly over, with products that were created with that fashion often sensationalised for simply that reason. Personally, I think it's ridiculous. Making stuff now is so very easy its almost difficult not to release an awesome game while, say, trying to customise your e-mail signature. Sure, you won't get something crispy hi-def AAA, something that makes graphics cards and graphics nerds explode in a pile of goo. But you will get a game.

I'm no hobbyist either. I'm not turning out once-a-week flash games. No point in baking cupcakes when you can bake a cake.

Actually, I'm sitting here, looking at my brand new shiny iPhone and the iTunes Application Store, and my copy of the iPhone SDK which makes things so elegantly simple and fun to make stuff for iPhone and so simple to sell it that I'm thinking I might end up in some worse hell than hobbyists. I might end up a mobile game designer. Burr. Traditionally, I would already be running away. We both know what mobile means, dear reader: overpriced shit for morons. At its most 'hardcore', laughably awful 'ports' of AAA titles. You might notice there is no Mobile platform in Giant Bomb. This is because Gamers Don't Care About Mobile Games.

But an iPhone... it's different, surely? You can get it in a non-phone variety in the iPod touch. That makes it practically a handheld console. It has almost the same graphical grunt as a PSP, and its a hell of a lot smaller and nicer. Sure it doesn't have any physical buttons, but that means you have complete freedom to make a perfect UI. Can I be a Serious Game Designer and make an iPhone game? Please?

The reason I still believe in PC gaming? I've played a dozen LFD2 pickup games now all with great people using voice chat and teamwork.

Has anyone found a clever solution to solve Django's lack of a "ready-to-go" signal? Something that works with both web and mgmt commands?
