Blog #14 - Phoenix Wright Illustrations, Please Help?

So, I foolishly decided to start yet another Phoenix Wright character illustration (I guess I should call them ace attorney illustrations but screw it). This time it's Trucy Wright. I really love her magician look, and I think I did a good job on this one. I didn't fuck it up this time. However, I'm starting to find my style a bit flat (I know that's what I was going for but I'm bored with it a bit) so to mix tings up I applied some effects.

Already I've been designing these things like old posters so I decided  to go all the way and make it look actually old. I'm not sure if it's any good though. Can the Giant Bomb community please help me decide? I'd like to hear your thoughts on which is better. Plain or with sickening effects.

Here they are:

 Normal

 Weathered Effect

If you could post some thoughts in the comments that would be great. Also if you have any comments about my illustration in general. I think I did so much better on this one than with Ema Skye. I did an OK face this time! I'll use your feedback to make some changes and then post the final one. Thanks.

Edit: some 'in development' screenshots that I don't normally show.

I'd love to, but I can't see me having the time before christmas. It's 4.30am right now, I have to get up for University in 3 hours and I'm out until 11pm... so things are crazy right now. I still haven't done phoenix wright (check my blog for all the other characters I've done). If I do phoenix I'll put a nice santa hat on him, just for you.

I think I like the 2nd one more, there's more of a texture to it. The top one seems too clean to me.

@MarkWahlberg:  Thanks for the feedback. All of my phoenix wright illustrations are based on a very clean art style with no outlines, just solid blocks of colour. Low contrast. I guess I'm sort of basing it on 40s war posters and early 50s poster design ( such as the work of Lester Beall). So yeah, the first one has that style but then I used textures on the second to make it look like it was a poster from that time and has weathered with aged. But good to get opinions.

A nice illustration. I much prefer the weathered picture, as MarkWahlberg said the texturing helps add something.

@Gamer_152:  Thank you for taking the time to comment. I want to get them printed up in to posters eventually so it's good to get feedback. :)

I like this first one better, and need to be a little sharper in the eyes, but that's may just because of JPEG
Diggin the style, it's effective

All of the opinions I have heard from friends and on here seem to be split. Rather annoying, because I don't know which direction to take my work in now.

@AlisterCat: Here's a tip.
Don't care what others say, it's your drawing, you do what you think is best.
You can never please everyone

@Kjellm87:  I don't know either way though. I rely largely on feedback and criticism to make 'artistic' decisions. Partly because of my lack of faith in my design sensibilities but also because I want to make something that people like. Also, I'll need to stick one of them up on my website. I might go for the weathered one since that is the most different but I'm still undecided. I will try and sharpen the eyes a bit, which was good point from you.
