Lost Gems #1 - Maximo: Ghosts to Glory

I play a lot of niche games so I'm doing a blog series of hidden and forgotten classics. I hope to inform people of these old games and if you have played any of them, by all means please list your experiences and opinions on the game in question. And the first game is.....

Maximo: Ghosts to Glory is an old-school hack and slash game made by Capcom on the PS2. The game is based on the classic Ghosts n' Goblins series and borrows some elements from it like very hard difficulty and Maximo's armor comes off every time he gets hit until he's left with only boxers (perverts!). The game is primarily a platformer with some beat em' up elements. Maximo is able to move freely around the 3D plane to jump, attack enemies, and defend himself all with the help of the Playstation 2. The game is split into 5 worlds each with different stages and a boss at the end. I won't talk about the story since I don't want to spoil it for
anyone, but it's hilarious and well worth the price of admission.  The game was met with mixed reception and scores ranged between 6-9. The vast majority of reviews said the game wasn't accessible due to it's difficulty, it currently has an 84 rating on Metacritic so it isn't THAT mixed. There is also a sequel called Maximo vs. Army of Zin. It might be a little expensive now but if you find it at Gamestop/EBGames for a cheap price, pick it up!

That's it for the first "hidden gem". I don't have a fixed time period for when I'll write up another one, but it won't take long. Thanks for reading and make sure to follow me. :D

YES!  I loved the Maximo games.  I thought Army of Zin was better, though...a bit more refined in both gameplay and graphics.  Regardless, these were great action platformers.

I remember playing this game years ago and being incredibly frustrated with it, but I kept with it and it felt incredibly rewarding. However, I got stuck in the level after the 4th boss trying to cross a bridge or something and I had no idea where to go or what to do. I tried to jump it and unsurprisingly failed to make it. This sent me back to fight the 4th boss again (that punishing difficulty apparant here).I eventually got back to where I was at the bridge and died again. At this point I said fuck it and have never touched that game since, good memories.

I felt compelled to share that for some reason. Anyway...

@jakob187: Indeed! I didn't beat Army of Zin but I should get back to it one day and acquire a copy.

@Allprox: Thanks for sharing! I got pissed at this game when I was younger and it almost drove me insane but yes, it is very rewarding. :D

LOVED this game back when it came out. It'd be fantastic if Capcom would continue the series.

I have this game still.  Somewhere.  This game was good, but ridiculously difficult.  It was very obviously a spiritual successor to the Ghosts n Goblins games.  I can't recall if I beat this game or not, but I had fun with it.

Yes. I haven't played the first, but Army of Zin of oh so good.
Whilst on the topic of sleeper/hidden gems, I vouch for Shadow of Rome as well. Amazing game imo.

I love Maximo: Ghosts to Glory. I haven't played it in a while, but would love to go back and 100% that bad boy. Finding all the hidden chests without looking at a FAQ can be a bitch. Initially it took me a while to get used to the fact that you really have to grind to get your number of lives up, but I got to a point where I'd really enjoy speed running levels to get all the stuff.

Funnily enough, for all the enjoyment I got out of the first game, I never caught up with the (apparently superior) follow up.

I never played the first one, but the second one was awesome!

one of the few games I just gave up on completely... It was so hard in spots and the checkpointing drove me insane. I really enjoyed it to begin with  though.

I've never gotten to play either of them, but heard they were fantastic and sort of resembled the Ghouls N' Ghosts series, of which I'm a fan. I'll have to pick it up and try it.

This is one of the few games I've ever purchased and never beaten. It's a great game, but it was incredibly difficult in spots.
