Allard: Best of 2009

List items

  • This game raises the bar for all future action/adventure games. Everything about it is so polished, it's scary. Why are there so few games that do this? An evening playing this game is at least as satisfying as watching a good movie. Not many games are like that, most intersperse their set-pieces with repetitive gameplay. But not Uncharted 2, it constantly fascinates with ever-changing situations. Easily the best of 2009!

  • The first game was a breaktrough title for me. Experiencing an environment and culture that is long gone in such great detail really shows the potential of the interactive medium. While I don't think the time and place in the sequel is as interesting as in the first game, many gameplay features are improved and expanded, so the overall quality of the game is higher than the first. An awesome game that deserves a high placement in 2009's top 10.

  • Even though I much rather have the Resident Evil series return to its zombies and pre-rendered backgrounds, RE5 still is a great follow-up to 4. The controls are not an issue once you get used to them, and the story incorporates enough familiar characters to remind that this is an RE game. Just not an instant classic as some of those that came before were.

  • Killzone 2 proves that not all games of the same console generation should have comparable graphics. The art design and fine-tuned rendering pipeline combine to make this game look amazing, and it plays really well too. Shame about the anti-climactic ending though.

  • A sneaky way to get the brilliant Prime games into a 2009 list...

  • The 3D platforing genre is all but dead. So it's great to see a game that does that type of gameplay reasonably well (even though it's more a shooter than a platformer). This game, like its predecessor, is just plain fun to play, and looks great too.

  • Much critisism has been leveled at the seemingly inappropriate RTS-type gameplay, but I enjoyed it. At least it's somewhat different. But the real reason to play this game is the wonderfuly imaginative characters and environments. The vocal performaces by Jack Black and the others make it all work. I don't think I would have played this game without the great voices and music.

  • If a new Nintendo-produced Zelda game doesn't make the top 10 of that year, something is very wrong with the world. Luckily its placement is well deserved.

  • If anyone hates exagarated camera shake, it's me. But still I found it great fun to play through two of my favorite classics (RE2 and Code Veronica) from a different perspective. Just don't try to get all head-shots, because that camera won't allow precision. See it as a Cloverfield-style scary movie that you can interact with, and you'll have a great time.

  • I haven't played this one as much as I feel I should... Maybe it's because it all feels kind of familiar, like I played it before... on the DS?...on the SNES?...on the Gameboy?...on the NES? Maybe a little bit of all. But a new Mario game is welcome on any console, so at least it should get 10th place.

Nobody will agree with this list, except on the first two entries maybe. Where is MW2, where is Batman? But this is my personal list, not an evaluation of what are technically/objectively the best games of 2009.
