Casual is the New 'Hardcore'

Therefore, it becomes arguable that casual gamers are becoming the new hardcore class of the gaming community. 

PopCap games are most notably being recognized as the prime purveyor of games that many in the industry have labeled as ‘casual’. Many see these merely as simple mechanics mashed together and shipped out. 

However, there is truly a satisfactory amount of depth present. Peggle being one of the simplistic selections currently available in PopCap’s library, it at first seems to lack the profundity to keep any devoted gamer interested. But, the present mechanics combine a casual concept of dropping a ball with puzzle elements to make an astonishingly fun game.

So, it could be arguably a symbiotic relationship between the casual and hardcore titles and gamers in the community. Thus, as long as people keep playing, the ability to maintain the industry as a whole via easier or difficult titles ensures that there will always be a steady stream of new games with content that players, regardless of how much time they put into their gaming lives, may have never seen before. Thus, casual titles serve as a means to an end in regards to hardcore or triple AAA games constantly creating circumstance where casual gamers have the potential to always become hardcore.

I hate that word. It's such a marketing term to classify a set "demographic". The same can be said about "casual"  or "hardcore" - no one except PR cares about this. You either play video games or you don't. And players themselves don't care what kind of game is it as long as it is FUN.TO.PLAY. Point in case: two of my favorite games last year were Plants and Zombies and fucking Demon's Souls.

This is a bit 2008 and early 2009 news.
 
Publishers found out that the so called ' casual' isn't the new 'hardcore' since most of them don't buy games unless it's made by Nintendo or Popcap.
 
Casual isn't a genre, it just stands for 'uninformed'. Man the games people buy when they wander into a game store, they seem so bewildered and disoriented, picking up the worst possible games and then contemplating on which one to buy.

None of the OPs definition of casual or hardcore make sense. I don't think the invisible divide between the pretend hardcore and casual is the amount of time played. That's a bit silly. I play games that a "casual" player wouldn't, but I don't play them very much. And I play pop-cap games all the time. It's refreshing from stuff like MW2 that gets stressful.

There are such things as casual and hardcore games and there are casual and hardcore audiences.  THOSE DEMOGRAPHICS EXIST. Saying that they don't because you can enjoy both doesn't mean they're inseperatble. Just because you enjoy Bejeweled doesn't mean your girlfriend is going to play Modern Warfare 2. 
 
That said, Popcap really is hard to put a finger on. I kinda think of them as the "Nintendo" of today as Nintendo were in the 1980s. They have a large audience because their games (post Peggle) have low barrier to entry, feels rewarding, but never shallow. I can call Bejeweled casual, yes. But I really cannot call Plants vs. Zombies casual. Zuma II gets goddamn brutal. Peggle reminds me of Street Fighter II in a way that there's layers to the game.

the whole "Casual V hardcore" and "REAL gamers V Wii Owners" is just kind of sad to me. it reminds me of when i used to like heavy metal, and my retard friends would fight over who was "more metal". is this pissy cock waving really necessary? is the so called "casual" market really such a bad thing? personally i'd like to see as many people playing as many different kinds of games as possible. if all the games industry ever produced and ever made money on were the people who like hardcore RTS, RPG and FPS games, the video game industry would essentially become the Comic Book industry, a wasteland of dead-horse beating fanboyism that can barely sustain itself and where any artistic endeavor is as rare as it is monitarily unsucessful.

Dont get me wrong, i like casual, i like the Wii (i dont own one though) and what Nintendo does, heck, i love a whole lot of the Live Arcade games, i just hate it when so called old school hardcore franchises are dumbed down to sell more to the masses. Thi4f a.k.a. Thief 4 will likely never come out, that or Garret will have spiky hair, since Eidos is now owned by Square =P
