Adventures in Morrowind: Journal Entry #5

27 Last Seed, 3E330

What I drank from the potion healed me okay. I still had a gash from the stab wound but it was almost healed over. I ate some bread and water and set off back to Balmora. I was still very weak but I didn’t want to sit around any longer.

I arrived the next day. I received 4 lockpicks from Habasi. I didn’t have the strength to scream at her. She gave me another job, to find a bottle of Vintage Brandy in Ralen Hlaalo’s house. Simple. But first, I slept.

8 hours later I was good to go. I entered Hlaalo Manor and found Ralen Hlaalo dead. I spoke to one of his servants who said she saw the killer: a dark-elf with a red Mohawk, bonemold armor, and a Dwarven axe. I’d look for him myself. Before I left, I found the brandy on a wine shelf, swiped it and left.

Habasi gave me 1000 gold and promoted me to “Blackcap.” I took a day off from the guild and investigated the murder. I asked around the cornerclub and got several confirmations that it was a red-haird dark-elf who might be the killer.

I found the murder suspect, Thanelen Velas, at the Council Club. I questioned him and he said Nine-Toes, an argonian Blades member was the killer. Everyone in the Council Club confirmed this as well. They were covering up for Velas.

I stabbed Velas through the knee. He collapsed and I put my sword downward through his shoulder and into his chest, causing blood to spray all over myself and the walls. I watched the life fade out of his eyes, like he had with Ralen Hlaalo. I let him know I knew. By the time the club members found him, I was gone.

I had heard to speak to a Nileno Dorvayn about the matter at the Hlaalu Council Manor. He gave me 1000 drakes and said he would put in a good word for me if I wished to join House Hlaalu. I may later.

I returned home and went to bed.

That sounds great. I like it more in Morrowind purely because of all of that. And the "Eye for an eye," is so much better because sometimes it really should be in place, instead of sending someone to jail. Some people deserve the worst punishment possible, hence Velas being executed by me.

:)

@dankempster: Skyrim very much does take advantage of it's civil war backdrop. The Imperials are oppressive whereas the Stormcloaks are racists (or perhaps nationalists). It makes it very difficult to choose a side, and even when I finally did choose the Imperials I still felt really shitty killing the Stormcloaks as at that point in the game they had done no more wrong than the Empire had.

The quest you detail in today's entry has indirectly reminded me of yet another thing I love about Morrowind - how moral leanings in that game are never clear-cut, much more so than Oblivion. "An eye for an eye" really is the accepted method of justice in Vvardenfell, from what I can remember of that game. By contrast, a lot more of the differences in Oblivion can be settled diplomatically, without resorting to violence. Even the 'good' quest lines in Morrowind aren't for wholly noble causes - I remember tackling corruption within the Fighters' Guild, as an example. In Oblivion, the lines between good and evil are a lot more clear cut, I think. I suppose in a way it fits, given that Morrowind is a place where slave labour is still acceptable, while Cyrodiil is under much closer scrutiny given it's the hub of the Empire. I really hope that Skyrim takes advantage of its Civil War backdrop, and gives us a moral environment that's a little closer to that of Morrowind.
