" @Angerpowered: BALDUR'S GATE 2, SON.  It opened my 14 year old eyes to what games could be; storytelling devices that create great universes that completely suck you in. Most of its strengths define what a solid game should be, at least in my opinion. Planescape: Torment's up there too, but it's always stood out for being a bit of an oddity. The newer Bethesda games are definitely worth a mention because they brought a great sense of freedom (to newer gamers) that was missing from RPGs for years. Welcome to Giantbomb btw, duder! "
BG2 is definitely on the list :] I'm considering planescape as well. I will do either Oblivion or Fallout 3. Just one though.

Yes I will be restricting this to PC only for now.

I have Baldur's gate down as well as NWN.
Dungeon siege looks unique enough. I will consider it.

On second thought I don't think I will be able to finish DA:O in a week. My goal will be 2 weeks then. I'll update the blog regularly until I beat it though.

I wanted to skip icewind dale...but Dave Snide (a favorite of mine) called it one of his favorite CRPGs. Him being a reason why I've decided to do this, I decided to add it. PS:T is undeniably an awesome game. I will definitely play it if I still have the willpower for another interplay game. Towards the end.

Hi everyone! I'm new to Giant Bomb.

I'm starting up a blog about a personal project of mine; going through RPG history.
I'm going to systematically go through the greatest RPGs of the last decade or so, and review and comment on them.
If you're curious, check it out please! all comments are appreciated. Except for unnecessarily vulgar or mean comments. Unless they're humorous.

Anyway, my question for you guys is...

What was the most influential RPG of all time for you?
What was your favorite?
What games do you think defined the genre for you?

I'm currently working on my list of games to review and play through. I'll get my laptop by Tuesday-ish, and should have my first review of DA:O within about a week after that.

Thanks! :]

Hello to the few people who will bother reading this.

Allow me to introduce myself. I'm in high school as of writing this (please forgive grammar/spelling mistakes) and love video games. I like to sing, play guitar, and hangout with my lovely girlfriend and close bros. But I have always loved games; from the moment I picked up my first gameboy, to awaiting my potent new laptop. I love shooters. I love RTS. I love shooters A TON actually. And my second favorite genre is easily stealth-action. But the one genre that has captivated me and possibly even shaped me into the person I am, is the RPG. From my very first video game (Pokemon) to my most recent games played (Mass Effect 2 on the PS3), RPGs have dominated my gaming life and unfortunately, my personal life sometimes. But that's a different story that I do not wish to post on the internet. I'm sure you could find many like it.

I am extremely excited to undertake this project. I know that nobody will care or bother to read it. But I am excited to do this for my personal gain. I have a lot to talk about (ironic how so few people will read this yet I am investing so much time in it). I'll do my best to make this blog as easy and fun of a read as possible. I suck at essays and maybe some free fun-time writing will help me. Anyway, here goes.

My Mission:Save the universe several times as I go through the games I deem most influential for the genre in a little over the past decade.
The Good:I will hopefully develop myself as a writer, a gamer, and a historian. Ideally I will learn about what made the modern RPG into it's current incarnation, improve on my writing ability, and improve on my tactical prowess in party-based games. Women will orgasm when they see my level 12 mage.
The Bad:I will die many times and utter quite a few expletives. Especially towards the Infinity engine games.
The Plan:I will be using a PC for all gameplay. I have recently purchased a new laptop that is due to arrive on Tuesday. I plan on using it. I have compiled a list of games I will be playing. I will roughly play them in order of age, but there will be frequent exceptions. I will skip a few games as I have most likely already played them or played them recently. The list goes as follows. This is not a final list, but it is pretty concrete on what is there.

Dragon Age: Origins (All content packs inc.)
The Witcher
Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2 (Shadow Broker DLC.)

-I'm most likely a little burnt out of RPGs and will be taking a break with games that are relevant but not specifically RPGs. I'll do this a couple of times just so that I don't start hating my life.

Metro 2033
Civilization IV (most likely just a few days.)
Crysis (never had the chance to experience it on a great computer; now I will.)

-Break's over!

The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion/Fallout 3. I've invested heavily in both games and I only really want to go through 1.
Neverwinter Nights
Baldur's Gate 2
Icewind Dale (Don't want to do PS:T because 3 Interplay games in a row on the same engine sounds a little too much)
Diablo

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Games/Series I will not be going over:
KOTOR - I've played them and for some reason, don't have much interest in playing them again. I guess I don't like the star wars universe all that much. Not sure about it.

Bioshock/SS2 - These were great but...I don't really want to play them again either. Bioshock was exciting but my follow up playthroughs weren't as fun. Also, is it just me or does enemy difficulty spike around Hephaestus. Seemed kinda odd. Maybe I bumped the difficulty meter on accident but the enemies got a lot tougher at that area. Also, they're spoky. I like scary games but I don't want to be spooked to the point of not playing them. As bad of a practice as it sounds, I want to burn through games and get them done as efficiently as possible while getting the most out of them. That may be hard with some.

JRPGS - Not all that much variety between them. Sure they're influential but I feel they're more constricted to their own niche. Menus and turn based systems are standard fare here, and while they're fun I just can't find myself completing them. Too monotonous for me and all the outfits are funny. I like anime culture and enjoy the graphic styles of the modern 3d JRPGs but I don't find them as engaging. JRPGs are taking steps away from their menus and moving towards more interesting systems. Valkyria chronicles was interesting and kind of reminded me of table-top strategy games like Warhammer. This is purely from my perspective though, and I know very little about Warhammer.

Any others I left out?

 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have many things to talk about and prepare for. I just don't know it yet. I'll work things out as they appear though. In the mean time, happy gaming everyone!
