Game franchises that should end/should've ended many moons ago.

As the game industry continually gives birth to new successful I.P's , we are almost certain to see spin-off's,prequels,crossovers and even movies or books based on famous videogame, steadily allowing them to evolve into franchises. And due to the fact that these ventures generally pay off simply due to the fact that the piece of media in question is related to a commercially recognized I.P, it becomes tempting for developers and publishers to over-indulge in creating related products simply because attatching the I.P to the item in question almost garuantees a sizeable profit to be made off the back off the original game. Sometimes this products can be of a high quality, but many tend to be rushed effors with what feels to be very contrived relations to the original product. Of course we see this process not just games, but many different forms of media, although in this blog I'll be focusing  centrally on the game aspect.

I believe the video game business has seen some of the worst cases when it comes to milking franchises. Due to the large choice of consoles, both handheld and home consoles often see the same characters and loosly related plots appearing across their consoles. After hearing about Sonic 4, I've been thinking about all the game franchises I think really should've called it quits back in the glory days. Seeing some of my favorite game franchises being raped as the ever dwindling torch is passed on to an even lazier developer looking to make a quick buck is disheartening at best. So below I've complied a list of games I believe have lost thier charm over the years, bearing in mind these are simply my own opinions and aren't to be taken too personally.

Crash Bandicoot: Where oh where did it all go wrong for the original playstation mascot? Well, straight after Naughty Dog left to be honest. After 3 stellar platforming outings on the ps1 and an enjoyable Mario Kart inspired racing game Crash soon went down the drain and featured in countless mediocre titles that managed to suck the charm from this once respected franchise. His first outing on the PS2, Traveller's Tales developed Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex failed to expand on the platforming seen on the last generation of consoles while adding horrendously long loading screens to accompany the uninspired gameplay. On the plus side, several gameboy iterations of the franchise were released around the same time that managed to retain the fun of the orginals on a portable console, giving a glimmer of hope to the Bandicoot. Unfortunatly this was not to last, many more poor console effors were released including Twinsanity and another racing game, Crash Nitro Cart, which was largely unchanged from it's predecessor. While not absolutely woeful in execution, these game felt stale and lifeless, although Twinsanity did attempt to reinvent the franchise in a sense, I felt it was an ultimately broken and unsatisfying experience.  The worst was yet to come, as 2007 saw  Crash of The Titans  stumble it's way onto home and portable consoles alike. Crash and his companions recieved a needless new design that just looked like a last attempt at appearing 'cool' and the cumbersome controls and tedious gameplay only made matters worse. Subsequent games have seen the same treatment, although we have seen Crash and the gang revert back to their old style appearences. All in all, Crash's retirement has been long overdue but publishers seem set on taking every last ounce of dignity he has left before throwing in the towel. Shame.

The Tony Hawk Franchise:  I remember the feeling of mastering the controls in the original  Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. A great sense of accomplishment that I would feel throughout the series, but sadly that feeling dimished considerably somewhere along the line. Right up until Underground  I believed the series could do no wrong. Every game had presented new and exciting challenges, greater replay value and more tricks that ensured that I'd always come back for more. The wacky nature of the series also gave the game it's own distinctive feel, all these parts cemented it as the king of skating games, even though it was a genre scarce in challengers. Underground 2 , I felt was a let down from the previous game, exchanging a plot for what seemend to be more an episode of Jackass rather than a Tony Hawk game. Still, it wasn't that bad, I just felt the shift in focus to pro skater and Jackass star/general asshole, Bam Margera was unwarrented and only looked to profit on his rising popularity. Subsequent games such as  American Wasteland kept the smash this, punch that Jackass mentality and seemed to be less and less about skating. Project 8 was the first current genration outing seen from the franshise and while not changing much, was still an enjoyable experience. Skate, a new game being developed for this generation of consoles looked to snatch the skating crown that the Tony Hawk series had held for so long. This must of caused panic at Activision, because the later games began to include gimmicky features that I assume were  attempts at keeping things interesting. I belive last years Ride, should've been the last nail on the coffin, featuring an awful and mandatory motion bored. The game did not win fans over at the high price and unresponsive, lackluster gameplay. It's time to skate into the sunset and let Skate  reign supreme as this franchise is becoming an embarrassment to Acitivision and Hawk. That being said, an unwelcome return this year is almost inevitable.

Metal Gear Solid: Ok, I know that there will be a strong protest against this choice. But remember, this list is also including franchises I think should end, not that they've necessarily gone bad, but that they may risk turning sour if they were to continue. I love the MGS series. But the problem is, they finished it perfectly with MGS4. All loose ends were wrapped up. The gameplay was wholly satisfying and I believe it was easily the best of the series. For me, it made perfect sense to end it there. Now, if you've been following your MGS news then you'll know about the two games in the works. MGS: Rising, due for release on both the 360 and ps3, and Peace Walker for  release on the PSP handheld later this year. The latter being a prequel, which could give some interesting backstory to the games. But I fear that this series will eventually become a mess of plot holes and surplus characters and stories if it continues. If they can weave this story into the saga without it feeling contrived then I'll be happy, but I fear that this may become an inevitability if the seires continues for much after. I just feel that the series was resolved and that future games may dissolve into games simply created for a source of revenue, not contributing to the series in any meaningful way. I hope I'm wrong and this doesn't happen, but I think it's time for Konami to let the series go on an all time high.

Halo: The Halo franchise is one that seems to have spawned two opposites of opinion. Some will say that the Halo franchise offers a fierce capaign, unmatched multiplayer and one of the best protagonists seen in recent gaming. Others will tell you is that it's an overhyped shooter that fails to innovate or change with each entry, includes a short and repetitive single player, and a multiplayer component that cannot stand against the likes of Modern Warfare 2. Of course those are massive generalisations, but I believe that a significant amount of people hold the aforementioned opinions. Say what you want, but this franchise has taken off and has some serious weight behind it's name. Just last Year we seen two game not even considered part of the 'main' series, Halo:ODST and Halo Wars. Both games, while not reaching the sales success of Halo 3 or recieving as warm critic reviews, they booth became substantial sources of revnue for Bungie and Microsoft. But is the fact that they have not been received as well critically as previous efforts a sign of an eventual decline into a rut for the series. I belive not, if Halo:Reach is anything to go by. Bungie promises that this will be the 'definitive' Halo experience and from what I've seen I'm inclined to believe them. What worrys me about this franchise though is what will happen after that, Bungie have already announced that this will be their last Halo game. Even without Bungie, Microsoft insist that the franchise will continue. This is what has me worried. Sure, under the right developer this franchise could keep producing high quality games for years to come but if it falls into the wrong hands, it could spell an unrecoverable blow to the series. Not in the fiscal sense, but the quality aspect. I believe that if the next Halo game after Reach is poorly recieved by critics, the game will still sell like hotcakes because of the weight of the franchise. If it continues to turn profit even if the game itself is of a poor quality, the developers will see little incentive to improve on it and just like that, Halo could be stuck in a very depressing rut. That's why I think it may be for the best to end it after Reach , and like MGS, end on a high.

That's all I'm gonna mention for now. I have more, but alas I'm tired. I'll add some more games tonight if I get the time, failing that I'll do some later this week.

I left this in the comments but I thought I'd throw it down here too:

Thanks for all the feedback, I really appreciate it and its interesting to hear everyones opinion on this. Many people are bringing up Mario and Final Fantasy. While these series have been around longer than the games mentioned on this list, I find that they don't rely on their respective franchises to sell their games. Take the Final Fantasy franchise, it has existed since the nes days and if you were to follow the series from there to now you'd see how much the game has changed and evolved, not just in graphics, but often changing the entire gameplay mechanics with each installment, Sure, they're technically turn based, but each time the forumla is taken and refined for each installment in new and for the genre, innovating ways. These companies still put a large amount of resources into these franchises to ensure they don't stagnate and become irrelevant over time, which is more than I can say for the likes of the Tony Hawk or Crash Bandicoot franchises. In fact I believe that Mario may be more relevant now than he ever was. This generation we see next to no platformers and in turn very little good ones. Mario has continually presented what I consider the pinnacle of platform gaming, sure it doesn't have a story but that's not the point of Mario or platformers in general. The franchise has stayed true to it's platforming roots while simultaneously offering a more refined and enjoyable experience with each iteration. Mario Galaxy had some of the best level design I've witnessed in the genre or in gaming. The main difference between these franchises and the first two mentioned in my blog, while obviously being a large source of revenue for their respective developers, they still have something to offer to the gaming community

Phew, that's a lot of text. Can't say I disagree with you, though.
BTW, what are your thoughts on the Sonic franchise?

I'm possibly gonna do a section on Sonic. Personally, I think he's one of the worst cases. From being a simple 2D platformer to having his games constantly mutated, bringing in needless characters in an attempt to have a plot and delving into every genre hoping for a success. And one after another every game is as lackluster as the prior release.  A sad story. And the Sonic 4 thing is kinda like admitting defeat "we coudln't handle 3D so we're going to make a big fuss about releasing another game in the vain of the ones that ya'know...were actually good."

I somewhat agree with you about MGS, 4 should've been the last one. However, i don't have that much of a problem with Peacewalker, as it's the Big Boss story. But RIsing i'm not so sure about. I disagree about it being the best of the series though, it felt lacking to me, gamewise, storywise it had everything you could ever want.

I'm not sure about Reach yet, it looks like it could be good, if it's not just more Halo, and is something new. But there's so little information. I'm gonna say, after Reach, there's not a lot you can do. Continuing adventures of Master Chief? I think not.

If more games from a certain franchise are being developed, that means they have made or continue to make money. And if they're making money, that means people must have bought the games. And if people buy them, it's because they want the game. So why would you want to take that away from people who just want to play the game?

Sonic and Tony Hawk come to mind. And you should suffer in Hell for an eternity for suggesting Metal Gear Solid, even though you jusitfy it well, they are still consistently great games.

My opinions:

Dynasty Warriors. Seriously. Go look up this garbage. There's a new game every 3 months. It never ends. And they're never good. Who keeps buying these?

Final Fantasy. I get that this game series has fans, but holy crap. Final Fantasy 13 is coming out now. THIRTEEN. That's just in the main series. There's little trillions of spin offs and genre changes. There's a ridiculous number of these games. It's in the HUNDREDS. Let it END. Seriously, I don't understand how a franchise can be SO MILKED and yet it seems no one cares! In fact, I've seen countless people with Final Fantasy pictures saying that Microsoft is really milking halo. Halo has 4 games in its series, 5 soon. 5 compared to hundreds. Are you serious? Give it a rest. Let it end. And for gods sake do something new, Squeenix. Or, more importantly, make a new Chrono Trigger game.

I agree, though I wish for Crash to make a comeback.  Tony Hawk won't get interesting anytime soon, Halo has a glimmer of hope now that they moved from that god-awful engine and are utilising one to allow for better acting to be seen, not just heard, and hopefully a more grander scale of war than the "climactic" conclusion of the last one, and Metal Gear should just end as the story is nothing short of terrible, though the game itself is fun to play.  Shame that long cutscenes are riddled in MGS4, and it was a poor design choice that almost ruins the game, regardless of the subliminal reasons for why Kojima decided to make them that long.

Castlevania
Need for Speed
Sim City
Max Payne
Zelda

And I'm even starting to think Pokemon.

Definitely agree with you on Halo and Tony Hawk. Not so much on Metal Gear (they just have to go with something beyond the typical Metal Gear Solid storyline they've been following for years). No idea about Crash because the only game I've played from that series was an obscure one for the GBA, though it was, to say the least, not the best platformer I'd ever seen.

Now I want to write a list of games that should be revived. Age of Empires comes to mind, now that Ensemble is no more.

Great first post. I agree with you on Crash and Tony Hawk. I always felt that Crash had been milked to death by the end of the PS1. He really should be laid to rest. Tony Hawk got it right with Tony Hawk 2, but they just keep making more of them and after RIDE I really wish they would stop.

Metal Gear Solid I'm not sure I agree with you on. I am fine with Peace Walker as it's a prequel and we already know how it begins and ultimately ends. Rising on the other hand I'm not so sure about. If it's a Gaiden that takes place after MGS 2 and before MGS 4 and tells the story of how Raiden became the badass ninja that he is in MGS 4 then I am fine with it. However, if it's the start of a new Metal Gear franchise and takes place after MGS 4 effectively making it MGS 5 I will not be happy at all.

As far as Halo goes, I'm sort of on the fence. I do feel that Halo has failed to innovate and keep up with rest of the modern shooter scene. It's trapped in the last gen, but there is always hope that it might one day catch up with the competition. I think that 343 Industries might be the ones to do this and bring Halo up to par, but they also might not and if they don't then I completely agree that there shouldn't be any more Halo games after Reach. I do think we will see a division within the Halo community between people that are just happy to have more Halo and the purists who feel that  any Halo not made by Bungie isn't a real Halo. It'll be the same thing that happened in the Call of Duty community when Treyarch started making Call of Duty games.

You are completely right, I missed Mario, despite it definitily qualifying for this list, perhaps moreso than even Final Fantasy. Good catch

as long as good games keep getting made, there should be continuation on the franchise. New Metal Gear and Halo games are still good. Why the fuck would you want them to go away? Also they make a lot of money, and like hell are you going to tell any kind of company that they can't make money.

Final Fantasy games aren't really sequels so I don't think they deserve to be on the list.  Each game is a new world, new characters, new gameplay etc. They're actually really quite different from each other for the most part, almost like a genre of it's own. Chrono trigger got mentioned but it could have been called final fantasy and it would have been more like FFVII-IX than XIII is. On the other hand, the series is being diluted and wrecked to the point where they are not very fun to play anymore. It's far from mario/zelda where it becomes hugely repetitive and the characters weren't very interesting to begin with but there's a bit of gameplay innovation to keep people happy. Nintendo could really have made a great likeable character for the mario games, mario is a pretty horrible character imo.

I nominate tekken, on the 6th game but there's not much they can do with the series, fighting games are pretty stagnant.

Metal gear, I somewhat agree, MGS4 was the worst in the series in many ways, except for the controls which I loved. There wasnt much stealth, the story is now less exciting and original and more convoluted and crazy. I'd like to see the heart of the series continue somehow perhaps with different setting/characters, freshen it up a bit, but I really hope there's a new MGO cos that is my favourite ever multiplayer game.

@Ignor: Street Fighter? The fighting game genre has just experienced a rejuvenation delivered solely by SF4. Its accessible, though has tons of depth and is addictive as hell. Why bail on it? The franchise hasn't had a proper installment in years and when they brought it back it was fantastic.

I agree with all the rest though.

@Pinworm45: This forum SERIOUSLY needs a [sense of humour] tag. God.

Hey, you missed GTA! It's like, 11 titles in those series!

Why the fuck end franchises like Final Fantasy, Zelda or Mario when every game is completely different from the other? Because it's long? God.

No, these games do not fit what the OP tried to show. He presented three series that should end for different reasons - Tony Hawk because it's shit, Metal Gear because it's a closed history and there shouldn't be any messing with it at least for now and Halo because the original creators are saying "bye" and the next ones will probably only be cash offs.

Not directing this hatefully at the Topic creator or anyone here specifically but...
I think one of the problems with people complaining about Halo is that they don't realise that just because it says Halo doesn't mean it's going to be about the Chief or that they're spamming on the games, Halo is generally not intended to be shovelware by anyone who is involved in creating the games.
Bungie has spawned a universe with opportunities to create games about and it's only by refinement and improvement that the series gets better obviously.
And people seem to just like dumping hate on Halo, but I just think, it's Microsoft's and Xbox's big selling main series, something iconic of that platform, Sony has Metal Gear and Final Fantasy and Ratchet & Clank possibly, Nintendo has Zelda and Mario and half the planet buying the shovelware somewhere in each country.

Again, not directing this hatefully at the topic creator or anyone specific, just my 2 cents on Halo, it's a universe out there and the first major series of Xbox that is this iconic, it shouldn't  be surprising that they're going to use the brand to market more under the brand name and the thing is, while ODST and Halo 2 were debatable, it's no doubt rattled the cage for other exclusives where the competition for good multiplayer is at on other consoles.

And to the ignorant and the blind, if you don't like it, don't play it. :P

I think ultimately, people who didn't "get" the subtleties of halo MP will never get how much greater it can be, or how much can be added to enrich it.

Take ATLAS, the community maps submission thing as a nice clear example. Sandbox was released 2 years too late, but it still churned out a lot of stuff for matchmaking. Reach is certainly going to have a superior forge mode, the atlas idea will be in place from day one, instead of day 600, Shishka and other bungie employees won't be busy doing things for Reach and there will be more mapmakers. Could you imagine what will become of that? Because the people ITT saying halo has gone on for too long can't, because they don't even know what atlas is. Probably not even Sandbox.

And really, that's all there is to it.

@valleyshrew: Yeah, I have to agree here.  Final Fantasy's gameplay remains the same, but they generally bring a new and involving narrative to the table each and every time.  Regardless of the quality of that story, each one stands well on its own.

@crunchUK: I agree, many people I find are more willing to bash than open their eyes and look at the goodness of Halo. A few things will always be problems for people and not everyone will be satisfied but some people just can't look at the good side of things and yeah, the subtleties too.
It's one thing I'd like to see change in the gaming community but doesn't seem like they're gonna budge, one thing though, Halo will be Halo no matter how much they complain.

I think the real tragedy of the continuation on the Metal Gear series is that it seems we'll never get to see what Kojima would do if he tried his hand at something different.

Nice blog, it was a good read.  I agree with every franchise that you mentioned.  I loved the first two Crash Bandicoots, THUG, MGS1, and Halo 2.  I can't say as I've enjoyed any of their respective sequels.

I'd add Guitar Hero to the list.  I appreciate that they keep tweaking the formula to find out what works, but none of their tinkering has amounted to games worth playing.

Additionally, Mega Man should have been retired a long time ago.  Though the retro approach for 9 and 10 was a very smart move, Capcom is basically admitting that the series is only riding on nostalglia at this point.

Lastly, the Soul Calibur series still features great fighting, but the last two games have not been up to par.  I think Namco has lost their way with the franchise and should retire it completely before it becomes irrelevant.  Soul Calibur III's story and strategy modes were very poorly put together.  Soul Calibur IV seemed to rely on sex appeal and gimmicky cameos to sell copies.

I was going to say something about Sonic, but we all know that the hedgehog should've been put down a decade ago.

@skrutop: In case of Soulcalibur, we should then retire every fighting game series. Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Street Fighter. Everyone had a shitty part, sometimes even two. Gosh, there were FOUR games in that with two fucking spin-offs. It's a fighting game. They live on their own rules.

This topic gets more and more pointless with every post. Shameless, looking how nice was the OP.

I'll play Devil's Advocate for the common suggestions.

Final Fantasy doesn't really count considering every game is entirely self-contained. Halo haven't really had many games considering the franchise started in 2001, 5 games in 9 years? Not so bad. For the guy who said Street Fight, he's just wrong.

I think the people that talk about Halo being milked or needing to end are usually just on forums.  The game's still sell well, people still like Halo.  I admit Halo 2 and 3 didn't do much for me but that's just what my tastes were at the time.  I'm pretty interested in Reach, I have to say I like the changes.

I enjoyed the article just one question, you said "and one of the best protagonists seen in recent gaming" when referring to Halo, now i know why people like the game and i have nothing against the game personally but surely this can't be true Master Chief has the character equal to a breeze block and the emotional depth of a digestive biscuit, theres just no flavor to him. I always looked at master chief as a catalyst to tell the story of the Halo universe and not exactly the main appeal of Halo.

I suppose that one could see this a few ways.
There are those series that should end because of sales or those that should end because they suck.  Those can be correlated.  Also, a series may have just over saturated itself and become stagnant.  Here are my picks and why.

1.  Final Fantasy.  These games have not fucking changed and the characters are always so gay with the advent of 3d graphics.  Should have stopped at FFVI
2.  MGS.  MGS2 was such a failure, it ruined my expectations.  I enjoyed it but it did not have that same thrilling feel MGS had.  And then MGS3 had an old guy and a guy made of bees and a fucking ghost.  MGS4 had a monkey and diaper and Meryl falling for a guy whos only claim to fame was him taking a shit all the time.  And Otacon cries like a bitch, yet again. Shoulda stopped at MGS
3.  Tony Hawk.  These games suck now.  Shoulda stopped at THPS4

These companies still put a large amount of resources into these franchises to ensure they don't stagnate and become irrelevant over time, which is more than I can say for the Tony Hawk or Crash Bandicoot franchises. Mario Galaxy had some of the best level design I've witnessed in the genre. The main difference between these franchises and the first two mentioned in my blog, while obviously being a large source of revenue for their respective developers, still have something to offer to the gaming community.

I couldn't agree more about Metal Gear.  I absolutely love all the MGS games, but I don't want any more.  MGS4 was a perfect conclusion to the series, and anything more would only dilute it.  The problem is, Metal Gear is probably Konami's most acclaimed franchise, and they're not going to let it die peacefully.  There is a certain purity with the four games as they are, and too many side-stories and prequels would ruin that.
