This is a difficult argument to make. Books are the only medium that are pure narrative whereas games are really the only medium that can get away with absolutely no narrative and still be seen as 'good'. Also, games generally don't have very high standards when it comes to storytelling, certainly not on par with many movies/series.
I really can't see an argument as to why a book would be better off adapted into a game as opposed to, as you say, a movie or television series.
But I dunno, maybe The Three Musketeers? Only because every attempted adaption of those novels has always sucked, maybe a game could do better? (I doubt it)
I suppose there's the Witcher, although that is a non-canon continuation rather than a direct adaption. It would probably fall more under your last paragraph about game universes. Sure, it's got the same protagonist as the books, but he has amnesia, as to not leave the new audience in the dark. Now it was a damn good game, as well as its sequel, and has actually spurred me to read the books. So I guess that's one I didn't know I wanted to see adapted but now that it has been, I'm glad it did. If that makes sense?
To put it bluntly, I guess I never really married the two mediums and I kinda think for good reason.
