Anime Expo 2011- 7/2

So I randomly decided to head off to the Anime Expo in Los Angeles today. It was an okay experience. I'm not the biggest anime fan, but I do spend a lot of time with people who are obsessed with the stuff. I didn't talk to many people, but I did say hi to Gia (originally from WhikeyMedia's AnimeVice, but now works with AnimeNewsNetwork). I didn't buy anything other than food, which was already too pricey, but hey, that's conventions for you. At the end of the day, it was a...different experience, since I don't tend to go to conventions.

It's cool seeing people get creative with costumes. But while the atmosphere is interesting, the panels I attended didn't grab me, really. Aksys was showing off trailers to games I know nothing about, but it's fun watching fans flip out over these announcements. The other panel I attended was the one for AnimeNewsNetwork, who were taking questions. I also ran into Sora-thekey and Tom Pinchuk, so there's that. Anyway, I know what you're thinking - WHERE ARE THE PICTURES!? Alrighty then, here's what I took. Also expect a video up once I get the patience to edit it together. Any other questions?

Um....

I took this picture because I know EsRever would want me to.
I like watching people have fun!

Anime Expo seems pretty alright if you know exactly what's going on and what you want to get out of the convention, but anime conventions are not for me. I can't even name you any Naruto characters, let alone characters from random generic anime #452.

You should probably hit up Long Beach Comic Con sometime, seems like more your scene. It's a more relaxed atmosphere, less frantic but still filled with some neat panels, signings, booths and hot ladies in cosplay.

EDIT: What the hell's up with that bloom in those pictures, anyway?

@VinceNotVance: it sounds like you've been to one before. for whatever reason, i cannot imagine Vince at an anime contention.

@AjayRaz: I've been to SacAnime, which was super small, even compared to the other conventions I've been to. It was fun to go with my friends, look at some shit, take some pictures of people in cosplay, watch Gurren Laagan, and that's about it. Again, not really my scene. There was a year period where I went to about 5 conventions in the span of 9 months, so I've been burnt out on it.

@VinceNotVance: conventions aren't my thing, either. you probably know more about anime than i do. it seems like it'd be cool to go see some of the cosplay and people having a good time enjoying the stuff that they love.

also, @Apathylad:, were there any cosplay dudes fighting each other?

I actually think I want to go SacAnime this year. Tara Platt's gonna be there (who just seems like a sweet lady, not to mention she follows me on Twitter!) and The Slants are performing a live set (and they're pretty great, IMO). Might be worth the $25-30 admission if I go with peeps.

That sounds strangely riveting and incredible for some reason.

SHOW, prove to me there is some redemption in cosplay. Rather than something like the shitty felicia who thinks having boobs smaller than a fat guys quantifies as managing that costume.
