Little Exposure, Great Game

Back when I was deciding which game I should buy for the 3DS, it was easy to narrow it down to the following titles;

  1. Super Street Fighter IV
  2. Pilotwings Resort
  3. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars
  4. Super Monkey Ball 3D
  5. Rayman 3DS

Due to personal taste, I decided that either Rayman 3DS or Shadow Wars would be my final verdict. After a few days I came to the conclusion that Shadow Wars will my day one purchase. A month before the release of the 3DS, Ubisoft left Shadow Wars in the dark. There was little public information about the game itself. Not too long after that, Nintendo finally released a trailer of the game on the official website of Nintendo. The game looked better than I expected.

It was obvious by then that Shadow Wars would be forgotten amongst the other titles, mostly because of Ubisoft's lack of faith in the game (no trailers, nor previews). Finally, the reviews for the launch titles came out, SSFIV and Pilot Wings were the first. Followed by, almost less than a week before the launch of the 3DS, the Shadow Wars reviews emerged (among all of the other titles).

It is disappointing to see that Shadow Wars didn't get the attention it deserved, but I am proud to say that I was right in both acknowledging it was going to receive little attention, and that it is the best original game out of the launch titles. Dare I say the best of the bunch overall.

Does anyone else feel that it never got the chance it deserved?

turn-based strategy games are my favorite type of game for portable consoles. This was honestly my first choice for 3DS as well. It is a nice change of pace from Advance wars, but I felt that playing through the game that Banshee was overpowered. Once the machines started coming in, then I felt Mint and Banshee were overpowered. The story was a little bleh and it wasn't the best use of the power of the 3ds, but honestly i could care less. Overall it was a pretty fun and put less emphasis on powers during a match.
 The skirmish a multiplayer modes are fun as well. Kinda bad that it is restricted to one 3ds though.

i bought it. it's well made, but i find it boring. the characters have nothing to draw me in, and the story is quite cliche. i also feel that things like moving and attacking on the same turn are done differently from other srpgs like fire emblem, for no reason and add complication. it seems to me like this was a game made without a story or franchise, and was sold to publishers almost as a shell for a game, and once a publisher bought it, the story was added in depending on what franchise they wanted.

that's not to say the game isn't good; but is it good only in comparison to launch titles? i feel that i wouldn't give this game a second look if it weren't one.

@AquaGeneral: I didn't even bother to consider it because of the lack of coverage, and even with the quicklook, it just seemed so different from what I would expect from a Tom Clancy game. Then again I don't like franchises like Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon, so maybe that's a good thing.
