I remember it used to be very commonly $110 AUD ($85 USD with today's exchange rate) in about 2004, in Australia.

Now it usually costs $89 ($69 USD), which seems very fair, but back when the Australian Dollar was stronger than the American dollar, it was not a single bit cheaper for the Australians. Star Wars Battlefront 2 costs $79 AUD from JB-Hi-Fi, which is actually amazingly cheap for us Australians. Full price console games cost on launch date has gotten so much better.

I really have to say Red Faction Guerrilla. Sure there was destruction in some many games before it, but Guerrilla was the first (and one of the only) to take into account structural stress and to have entire buildings be able to crumble onto other buildings. Destruction simulated well on such a large scale. I really also feel that the game was just complete fun - excluding the escort and racing missions that is. I felt like most of what the game got me to do was to just have fun with the systems the game has. I can't think of many games that worked as well as this one did.

One thing I think would indeed count as "lazy" is when physics-driven rigidbody objects in games don't have any "bounciness" (or restitution). This was so frustrating in the original Crackdown, where a big ball you could move around didn't bounce at all, ever. It's driven by a physics engine where it only takes changing the restitution parameter to something greater than 0.0.

I'd say 720p @60fps is definetely "good enough". It actually requires more power to do 1080p at 30fps (~62 million pixels/second) vs 720p at 60fps (~55 million pixels/second). I think it really depends on the game for if I would prefer 1080p 30 vs 720p 60.

My current progress. I'm probably going to spend 9 days full time on this. I've never made a smaller scope game and this has me excited. It will fit the theme of Drew's "E3 Conference" idea, and partially fit Austin's "Bleak Cyberpunk Dystopias" idea (without the cyberpunk part).

It's going to be a physics based game with my own voice acting - but don't worry, it will sound slightly demonic so my performance won't be too bad.

In my experience, you should find getting a replacement to be a breeze (through warranty). In most of my setups over the last decade the GPUs have always been dying the most out of everything else. In my household we have lost a GeForce 7300 LE, a GeForce 7600 GT, a factory overclocked GeForce 8600 GTS, 2x GeForce 9800 GTX's and a GTX 460.

I know that one thing that didn't help the 8600 GTS and above graphics cards was in at least one case using a cheap power supply. The 8600 GTS had no hope however because it would reach up to 100 °C (212 °F ) while playing GTA IV on PC for example. Despite being factory overclocked the GPU didn't have ample cooling.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

I played a demo of Yakuza 4 and remembering the combat to be quite stiff and clunky - not what I had in mind. I don't remember Yakuza 5, maybe it's better.

I'll have to have a look at how Tekken's take on this plays.

@theht Imagine how much fun it would be to take the fighters from Street Fighter and team up with a friend to punch the thugs from Arkham City (for example) back and forwards, juggling them. Theoretically a single punch could launch one of the thugs back and knock over his friends.

I search Abyss Odyssey and was super suprised to see it was made by the ACE Team. I'll have to look at this and the other games mentioned.

I was thinking more of a third-person action game with the combat from a fighting game. Imagine something like the Batman Arkham series of games but with fighting-game-style combat. With the perspective change, maybe it will be harder to judge exactly what the enemies are doing since you don't have the nice 2D side view? I'm not sure if it'll be a problem or not.

I am not so interested in fighting games, but I do have some love towards beat-em-up and hack'n'slash type games. Seeing as how something like Street Fighter V has such nice animation and depth to the fighting, is it possible they could somehow make a third-person component where it's about beating up AI? I'm thinking some AI combatants would be relatively weak (but could be difficult in numbers), while some combatants would be so strong it would be best to fight them one-on-one.

It seems like there is so much potential for a game or mode like this. Somehow bringing the fighting game mechanics and depth to a beat-em-up style game to me could make for one of the best beat-em-ups ever.

I know that to some degree this is already done in games like Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry, but they are a bit removed from typical fighting game mechanics.

Would do all of you think? Am I just crazy?

I wouldn't be so inclined to use DDR4 myself since it's barely an upgrade at all for now. In some cases it performs slower than good DDR3 memory, so keeping that in mind the extra price really might not be worth it.

Hello Giant Bombers,

I'm always lurking around on Giant Bomb, and haven't posted anything in a while, so I thought I'd post the following.

I released Popple Mania on iOS a week or so ago. I spent the past 4 months making it.The aim behind the game is very (not) technical; knock as many objects onto the ground to score more.

Loading Video...

(the video is captured on a PC for this video, but it's an iOS game)

You can find Popple Mania on the App Store here (Free): https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/popple-mania/id1025417221

Let me know what you lot think!
