Trip Down Memory Lane: Gamecube

This week I had the insane idea that I wanted to replay through the catalog of Nintendo's Gamecube in chronological order until I finished every game. I believe this originally stemmed from me wanting to play Metroid Prime again, then Wind Waker, then Star Fox Adventures and eventually I decided "might as well play the whole thing." So here's a list of games, in chronological order, that I expect to replay to completion or just revisit within sometime of the next year.

List items

  • November 18th 2001 - I never played Luigi's Mansion before, I heard it was actually good but I don't recall if that's because the launch for the Gamecube was so bad or if people actually enjoyed it. Seeing as how Luigi's Mansion 2 is coming out eventually, why not revisit the first one?

  • December 2nd 2001 - I rented Pikmin when I was younger but got frustrated over the doom counter represented in the thirty day time limit you had. Any day I didn't make significant progress I thought I had already failed at the game and turned it off. However I remember enjoying it outside that frustration.

  • December 2nd 2001 - Back when Jeff was using 1.0-10 scale this was one of the few games he rated as 10/10. High praise but I have to agree. THPS3 is the quintessential skating game and I played the hell out of it when I younger. I imagine I'll just grind a few rails to the tune of 96 Quite Bitter Beings and call it a day.

  • February 2nd 2002 - Another game I owned when I was younger and played more than I probably should have. I just remember grinding for animals to upgrade my Chao, no idea why I did that. I'm also unsure if I ever actually finished the game. I think I gave up after that Knuckles/Rose level in space. Trial and error across an enormous level? Man, video games used to be DUMB.

  • April 30th 2002 - I actually tried to play REmake a few years ago but gave up after meeting my first crimson head. I imagine the same will happen this time around but its worth a shot.

  • June 24th 2002 - Another game I've never played but sounds even more interesting each time I hear stories about it. Although I think most of the surprises have been ruined for me through osmosis. Blue death screens, fake deleted saves, etc.

  • August 25th 2002 - I really didn't mind Super Mario Sunshine when it came out. It still had that Mario feel but enough of a twist to the actual gameplay that I wanted to play it till the end. In comparison, I played Super Mario Galaxy for about twenty stars before I stopped caring. Guess I'm crazy.

  • September 22nd 2002 - NOBODY BUYS ME GIFTS ANYMORE, YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH SCARABS, Trial of Fear and Blue Foxes are part of what I remember from this game. For some reason I have a feeling I might really love this game if I replay it today, whereas when it was released everyone claimed it plaigerised from other Nintendo games. I say, if you copy something great, it's still great by definition. Guess I'll find out.

  • November 10th 2002 - It's madness to think this game was released one year after the last Resident Evil game. When did game development go from every year to every generation? I never got significantly far into Zero, never made it to the mansion and just replayed the Train sequence a few dozen times. Man, young Artie was such a weirdo. JUST FINISH THE GAME MAN!

  • November 17th 2002 - Another game I never finished but have no idea why. In retrospect, it literally tells you exactly where to go the entire game, I don't get how I got lost so many times. I remember I never finished Metroid Prime because the atmosphere was so lonely and desolate I just lost hope and eventually turned the game off.

  • March 24 2003 - Games being released in March? What madness is this? This is about the time that Nintendo support for the GameCube dropped off immensely. We're at eleven games within a year and a half from release but they'll struggle to make it to 2005. As for Wind Waker, I remember it being "okay," a little too simple, but still good. Except the triforce quest. Seriously, what the FUCK.

  • February 9th 2004 - That's not a typo, apparently it was a full year between 2003-2004 before another game worth playing game out (exclusive to GameCube). I'll be honest though, I don't forsee playing this game for very long. I think I made it ten minutes in before wanting to kill myself out of bordem.

  • March 9th 2004 - I have never played the original Metal Gear Solid so I hope to at least make it this far. I believe I tried to rent this game in my youth, but those damn blockbuster discs were scratched past the point of playing. Apparently Kojima says he'd like to think this game doesn't exist, but what does that guy know?

  • August 30th 2004 - Pikmin 2 brand new currently costs $84 dollars on Amazon. I tried to buy this game years ago but saw the absurd price and said "no thank you." I'll see if I can get my hands on a used copy when I get to this point. P.S. By this point in my gaming life I had transitioned from Nintendo to Sony and stopped using my Gamecube.

  • November 4th 2004 - I remember my middle school friend Nate playing this all the time. Seemed dumb at the time. Apparently it's good?

  • November 15th 2004 - I got to the point of this game where you have to fight a boss in the darkness aura and your health is constantly drained. I think that's like two hours in? Lame. Apparently Echoes is the best one of the trilogy so I hope I can make it to that point.

  • July 7th 2005 - I've been told if I don't feel like playing this game, I can get just as much out of it by watching the cutscenes on YouTube. From what I've seen, it's pure madness.

  • October 17th 2005 - Another big sticking point in doing this list is playing my first Fire Emblem game. I've always enjoyed the concept, but have never actually played any of the games. Maybe March and Ike are in this one? Maybe I'll finally understand their significance in Super Smash Brothers.

  • April 10th 2006 - Lol remember this game? I don't actually intend to play it.

  • December 11th 2006 - Played the Wii version, stopped caring after two or three hours, maybe the GameCube version will hold my interest.
