Rocks.... on the ground

So I was out on my morning walk, I basically just walk around a nearby field; dirt field. As I was walking up, there was an African lady (in African garb) who was just kinda sitting there picking/looking at the ground.

I know this is a bad way to start off my return post , but bare with me, there's a point. As I was walking back to my condo she was STILL there (after I had walked the length of the field all the way around). I watched her for a bit before going into my complex, and she seemed to be picking something up and looking at it or searching. My guess is that she was looking for coins, but who knows? I am someone who will pick things up off the ground. Spare-change? I pocket it. Even if it's a penny. I recently will pick up cans or bottles and instead of tossing them away, I keep them (hey collect enough and you'll get something in return. The least it could do is pay for a months worth of tacos at Jack in the Box. :D), etc.

One thing seeing this lady also did was make me think... about the ground. Do you ever look at the ground? It's kind of like looking into the sky, if you pay attention, you can spot some interesting things going on. And most people pay absolutely no mind to it. None at all. So as I was walking to my condo, i did something I did on my last walk... picked up a pretty looking rock. And kept it. But this time I picked up a bunch of interesting looking rocks. And I'm going to keep them.

When I was young, I loved rocks. I'd always pick them up and keep them. Once on a family trip to the mountains (I live in the arid, dry, mountainous, deserty land of Phoenix, Arizona) I went crazy and had picked up six GIANT boulders (er, boulders to my small size anyway, but huge rocks I had to laboriously lift with two hands) and put them in the back of the truck. Of course, I did this without my parents knowing. So naturally, it turned out to be against the rules to take rocks from the mountain (bah humbug) and my parents made me put them all back. Although they let me keep ONE. So I kept this white shiny one. And it was AWESOME.

Of course, it mostly just sat there, but one reason I wanted it was cause I'd use it as an environmental object when I'd play with my G.I. Joes (Or "guys" as me and my bros. referred to them as). I also kept little rocks. Why? Cause they were the bosses, d'uh! I remember how I'd use the rocks would always reflected videogames. So around the time of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World, my guys had to jump on top of the rock's head.... it'd spin around... See? Do so enough times and they'd defeat it. But then they had to fight the fire rock! And the ice rock! And the crystal! So I actually "made use" of these rocks and they weren't "useless" to me. But I also just found rocks interesting.

So.... why would I pick up rocks right now? That's what my brothers would say to me. My answer? Why the HELL not? I'm 26 dammit I can do whatever I want. And I want these rocks!

I am actually thinking of looking into rocks and doing some research... I've always thought it would be cool to know these things. Know what kind of rocks you are looking at. Know what kind of plants you are looking at. Know what kind of birds are flying above you (I'd love to be a bird watcher, may actually do it some day). Anyway, I'm going to use the rocks to line the wall of my bathroom countertop. I think that'd actually look cool. And whenever I come across a neat looking one I'll pick it up. I might post some pics of the ones I picked up today.

Anyone else ever do this type of thing? Ever have that odd, random desire to just pick up a cool looking rock and keep it? What about actually looking into it, finding out what type of rock it is or whatnot? Or if you could care less about rocks, ever pay attention to what you are walking past? There could be a diamond in the rough you know. :)

I am actually a rock collector. I also pickup leaves, and other interesting stuff, that entices me.

I have some of the stuff at home.

About knowing more scientifically about the rocks, I don't care that much. It is their personal history that I care, and the state in which they are. They make me ponder. ^^

Everybody tends to look to the sky, but sometimes it's overrated. There's always something interesting to find on the ground, but I tend to leave it alone.

That's just rude. I would be nice and call him a fucking Christian. He knows me. Nature means more to me than anything man has ever created...including GOD.

Yes, if you don't look at the ground you're likely to fall off the pier/cliff/docks.

Plus if you get enough money & bored enough, a handful of rocks can be tossed in a rock tumbler unless you're more interested in the geology of rocks. That or just collect some good ones to toss at neighbors, wild animals, ect. to improve your aim with improvised thrown weapons.

Thanks man. That's fine if you don't have anything to add, I just appreciate the comment!

It's the same type of rock we used to play on.. and about the same size! How cool is that? Guess what? This "tub" sold for $790,000!! I'm thinkin' I need to go back and pay someone for that rock, and turn it into a tub. Hell If I can find a place for it.. I'll sit my fatass in it and wait until I retire to sell it. :p Wishful thinking of course.. but it really is the same type of rock.. i used to chip away at it with other rocks because I liked how it looked kinda like ivory and sparkled. I love rocks though, and have always collected them as we had train tracks running on the other side of where that rock is located.. so I'd walk up and down the sides of the tracks looking for cool looking ones. Bravo on continuing down the discovery path! "
:O OMG! Dude that is freakin' amazing! You better go back and get that rock!!!!!!! Very cool, thanks for the comment! Wish I had train tracks near me (actually I don't, cause of the noise, but still!) that would've been cool to walk around as a kid.

I look at the ground when I walk so I won't trip over anything and look like a buffoon.

As a kid I used to pick up stuff and keep it, but not now.  Unless it's money.  I'll pick that up! :-)

I'm a geologist. It's my job to look at the ground and it's job I enjoy.

Most people take it for granted, but there's a good deal of history out there. Even with just a few rocks you can start to see how things were in the past and it really doesn't take all that much background knowledge to get a decent grasp of the basics. The hard part is finding a decent teacher since learning rock identification from a book tends to be difficult for most people.

I've been reading this book about leafcutter ants (I got it at a local Borders going out of business sale; it's actually surprisingly academic), and it got me thinking about stuff like this.

Its sort of mind-blowing to think about the whole miniature universe insects inhabit all around us that we kind of just ignore.

She was digging for fire!

I just instantly thought of that, not sure why.

I'd like to think I'm a fairly observant person, I make a conscious attempt to try and notice the little things. I've had a few people give me a strange look when I'm staring at an object for an extended period of time.

when im sitting on the grass when i take a walk down to the beach i just take the time to look around and see whats going on.  i can sometimes see ants running around in the dirt carrying a small particle of grass or food.  i like observing the rabbits and birds as they fly around the sky.  all of it makes me feel good and i can reflect about some of the things in my life.  i remember picking up rocks on the ground when i was younger.  i also picked up small flowers that sometimes grow in grass.  even though it sounds stupid, ill do that in the morning tomorow

I have a small collection of fossils (including fossilized shark teeth) that I picked up off of a beach on the Chesapeake Bay. When we'd visit my aunt in Maryland, we'd go there at least once and look for a few.

I think it's important to slow down every once in a while to notice the rocks on the ground and the clouds in the sky and appreciate it all. When things get crazy for me it's that kind of stuff that will bring me back to sanity.

Sadly, that only lasted for about 5-10 min, then the rest of the time I spent looking at the ground and all the different rocks. I found it fascinating how many different coloured and designed rocks there are. Some were spotted. Some were blue. Some where ovals. Some were chipped and broken looking. Some shaped like arrow heads.

It was always really cool walking out after it had been raining for a few hours, because the driveway was literally covered with worms. You couldn't take a step without stepping on one it was so full of them. I always found it neat there was this whole other world under the ground full of bugs that you just never see or think about.

That's awesome man! Thanks for sharing. :) I never really saw many worms when I was a kid, only when I was really, really young do I remember digging for them. I don't know why that is though... if I would've thought about worms living under us that would've probably had an effect. I do however remember when Honey, I Shrunk the Kids first came out and that changed my whole perspective on what happens at that level! I remember it being such a huge revelation lol.

I don't pay much attention to the ground anymore sadly, when I'm on a trip or walk I always rush. ( I run alot )
It is very rare, but there has been some very nice looking rocks I've taken with me, but I don't keep them for long.

Awesome. Fascinating, eh? My dad tells stories about crawdad's. Back when Phoenix was a small town and he was the lone brown kid in the entire school, and it was farmland as far as the eye could see, dad says you'd find them everywhere. They used to catch them and eat them as well. I only vaguely ONE time remember seeing one as a kid back when our yard used to be irrigated. But of course, i've never tried looking for one. So now that it is mentioned I bet I'll see you one soon :P
