Ah! I've been away for so long. Well, from the blog. I'm hardly away from Giant Bomb ;-) I thought I'd do a big old update about things going on and hopefully some of you care.
Daily Girl Attack Panic Super HD Remix is still going strong. I've been updating it since late 2009 and I'm really happy I'm still updating it. For those who don't know it's more of a random musings about games, culture and games journalism than a blog full of reviews and previews. I'd rather get paid for that other stuff ;-)
Work life is getting a lot better. I got my Tomb Raider feature front paged on IGN, which was a real treat. You can read The Redemption of Lara Croft here. I'm also working on a few projects with them and getting my work around a bit more.
I visited their offices while I was in San Fran the other week and after a really positive meeting I hope to be doing more pieces for them soon. Excited!
I've also started to contribute to English newspaper The Sun. For you US lot, it's the biggest selling tabloid in the UK so it's kind of a huge deal for me to be writin for them. My latest piece is a round up of the Xbox Spring Showcase that took place in San Francisco a few weeks ago. You can reed it here: The calm before the 720 storm
I'm also in more talks with another publisher about freelance and I'm also doing more consultancy work. My last consultancy job was on Final Fantasy XIII-2 for Square Enix. I was the first journalist to play through and finish the whole game. That was a really cool moment for me.
So yeah, life is pretty fun at the moment. I've only got two months left of university and I'm dreading leaving. Going full time freelance is such a scary prospect and something I really don't want to do. Hopefully a staff job will turn up somewhere and I'll be reporting from a big website.
Sorry for the weird boasty post ^^ Feel free to be mean to me in the comments.
While I know that Gamespot might not be the most loved website here on Giant Bomb, they are one of the bigger gaming sites out there and getting them on your resume is a good idea. I spend 2 weeks with them for my Easter break and intend to do another 2 weeks during the summer to grab more experience.
I did two some work that got published on their website though. It's very weird adapting to their very serious and to-the-point style. Something that, as a freelancer, I'd need to get used to.
Anyway, you can check out my Hands-on preview of Splinter Cell: Conviction as well as a VO I did for a video over here.
Well, I'm going back to enjoy all these new features on Giant Bomb <3
I seem to be starting a small collection of Video Game novels/comics. I have both Gears of War novels, the first Metal Gear Solid novel, Assassin's Creed Renaissance novel and now the second Metal Gear Solid novel along with a Tomb Raider comic.
If you are wondering, the Metal Gear Solid novels are pretty damn good. So are the GoW ones. Assassins' Creed Renaissance was done in such a weird way I cannot begin to enjoy it. It is written just like you are playing the game, which can get very boring. I got it because I thought I would learn something new :( Shame.
Why yes Giant Bomb, I have been playing video games. With the steam sale being EPIC, a lot of PC gaming has been going on. I mean, I used to have about 6 steam games linked to my account, but now I have all of these badboys!
Holy crap! I've spend the last 7 hours preparing for my presentation on Mirror's Edge for my Games Studies class. I've written just under 2000 words of notes for my 10 min presentation that I am now guessing I am going to over run. I was worried I wouldn't last 5 mins! All I can say is I am very happy with how the slides have turned out.
I kind of wanted to post them to give people an idea of what we do in a Games Studies degree. Of course, that looks easy but my notes I talk about the paidea, ludus, agon, ilea, ilinx and mimesis elements of the game and I am sure 90% of you do not know that these terms even mean. Don't worry, neither do I! I have to pretend I do however....
On a side note, it has only made me want to replay Mirror's Edge! If I didn't have enough games on my plate already....
