Top Ten Favorite Games

These are in no particular order as it is difficult for me to rank them because many of them are from different genres.

List items

  • This is the game that introduced me to my favorite genre, the RPG. Even after playing all of the main titles in the series (minus FFXI) the story and gameplay still stand above the rest. The materia system allowed you to customize your characters, effectively replacing the job based system and role based characters from the previous installments. The playable characters were flushed out very well with interesting personalities and stories of their own. Though by today's standards the animation is less than quality, this game still holds its own through magnificent storytelling and incredible gameplay experience.

  • Another personal RPG favorite. The story was great as well as an abundance of characters and skills that could be utilized throughout the game. The only real issue I had with this game was the fact that it did not have the depth of a combo system that was so well loved in Chrono Trigger. Though not as well received as it's predecessor, I felt that this game built on an already immense mythology and wove a great story about the consequences of saving the world.

  • There isn't much to say about this game that everyone doesn't know. This game helped to redefine console shooters. The first competitive shooter that I played with friends. I can't count the number of times that I completely finished a save file, acquiring all the cheat codes and finishing every mission on 00 agent.

  • Another 64 masterpiece that I invested probably a few hundred hours into (and that is closer to true than you might believe). I spent alot of time figuring out exactly when and where to shoot in order to get the highest score possible in each run.

  • The first truly competitive online shooter that I played. My friends and I had the PC version of this and played online almost everyday for about a year. A great variety of maps and great gameplay. Truly a standout in a vast ocean of shooters.

  • Took the war shooter genre from the much played out World War II era, into the fresh "modernized" world. Offering a vast array of today's standard military weapons, current familiar political themes, a great story in which I actually felt the final enemy warranted being shot in the head, Modern Warfare changed the face of this genre. It has been emulated many times with VERY few successes, and still stands high above its competing titles.

  • This is actually a toss up for me between X3 and X4. While X4 was the first game to feature the fully playable Zero (which is one of my favorite characters in any game), X3 was just a better Mega Man game overall. X3 took the enhancement system introduced in the series to the next level allowing the player to upgrade X further than ever before. Playing through the game in a certain way allowed X to take command of Zero's Z-Saber towards the end of the game, amplifying his power even more. The enemies were a great challenge and the Ride Armor vehicles were amazing. Overall the best of the X series and one of the top in Mega Man history.

  • The greatest fighter I have ever played. Again this was a game that I'm sure had some hinderance on my college career. Awesome line up of characters, amazing single and multiplayer gameplay and a fun factor that is through the roof, brings this game to the forefront of fighters.

As a side note, the gameplay of Brawl felt significantly slowed and some of the more advanced tricks and tactics were removed in what I felt was an attempt to make the game "easier" and more accessible to lower level players. Way to go Nintendo.

  • While Mario Kart 64 is considered better by many, I felt that DKR had many advantages that Mario Kart couldn't compare with. Yes you had similar items in which to wreak havoc on the track such as homing missiles and oil slicks. However, Diddy Kong Racing had much more. A variety of game modes including standard racing, battle modes, and even a few collection modes were all contained in this great game. Unlockable characters and tracks were also a plus. The bosses challenges were alot of fun and even though the courses had to be repeated in order to finish a world, the coin challenge provided a different experience in to keep things fresh.

  • I'm sure that many people feel that this is the greatest Zelda game of all time. To be honest there are too many of these games that are good to pick a favorite for me. Link to the Past, Ocarina of time, Twilight Princess, and even Link's Awakening are all games that I have deeply enjoyed over the years. The only advantage that I give to OoT is that the gameplay was innovative for the series and the level design was great. Overall the best in a series that never fails to deliver.

Your list  represents several of the games from my childhood that I get warm and tingly about.  Its interesting to see diddy kong and mega man on the list but they add welcome variety to a top ten that I might not have expected.
