I wish there are more cute games coming out.

I feel like I'm tired of most of the games that have come out recently. There are so many games featuring serious looking dudes with serious sounding stories, cool spaceships/robot future/magic, or even downright depressing shit! Even games centered around cute cartoonish animals get super dark.

Yes, please.
Yes, please.

Well, a lot of those games are good, but I would like more sweet games to be made! I'm talking about games like Pikmin, Patapon, Kirby and Little Big Planet. Even simpler games like LocoRoco and Animal Crossing would be fine. Games that are fun and saccharine! I think these games were able to deliver cuteness without needing to compromise their gameplay and story, and there's something about cute things that I just enjoy. When Overlord took some of the ideas from Pikmin and brought it into a "dark and gritty" fantasy parody-ish setting, I felt like something was lost in the transition.

Look at Giant Bomb's top 10 games of 2012 list. the only game on it that can be called cute is Fez. Hell, look at the first page of the reviewed games list. As of right now, the only ones out of the list that I would consider cute are Theatrhythm, Adventure Time, and maybe Mario and Nintendo Land. Maybe the reason I like cute games more is that there's not as many? Maybe I would like cute games less if they start to become the norm.

I don't know if that is the case, but now might be an opportunity to make cuter games. They shouldn't be too hard to market, right? I mean, Nintendogs and Wii Sports (I guess it's somewhat cute?) did pretty well even to people who don't usually play games, didn't they? I know someone who loves Pikmin just because it is cute, and is amazing at it even though she never plays anything harder than Bejeweled.

I know that there are new Pikmin, Animal Crossing, and Media Molecule games coming out, but they are sequels so not exactly something new...

Is this just wishful thinking, or is there a place for more cute games in the current market? I sure hope it's the latter...

@TruthTellah:

Maybe somebody will crack the Wii U and figure out how to save them somewhere else (maybe trick the system into thinking that your SD card is the Miiverse or something).

Wait, the Wii U allows you to take screenshots? Can said screenshots be uploaded to the Internets for everybody to see?

The Wii U allows you to take screenshots, but they can only be posted to Miiverse.

Though, perhaps that's changing. I haven't heard anything like that.

I wasn't there for Nintendo Direct. I learned about the new Fire Emblem crossover via an @reply.

I...don't know. I was only half paying attention for most of that Nintendo Direct.

Nothing wrong with cute. The new Yoshi game should be pretty sweet. I feel a lot of Indie Games coming out can fall under cute. Maybe you should check out more of those.

You ever play Atelier Totori OP? Its pretty cute. Has a very lighthearted story and generally slow atmosphere, but it makes up for that with its characters and gameplay mechanics, especially the deep crafting system. If you play on PC, there's Reccetear, another light-hearted game where you run an RPG equipment shop.

Being able to take screenshots from the perspective of the pikmin as stated in the Nintendo Direct instantly turns that game from "cute" to "fucking horrifying"

@audioBusting: Pikmin has a cute aesthetic but the game is pretty brutal in the way it treats those cute little creatures. You're sacrificing them by the hundreds to get Olimar (sp) off that planet. The second game is even more hellaciously violent in terms of the Pikmin slaughter.

Yeah it's brutal but even the way they die is so damn cute.

Also after Nintendo Direct I think I need to get a Wii U. It's like all they make are rehashes of old cute games but dammit I need them in my life.

I'm convinced that Nintendo hired a bunch of women from etsy when coming up with the art style for Kirby Epic Yard and Paper Mario Sticker Star.

@audioBusting: I'm not sure it gets more cute than Yoshi's Epic Yarn.

I'll give you that these games may have fantastic gameplay. But in the story department I don't think there were too much to even sacrifice. I could be wrong, I haven't played some of them. The problem for me is that game developers doesn't seem to blend cuteness with a deeper narrative that well. It can be done, look at Pixar for example.

Now, am I bummed out that the only alternative for me are those dark dudebro attitude teenage power fantasies... yes I am.

Agreed, Ni No Kuni's the only big story game comes to mind but I haven't played that yet. It would be cool if someone makes a game like Pixar or Disney movies. A game I forgot to mention is The Banner Saga, which claims to make a game with Disney-like animation quality but then it's a game about vikings and such =\

@BeachThunder: Yeah, to be honest I can't really play Bejeweled either. But I mean that Bejeweled's not that difficult to get into, I can suck and still play the game. On the other hand, I can't stand having like 30 pikmins die in one second all the time because I suck at it.

how about nino kuni

or are you talking about nintendo games only...

also i dont think a game can be rated for its cuteness. if a games defining quality is its cuteness then i think there is something horribly wrong.. i think we should be asking why people like nintendo arent making any thing NEW? these people rehash the same ideas again and again because people like you dig into it because there are some bobbly anime eyes and bright colors on the cover.. i think we should be demanding new interesting unique experiences, we cant let the games industry become stale. we cant stifle art by buying into the same old crap over and over again until its beaten to death, and simply gets by because it has a familiar name and a cute recognizable character.

the gaming industry is being destroyed in the same way the music industry was. people are going to small indie games, soon theyre going to be the only part of video games that can be truly called 'art'.. we arent going to have the amazing new big games any more. other than from people like valve. . come on people occupy nintendo occupy activision occupy EA. lets DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS
