Romancecast #2

No Caption Provided

Guys, it seems like you totally liked the first Romancecast! So Sara and I did another one! Thanks for enjoying our dumbass conversations~!

Download (MP3)

Talking points this time around include nudity in movies, Facebook, peaches, Portugese, outdoor music festivals, hardcore rap, bearded dragons and (believe it or not) other things too. COMMENCE TO LISTENIN'!

Oh, also: we now have a theme song courtesy of user Tebbit. It IN NO WAY resembles the George Michael classic "Careless Whisper," so take your cynical accusations elsewhere, jerk!

(Also: don't be misled by the thumbnail. Kessler contributed nothing to this episode other than his beautiful, beautiful mug for the album art.)

Seems like I'm super late, but I like the Romancecast so far. Finished episode 1 and 2 last night. Very interested in the hardcore rap thing, I listen to a lot of different styles of hip hop, but I can't listen to anything that's on the radio. I don't mean to be a snob, I just don't like the style. Lots of the hip hop on the radio has more of a pop influence now. I like to listen to hip hop that's mostly boom-bap, samples, with very technical delivery rather than synths, bass stabs, with weak lyrics. By weak, I don't mean "They need to talk about someone getting raped!", but rather that it's very simple in my eyes. The new fad where dude says a description and then says what he's describing is terrible and many songs now have some parts where the verse only rhymes because they end with the same word at the end.

I love the fast talking, battle rap stuff (similar to 8 Mile but probably harder) just because I like to hear people spit a bunch of "multis" rapid-fire alongside a hard pumping beat. Wikipedia tells me the proper English term for this is "feminine rhyme" which is ironic because what they're really used for in rap is dick swinging. lol. I mean, it's all braggadocio, but I like the package it's in. I can listen to party rap stuff too, but it still has to be at a certain level of quality and complexity. And it needs to be something I can kind of relate to. I can relate to both Immortal Technique and other "harder" rappers talk about being at the bottom and also relate to the happy and carefree attitude of People Under the Stairs. I remember my family living in an apartment that was too small alongside two extra people and I can relate to having a house with a yard (because I have one now and I understand why mowing kind of sucks). But that's because my family has gone up from the middle lower-class to the now upper middle-class part of society.

So maybe I'm an outlier. It's all good stuff though. I'm a hip hop head through and through. I just prefer the technical stuff (hard or not) to the pop stuff. I think it's somewhat similar to the whole "casual v. hardcore" thing in video games now. Lots of people just shit on the people playing Facebook games. I don't think they're bad people, they just like what they like. I however prefer to play the, for lack of a better word, "deeper" games. Of all types. I like Gears of War and I like Persona just like I like Jedi Mind Tricks and Aesop Rock. But if you want to play Lego Batman (Soulja Boy), I won't call you out on it.

Wait, he really gave out his credit card number? The house address i can understand, but i doubt he would be dumb enough to say his credit card number on a livestream.

Oh, and i'm sure it wouldn't be all that hard to find Jeff's or Ryan's home addresses, seeing how they used to regularly stream full videos of their commute right up to the moment where Jeff unlocks his front door. It's weird.

I bet Sara would love The Girl with the Dragon tattoo. Too bad sex in movies/tv puts off her so much because Game of Thrones is a damn fine TV series. Wow she doesn't like music festivals either, I went to the music Festival Oxegen in Ireland and the atmosphere was unreal everybody was unbelievably friendly; best four days ever. The Foo Fighters played pretty much all their songs late into the night. For the toilet situations you could pay at Oxygen to use the "Fancy Crapper" or shell out extra money to be in the expensive area where they pretty much had houses.

I just hate fun.

Much like Facebook, I've wasted too much time on Giant Bomb. Did I just waste the last 40 minutes of my life? Of course not, that's silly. Let me clean my keys, I watched porn while I was listening.

Gross or erotic I can't decide!

You're right! Which is why nobody said Kanye and (contemporary) Jay-Z are hardcore hip-hop!

I'm surprised to hear that Snoop Dogg is considered hardcore, though. Maybe my perspective is skewed from being born in the 90's, but (sparing the occasional gun reference) songs like "Nothin But A G Thang" and "Gin and Juice" feel like proto-mainstream party hip-hop to me.

Snoop got his start rapping with Dre on The Chronic, which is most definitely a hardcore rap album. The first single Snoop was on was Deep Cover (as mentioned), which was about killing cops. A murder or attempted murder charge in the early 90s is actually part of what helped make him famous (he was found innocent).

Snoop evolved with the times to stay relevant once OG 90s hardcore rap started falling out of popularity, but he still did a few songs sprinkled here and there.

Sara is like half of everyone I know that think that it's cool to only listen to Ghostface caliber rappers.

She's wrong. Totally enjoy the show, though. There's a churrascaria near me. Despite it being in a mall, it's one of the best places I've ever eaten at. Also craaaazy expensive.

@Cheesebob: i guess i have the mindset that the G-Funk genre wasnt too hardcore but thats just my opinion.  Biggie has the potential to be hardcore too.  i mean his diss song to 2Pac was probably more aggressive than Hit Em Up by 2Pac.  Pac talked about fucking BIG's wife, while BIG talked about murdering Pac and the this song was released on Life After Death.

Love the theme song btw

This was part of a "noir" photo session with my friend who happens to be a photographer -- did this to help him build his portfolio. Also, I'm not smoking in this photo and I do not smoke. Have you seen my pearly whites?

@Cheesebob: i dont think Snoop and Dre should be considered hardcore rap but thats just my opinion.  i only like their music from the 90s and i still dont consider their style as "hardcore."  well Natural Born Killaz with Dre and Ice Cube is pretty hardcore but im talking in a general sense.  i love the Wu Tang so ill agree with you there.  i havent listened to a lot of music by Jay Z so i cant really say anything about that...

Well, old Jay-Z. One listen through The Blueprint III and he's going hard for pop-rap in comparison to most of his stuff. It's not as bad as, say, Eminem on Recovery, but it's pretty heavily pop-fare. That's not just counting the singles, either. I respect hardcore, but I'm personally just not knowledgable enough about it to make a real judgment on the stuff.
